According to F.S.1006.28, “Each book made available to students through a school district library media center, classroom library, or included in a recommended or assigned school or grade-level reading list must be selected by a school district employee who holds a valid educational media specialist certificate, regardless of whether the book is purchased, donated, or otherwise made available to students." Prior to adding material to a teacher’s non-adopted reading list or classroom library, the material is required to be reviewed and approved by a school librarian, media specialist, or other certificated personnel who have successfully completed the training program developed by the Florida Department of Education.
When developing a classroom library or reading list, teachers are to refer to the Charlotte County Public Schools Approved Non-Adopted Classroom Library & Reading List and choose titles from the appropriate grade-level band. If a book is not included on the approved list, it is the responsibility of the teacher to submit a request to the media specialist for review & selection of the material. Please refer to the Request for Media Specialist Review & Selection of Non-Adopted Materials (Reading Lists & Classroom Libraries) form for further directions.

Note: Titles highlighted in light green have been re-vetted or newly approved by media specialists after July 1, 2023 to reflect updated statutes and State Board of Education Rules. THIS IS AN ONGOING PROCESS. PLEASE CHECK BACK FOR UPDATES.

Note: Approved lists are under constant revision based on guidance from the school board attorney as well as updates in statutes and state board rules. Individual titles may be added or removed from the list frequently. This is an evolving document that should be checked frequently for updates.

When choosing material from the Charlotte County Public Schools Approved Non-Adopted Reading List, teachers are to consider the following:
• Teachers should read the book in its entirety before making the book available to students.
• Teachers are to determine the appropriateness of the book for the students enrolled in the course they teach. According to the state mandated “Library Media and Instructional Materials” training (slide 11), considerations should include:
o Student ability to comprehend material
o The degree to which the material will be explained/supplemented by classroom instruction
o The educational purpose of the material
o The accurate portrayal of the state’s broad racial, ethic, socioeconomic and cultural diversity, without bias or indoctrination
o Age and grade level of students
o Maturity of students
o Err on the side of caution
