| Categories | |||||||||
| All the categories (except Assignment Ada) are divided into 2 types: Single Segment and Segmented. Single Segment is done in one sitting with no exiting to the main menu, you're allowed to save the game (even though it loses time and there's no reason to save), but you can't load any save. Segmented is done by doing one chapter at a time and/or, saving, quitting, and replaying said chapter until it is perfect over an extended period of time until you beat the game. On top of the type, New Game, New Game+ and No Merchant are also split into 4 difficulties: Pro, Normal, Easy and Amateur (only available in the NTSC-J versions of the game except GameCube). All categories are timed IGT (except Assignment Ada where it's timed RTA), Steam also has the LRT as an additional time even though the main timer on this sheet is IGT (to make it more consistent and easier to compare due to all the different LRTs we've had or olders runs that didn't have the LRT at all). Because of how different Steam is compared to the other platforms, there is a separate Steam tab that contains all the Steam runs. The Misc. runs such as glitchless, knife only, one weapon only, etc. are included into the main categories, they don't have their own category as there are not a lot of runs like these.
| New Game | It means beating the Leon campaign starting from the main menu. Special 2 costume is not allowed on any version. Special 1 is not allowed on GC NTSC as it gives Leon 30% damage reduction.
| New Game+ | It means beating the Leon campaign by loading a "New Round" save from a previous playthrough from the typewriter. Because of this, you can set up your starting inventory with any items you want, including the unlockables (PRL, Infinite Rocket, etc). Special 2 is used as it makes Ashley invincible.
| Separate Ways | It means beating the main Ada campaign starting from the Separate Ways main menu. Does not exist in the GC and GC USB versions.
| Separate Ways+ | It means beating the main Ada campaign by loading a "New Round" save from a previous playthrough from the typewriter. Just like on New Game+, you can set up your inventory however you want.
| Assignment Ada | It means beating the secondary Ada campaign starting from the AA main menu.
| No Merchant | It means beating the Leon campaign starting from the main menu and not talking to the merchant. Special 2 costume is not allowed on any version. Special 1 is not allowed on GC NTSC as it gives Leon 30% damage reduction.
| Save & Quit | Obsolete category for Steam that was using both 60 and 30 fps. The runner would start the game (NG, NG+ or No Merchant) at 60fps and he would switch to 30fps by saving the game and going back to the main menu to change the frame rate and reloading the save for Salazar Skip and Island skip (back when Island skip was not possible on 60) and then switch back to 60 fps (the runner could also switch to 30 for Waterfall skip). Because of going back to the main menu, this category was timed RTA (otherwise the runner could just reload the save if he missed Salazar skip for example). Note that this category is Single Segment only, the Segmented runs that use both 60 and 30fps are not Save & Quit, these are just normal Segmented runs that used both frame rates (because it's faster to do so).
| The Mercenaries | Separated into 4 maps (Village, Castle, Base and Island) and 5 characters (Leon, Ada, HUNK, Krauser and Wesker). There are 3 different sub-categories: GC NTSC, PS2/PC '07 and the Others (all the other platforms), you can find more information by going to the Mercs tab if you want to see the differences between the 3 versions at the top of tab.
| Versions | |||||||||
| A version is the officially released version such as PS4, but inside a version there can be multiple platforms for example PS5, PS4 Pro or PS4 Slim/Fat. There are 11 officially released versions of the game (14 if you include USB versions and even 16 if you include the Zeebo/Android and iPad versions that are not on this leaderboard): Steam, X1, PS4, Switch, X360, PS3, Wii U, Wii, PC '07, GC, PS2.
| Platforms | |||||||||
| There is a total of 19 different platforms as Steam has 2 (Steam 60 and Steam 30), PS4 has 3 (PS5, PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim/Fat), Xbox One has 3 (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X and Xbox One/S), and PS2, GC and Wii each have 2 (Disc vs USB). From fastest to slowest (based on the speed of the loading times) they are: Steam 60 > XSX > PS5 > X1X > Steam 30 > PS4 Pro > Switch > PS4 > X1 > X360 > PS3 > Wii USB > GC USB > Wii U > PC '07 > Wii > PS2 USB > GC > PS2. Note that a platform having faster loadings doesn't necessarily imply that that platform is faster overall in all the categories, because some versions have glitches or skips that others don't despite them having slower loadings. For more details, you can check the ETC tab that has the time limits for each platform so you can see what platform is actually the fastest and how it compares to the others.
