A note about how we decided which movies fall into each category: While some movies like The Village or Shutter Island have twists that change the villain, we decided to focus on 1) what the movie is marketed as and 2) where most of the scares come from. So, while the villain in The Village is ultimately the elders of the town (cult), the villains for most of the movie are monsters. Therefore, for our purposes, The Village is a monster movie where the monsters are people all along, but it’s still a monster movie.
