| WHAT STUDENTS LIKED | STUDENT PERSPECTIVE: OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPROVEMENT
| Interest/Engagement | Meaningful Learning
| Every student can learn how they want, so they are never bored | We should do something more for a political cause like how we can change the future or our school
| It wasn't super boring and basic becasue I got to choose what I wanted to learn about | Increased Structure/Teacher Support
| I learned as much as I could without being bored | Need more structure from the teacher
| If i get to choose what to study, then I'm more likely to want to do that work. | I needed more examples and guidelines like due dates and how to create a portfolio
| I like that we were able to select the projects compared to teachers just handing out projects they came up with. | I wish we had more guidelines of what we needed to accomplish before we got started
| I started looking forward to each English class because it was a chance to really see the hobby I had loved for so long for what it really was | If the teacher could teach us stuff before, then we could apply it to our projects a bit more
| It helped me maintain a positive attitude | I didn't understand what was asked of us completely
| It was fun and intriguing | It was harder to grasp information without a teacher there with me
| I was able to foucs on my own passion, what I, specifically me, wanted to learn, wanted to see, wanted to read about, and all at my own pace. | I would like a more structured assignment
| I would feel more comfortable if the teacher was more involved
| We got to find something we were genuinely interested in and talk intelligently about it | If we had a rubric, I would have came in the presentation a little more confident
| I loved being abel to decide what I wanted to do and having fun with it | I would prefer meeting with the teacher every Monday instead of doing weekly objectives
| I got to express my feelings and who I am | Let us pick our own topic, but give us general things to do so we don't just go on Buzzfeed
| It's better than reading a stupid story that nobody wants to read and write 500 word essays | Next time, students should log in what they do every week just so they keep track of what they finished and still need to work on, creating a less amount of bewilderment
| It helped me maintain a positive attitude | Time/Behavior Management
| I got to choose what I wanted to learn about, how I was going to show it, and what I was going to talk about | I could have managed my time better
| Choosing what we want to do and learn more about is pretty great, and it makes the kids feel like they have control over what they are learning and want to learn. Students tend not to pay attention when they are doing something they do not enjoy, so this was a good idea. If they are paying attention and are engaged in what they are doing, they will learn more. | A lot of people goofed around more than usual
| I feel like I learned way more than I would have learned with just a regular lesson taught by the teacher, just because I got to choose something that I genuinely wanted to learn more about and learn how to do and if it would've been chosen by the teacher, chance are I wouldn't really be interested in learning about it and after learning about whatever it may be, I would probably forget about it in the next week or so just because I wasn't interested in it to begin with | I'm not responsible enough to handle my own learning because I want to slack off
| New Learning | I needed shorter deadlnes so I could complete my work instead of waiting until the last minute
| I got to dig deeper | I needed to manage my time more
| It gives us a chance to understand what we are learning in a way we can understand | With all honesty, I played around quite a bit, so we'll definitely fix that next time
| I got to learn stuff I didn't already know | Our phones distracted us a lot
| I had more freedom and learned more than just things I already knew | I could have been more efficient
| This helped my reflection, writing, and even problem solving skills | Other people were distracting us and trying to annoy us
| I learned a lot of things I didn't know before | I got bored or distracted too much to get any work done and did the bare minimum
| One challenge I faced was focusing- time flew by faster than I thought
| It's amazing what's out there if you just look around a bit. You can learn so much about so many things, and it is all at our fingertips, just waiting to be read, or watched, or listened to, to fill our heads with knowledge | I could've done more productive things to do with my time
| It was wonderful because it shows students that no matter what they might think or say, there's something out there for them to discover, and that everyone loves to learn. | I would not goof around a lot. Maybe every once in a while but not everyday.
| I found out new things becasue of my project | It was hard to stay motivated
| Authentic Learning | Kids have never been trusted for something like this before, so they feel like they can do whatever they feel like doing. A large majority of kids take advantage of this "no due date" and mess around
| I felt accomplished | Resources
| It teaches us how to work without someone else | I had a hard time getting enough words and facts
| I love making my own work. It's like being the boss of yourself. I can work on anything that I can put my mind to. It's more fun because you have the freedom to do anything you want to (that's approved) | I had limited resources
| I took a different approach on how I wanted to succeed | It was hard to find free on-line resouces
| I learned how to take control and responsibility for my own actions and classwork | Opportunities for Collaboration
| This process greater fit my educational goal than the "old school" way would have. I improved on things that I knew that I needed to do and things that I found to be important to my life. Things that the educational system wants me to learn will not always help with what I want to do with my life. | More people could do the same stuff so it could be a group project so we could create something together
| Taking control over your education is difficult and requires an immense amount of responsibility and focus | We should have small group swho are interested in the same topic so we could bounce ideas off of each other and look at the topic in a broader manner and think of things they didn't even think aout when they first researched their topic.
| I spent lots of time thinking | Working Outside of Comfort Zone
| It provided me with things that would most likely not be touched on in school. I am able to learn things that I would usually not be able to and have a choice in what way my life will be. | We don't like to work when an adult or some sort of teacher doesn't give us an assignment
| I gave my best and the best came out to get me a good grade | Some of the feedback hurt my feelings because I was trying my best
| I learned a lot about time management
| Now that I know how to do this type of learning, it wouldn't be as challenging next time | I only stayed in my comfot zone, so I didn't learn much. If i did it again, I would do something that is harder so I could learn from it
| It taught me responsibility- it not only affected our grade for English but also for other classes. I had to make sure I was keeping up with my other classes and finishing all my assignments. | Sometimes it was frustrating
| Just like in business, there were ups and downs and owning a business can be a lot of work | It was stressful because i had no clue where to start or what to do after that
| We learned how to manage our time | I work better if i am given an assignment to complete. It's a lot easier for me and I don't feel the stress of finding something that I can talk about and not get bored really fast with.
| Collaboration/Team Work | It was hard to relate what I was learning to English
| PL is a good term for this because that is really what it is. Some people might have the misconception that personalized learning means going all tech and screens, and kids off in their own little antisocial bubble. I'd say only about 50% was spent on a sreen, and it certainly wasn't antisocial | Some of my challenges relates to my OCD nad my "follow the rules" problem. I would start freaking out because I did not have a clue what to do next and this is due to the fact that I am used to receiving instructions from my teachers.
| I eventually figured out how to do it with the help of my friends | I was stressed, annoyed, and confused a lot
| I liked seeing what the other kids chose to work on. | It was hard to figure out my next step. Having a lesson already planned out by your teacher is way easier than planning out the lesson yourself and doing the actual work
| Pacing | I would rather have someone give me work and tell me what to do rather than have myself choose. I know that sounds bad especially if I want to be a manager or CEO of my own company one day.
| Kids can learn about a skill that they are interested in and kids learn what it feel slike to be working for themselves at their own pace rather than rush or panic in their work and mess up | Interests
| If I don't understand the material, it will take me more time to do it and actually understnad what i'm doing, but with personalized learning, i didn't have to worry about being confused or being rushed. | I got bored with my subject
| I got to learn things I wouldn't have been taught properly because sometimes teachers only teach you something for a week and then move on | It was hard to find a topic that I was actually interested in and stick with it
| I didn't have any problems getting to work or finding things to do when I was doing this project | I want to have more time to really think about what I want to learn about before I start saying what I want to do
| We went into this very fast. I wish we had more time to explore our interests.
| It was hard to narrow down my ideas