| Platform specifications
| Type of drive | SSD | SSDs can be used in Steam, PS4 (only Pro and Fat/Slim) and PS3, even though SSD is faster, we don't have separate categories for SSD/HDD. USB only applies to GC, Wii and PS2, running the game on USB is faster than on disc, the USB versions are separated from the disc versions.
| HDD | |||||||||
| USB | |||||||||
| Framerate | 60 FPS | The different framerates affect the speed of the game (60 being obviously faster), the amount and type of glitches, the enemy aggression, the game physics (hitboxes for example), etc. The 60fps versions are Steam (60fps), PS4 (all platforms), Xbox One (all platforms) and Switch, all the other ones are 30fps.
| 30 FPS | |||||||||
| Region | NTSC | North American version of the game (doesn't exist on Steam), it has a higher starting DA (difficulty adjustment) for Normal difficilty (including SW and AA), doesn't have Easy nor Amateur, the GC NTSC version is a completely different version of the game as it is the very first version to be released (for more informations, you can check the doc above that lists the differences between each version/region).
| NTSC-J | Japanese version of the game, allows you to play on Amateur (except on GC/GC USB where it doesn't exist), it also has some extra texts and a violence censor so crits are different. Has a lower starting DA compared to NTSC.
| PAL | European version of the game (doesn't exist on any of the Xbox One platforms nor Switch), same DA as NTSC-J.
| Rules | |||||||||
| We accept times without video for all runs not going for World Records, but if going for a World Record time we do like to have some proof, like a video, image, game leaderboard link/pic, etc. of your end time. Having said that, there are times where having proof could mean something other than having a video, image, etc. We have a couple of WR times on this board that do not have links to proof, but have been proven legit by using game leaderboards, or having more than one community member seeing the time in question to confirm it true (like on social media private chats where they will see the time in question on webcam, image, etc, but the image is not saved). Being runners of RE4, we know fake times when we see them and also know who the cheaters of the world are! We want every runner (new and old) to have the opportunity of putting their time on the leaderboard for Resident Evil 4. This sheet is the best place to look for times if you want just the records without the hassle of forums. ^_^

| Tabs | |||||||||
| Recent runs | Lists all the runs that have been updated within the last 30 days (we use the date where the run was added on the sheet, not the date where the run was done). The runs that are WR are automatically highlighted with a light red background.
| WRs | Lists all the WRs for Single Segment, Segmented and Mercs for all the versions, categories and difficulties. The WRs that are highlighted with a light red background are WRs that are not optimized (yet).
| ETC | Lists all the runs that made it to the exclusive time club (for more info, check the text at the top of the ETC tab).
| Search | Lets you search a runner among all the ones that the sheet has (there is a dropdown cell where you can choose from there or simply type the name of the runner yourself), the tab automatically lists all the runs this specific runner has and shows at the top some stats and ranks for this runner in terms of runs, WRs and most recent run.
| Flags | Lists all the runners that have a run on this sheet including some information for each runner: the country and the flag, the number of runs and WRs the runner has, the date of their last run and the average rank of the runner (it's the average rank of all the runs of a runner, the rank is simply the place on the board for a specific category, WR being rank 1 for example). The tab also has the same info aggregated by countries (number of runs and WRs by country, etc.) as well the number of active runners (an active runner is a runner that has a run done within the last 30 days).
| Archives | Lists all the WRs before a big skip was discovered, usually a big skip breaks the leaderboard so it's good to have a history of what the WR was before a specific skip.
| WR history | Shows two graphs with the history of all the WRs for the main versions for NG Pro and NG+ Normal, on the right there's the data with the date of the WR, the version and runner's name.
| Stats | Shows some tables with the number of runs/runners/active runners for each version and type (Single Segment, Segmented and Mercs).
| Changelog | Lists all the different changes that were done on the sheet with the date for each change.
| Data | Basically the database of the sheet, it's used to automatically get all the other tabs loaded (this tab could be hidden but it's there if people want to see it).
| Leaderboard | All the other tabs (Steam, NG+, NG, SW, SW+, AA, NM, Mercs and S&Q) are the actual leaderboard tabs with all the runs.
