MSD in Key Donor & Global Initiatives Fireside ChatPrivate Sector Dialogues: Innovations & Systems ChangeAdaptive Management: Practical Adaptations & Innovations
7
This interview will engage various donors and organizations that are leading efforts to improve the application of systems-thinking approaches. The interviews will include how systems thinking approaches are helping make sense of a rapidly changing world. The interviews will engage private sector actors around innovations that are catalyzing systemic change in their market systems, including how they prioritize and manage their financial services, supply chains and retail distribution networks. The interviews will focus on the importance of alliance building as an effective way to compete.Systems thinking approaches are grounded in the principle that complexity requires projects to adapt to the signals and dynamics of the local system. At the same time, donor requirements and political economies can limit how projects adapt. The interview will explore how donors and practitioners are managing the often contradictory incentives.

Global Communities of Practice - Learning Agendas & UpdatesPrivate Sector Dialogues: Resilience InvestmentsImpact Leverage through MSD Collaboration: Global Case Studies
11
One of the more effective platforms for sharing learning and experiences has been the community of practice. Of particular importance for systems thinking approaches, communities of practices can bring together practitioners and donors to share experiences and lessons in how best to navigate often contradictory and difficult contexts. The interview will catch up with various communities of practice to learn what they have been up to over the last year and their focus on the year ahead. These interviews will engage private sector actors around concerns and considerations related to resilience. There has been an increased set of investments and efforts to improve collaboration. Collaboration remains difficult as traditional project based accountability measures provide substantial disincentives to effectively collaborate. The interview will dig into how practitioners and donors are managing the disincentives and fostering more effective collaborations.

10:30am - 12:30pm (option 2)Innovations in Business Circularity Models across MSD (Option 2)Summit: Blue Economy & MSD (Option 2)Summit: Urban Landscapes Under Increasing Pressures (Option 2)
26
Circular business models are increasingly the focus for large and small-scale private sector globally. What do we need to know as MSD practitioners? Explore the nuanced concept of circularity from a systems-thinking perspective. This summit delves into the importance of scale and resilience in circular business models, addressing the inherent fragility and interconnectedness at micro levels and the efficiency and interconnectedness at macro levels. This summit highlights the critical role of the blue economy in food security, climate change, and systemic resilience. Participants will share insights on ocean pollution, changing weather patterns, and other dynamic factors affecting oceans, seas, and lakes. The summit will provide insights into current efforts, gaps, and priorities for research and action in the blue economy.Climate change, increasing reliance on urban migration for household resilience, increasing informality, inadequate housing, poor quality of/limited access to utilities, etc. are all putting pressures on urban landscapes. At the same time, urban landscapes are becoming increasingly more central to the systemic resilience of many countries. While urban landscapes have been less of a focus of donors, the current realities suggest that more attention needs to be given to the challenges facing urban populations. The summit will dig into the realities, pressures and trends affecting urban spaces, including lessons and experiences from various practitioners working on urban projects.

33
Explore the importance of social inclusion in market systems resilience and competitiveness. This summit will share lessons from efforts to improve social inclusion across various social divisions and leverage the natural bridging capacity of market systems. Participants will identify priorities for learning and action to enhance social inclusion in market systems.Climate change is disrupting weather patterns in many parts of the world. While a difficult challenge for agriculture in general, for smallholders the changing weather patterns are deeply problematic. Many smallholders have evolved sophisticated coping strategies that were based on known weather patterns. As the patterns have changed, many of the smallholder communities have been struggling to adapt and the political and market systems are now organized to support the required adaptations. At the center of this challenge will be how some smallholders commercialize, while others shift to non-farming ways of generating a living. The summit will focus on lessons and experiences of practitioners active in engaging smallholder farming communities, market systems, and political systems to manage this systemic transition. This summit tackles the challenges of measuring systemic change within the tension between donor accountability and systems-thinking approaches. Participants will discuss lessons from managing this tension, insights from systemic change metrics, and emerging applications of MSR lenses. Recommendations for research and action priorities will be provided.

Shark-Tank' Circularity Business Challenge - Finalists Pitch Session Summit: Employment & Labour Markets - A Systemic Change Perspective (Option 4)Burning Issues & Blind Spots (Choose 2: TBD during MSS2024)
41
Imagine a Shark Tank-style event where innovative businesses are vying for the chance to revolutionize industries like plastics, textiles, and waste management. At the Vikāra Institute and V&A Waterfront's Circular Business Challenge pitch session, you'll witness the top three finalists from over 50 applicants present their groundbreaking ideas. These small businesses have developed innovative technologies or business strategies that promote circularity, aiming to reduce waste and create sustainable solutions. Our expert judges will grill the finalists, questioning their business models, sustainability practices, and potential impact. The most promising ventures will be awarded business acceleration opportunities and a cash prize, providing them with the resources to scale their circular solutions and make a lasting difference. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to see the future of sustainable systems in action! In this summit, the focus of the discussion will be on the dynamics of labor markets. While historically development efforts to improve labor primarily target TVETs or public job training facilities, the application of systems thinking lenses have highlighted the need to also focus on the wider forces and factors that combine to limit or bias how human capital is used to generate value addition via market systems. For example, divisions between various groups based on ethnicity, religion, social hierarchy, gender, age, etc. can foster a level of distrust and stereotypes that drives hiring decisions based not on merit, but on other factors like loyalty, group identity, and other social norms. The session will into the various experiences and lessons from applying systems thinking lenses that are uncovering the complexities of labor markets.Maybe one of the more important sessions in this year’s MSS24 is the Burning Issues and Blind Spots session. This session will pull from various other sessions to identify current and emerging issues that participants perceive as important and needing to be raised and discussed. In previous years, issues related to stove piping, lack of systemic-thinking around certain topics, the disconnect between humanitarian and MSD efforts, and emerging importance of systemic resilience have all been highlighted. The complexity of international development means that it is essential to constantly review and reflect on emerging issues, concerns and considerations that are essential if we are to learn and improve.

Modernizing Livestock Systems & Climate Considerations (option)Debate: Localization - Window dressing or real change?
97
World Vision, Somalia - Abdirahman Dubad, Livestock, NRM and IBLI Technical AdvisorOver the years donors have explored the idea of locally lead development, but these efforts have typically led to a focus on how local organizations can win grants and contracts. The end result is often donors co opting local organizations to align with their interests and agendas. In systems thinking, a foundational principle is that systemic change has to emerge and be sustained from within a system. As a result, the newest effort to localize development, if aligned with good systems thinking, localization could be an important shift in how development operates. It could also end up similar to the last efforts distorting local signals and encouraging local organizations to become dependent on donor funds. Join the debate!