| LRT definition | |||||||||
| Note: This sheet has always ranked the Steam runs by IGT (first because when the first LRT was released, it became unfair for older runs that didn't use the LRT to be low on the boards just because the new runs used a faster time and second, since there are so many LRTs (5 to this day), it makes comparisons really bad, so keeping IGT for everything (and putting in comments what LRT the runner used) is just better. If a runner has a faster LRT time but didn't PB on IGT, we still keep his best IGT run as his best run on the sheet, but we put in comments the LRT time (as well as the date and the type of LRT used) to keep track of that. Note that by definition, if a run has an LRT time and nothing is shown in the comment (or has an LRT time and another better LRT time in comment that just says "LRT" without specifying the type of LRT) it always means that the LRT used on that run is the current one (so currently the fifth one).
| Legacy LRT (aka first LRT aka RE4Central LRT) | First ever LRT made by Wipefinger with the help of the RE4Central team (Auddy & JC) introduced in February 2017, this LRT is 50 seconds to 1 minute faster than IGT (on New Game), it only removes the time during the "loading" text box bottom right of the screen.
| Wipe LRT (aka second LRT) | Second LRT introduced in March 2018, made by the same people, the Steam version had an update (going from 1.0.6 to 1.1.0 version) which made the old LRT obsolete since the game had new addresses. By trying to find the new addresses, we actually ended up finding an even better one that removes more loadings, this LRT is 1 minute and 40 seconds faster than IGT (on New Game), it removes extra time from the loading since it now removes the fade in animation before the "loading" text as well.
| Frame counter LRT (aka third LRT aka Pitted LRT) | Third LRT made by Pitted (and then finalized and optimized by Wipefinger) introduced in October 2019, this LRT is 3 minutes and 20 seconds faster than IGT (on New Game), it now removes inventory loadings and it also gives back the frames lost during frame drops. Since this LRT also removes inventory loadings, a lot of new Ditmans became worth it so this LRT became 4 minutes faster than IGT (on New Game, even more on New Game+ since there are more ditmans).
| Inventory buffer LRT (aka fourth LRT) | Fourth LRT made by Wipefinger with the help of Mysterion_06_ and Yuushi, introduced in September 2021, this LRT is 5 minutes faster than IGT (on New Game), it now completely removes the door & inventory loadings by removing all the black screen after the "loading" text (the second and third LRTs only removed a part of it), on the other side, it doesn't give back the frames lost during a frame drop anymore since the third LRT wasn't accurately doing that and there's no way to perfectly do that.
| Current LRT (aka fifth LRT aka LRT aka New LRT aka Yuushi LRT) | Fifth LRT made by Yuushi, introduced in February 2025, this LRT is about 1:40 minutes faster than IGT on average (on New Game), this LRT is actually slower than the previous one as it no longer stops on the inventory loadings (black screens when entering and exiting the inventory). The reason why we deleted these pauses on inventory black screens is because the runs became a ditman/equips simulator, doing a ditman (or just switching to a grenade to run faster) became worth it on pretty much every single room, so it was like losing time on RTA to save time on LRT (and it killed New Game+ since the whole run became just doing equips and ditmans, not fun to run or to watch). Not to mention that the previous LRT wasn't perfectly pausing during these inventory black screens. On top of that, the length of the inventory black screens isn't related to your PC, having a slower PC won't affect the speed of the inventory loadings (it's just doors + frame drops), so with all these things, there was no reason to keep the pauses on LRT black screens, so now the run is back to IGT ditmans/equips: only doing ditman/switching to a grenade when it's actually faster RTA/IGT. On top of removing the inventory pauses, this new LRT includes a brand new frame counter, this timer is actually tied to the frames in-game, and whenever you drop frames, the timer will run at a slower frame rate (just like the game itself), so this way we have a perfect frame counter (unlike the third LRT which was calculating how many frames you dropped and giving you back the frames you dropped when leaving the room or pausing the game). Note: Since this timer is now slower, we had to retime all the Steam runs on speedrun.com (otherwise it would be impossible to WR again), we did that through a script that automatically retimed all the runs by taking their IGT and removing X amount of time (for New Game 60fps, removing 1:40 since this LRT is 1:40 slower than IGT), this sheet isn't impacted by that since the runs have always been ranked by IGT.
