| tm | Some Lenovo laptops re-install a proprietary driver updater even after the machine has been wiped reports The Next Web. An Ars Technica forum user “ge814” noticed it first and was corroborated by Hacker News user “chuckup”. If Windows 7 or 8 is installed, the BIOS of the laptop checks for autochk.exe’ and overwrites the file with its own. On bootup it creates LenovoUpdate.exe and LenovoCheck.exe.Lenovo took advantage of the Windows Platform Binary Table meant to allow things like theft-prevention software to persist even if the laptop is wiped clean. Lenovo issued a patch this past spring but it is not automatically installed. If you have a Lenovo in the Flex Edge, G, S, Yoga, Y or Z series, you might want to look into this. | http://thenextweb.com/insider/2015/08/12/lenovo-used-a-hidden-windows-feature-to-ensure-its-software-could-not-be-deleted/
| sj | Venture Beat reports Twitter has increased the character limit for direct messages from 140 to 10,000. Twitter announced the change in June to give developers time to adapt. Users will begin seeing this change today across Twitter’s iOS and Android apps, Twitter.com, TweetDeck, and Twitter for Mac. It should be available worldwide within the next few weeks. . | http://venturebeat.com/2015/08/12/twitter-officially-removes-the-140-character-limit-from-direct-messages/
| tm | 9 to 5 Mac’s Marc Gurman reports that a pdf image from a resource file from OS X El Capitan’s Safari 9 browser shows a split-screen view on an iPad mini. Also, a developer tool in El Capitan for testing website designs has the option to simulate an iPad mini 3 running Safari in a split-view mode. Weird thing is, iPad mini’s don’t support split-screen in iOS9. So Gurman would like to bet you a tall cold Sarsparilla that a new iPad Mini is coming that supports split-screen in iOS9. Also we’re still all pretending like Apple schedule a media event September 9th, even though Apple has said no such thing. | http://9to5mac.com/2015/08/11/el-capitan-file-hints-at-faster-upcoming-ipad-mini-4-with-split-screen-apps-support/
| sj | Tom and I have a two-shot bad news in Big China tech scene couple headlines here. First, Alibaba reported revenue rose 28% to $3.27 billion last quarter but analysts wanted $3.39 billion according to Reuters. Transactions across Alibaba rose 34% which may sound high, but it’s the slowest growth in more than three years. Mobile revenue made up more than half of Alibaba’s commercial retail revenue for the first time, but mobile is also less profitable. In advance of the bad news, Alibaba announced it buy a big chunk of Chinese electronics retailer Suning Commerce Group. That’s the equivalent of eating a pint of ice cream for a major global corporation, I think. . | http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/12/us-alibaba-results-idUSKCN0QH1BP20150812?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews
| tm | And Reuters says TenCent may ask for a spoon. Tencent Holdings, most famous for WeChat, saw Q2 revenue grow 19% a little below what analysts expected. Fingers are being pointed at the gaming unit which grew 17% compared to last quarter’s 29% growth. Smartphone games grew 11% year over year compared to 82% last quarter. But the company nearly doubled its quarterly revenue in advertising and overall net income rose 25% in line with expectations. | http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/12/us-tencent-results-idUSKCN0QH14Y20150812?feedType=RSS&feedName=technologyNews
| sj | The BBC reports that Highways England in the United Kingdom plans to test 'electric motorways' that charge electric cars as they drive. Electric cables buried under the road generate electromagnetic fields, which are picked up by a coil inside the car and converted into electricity, using Shaped Magnetic Field Resonance. Highways England has completed a feasibility study and committed to non—public-road trials, by 2016 or 2017. Full details will be publicized once a contractor has been appointed. . | http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-33886180
| tm | Engadget reports Qualcomm announced today that graphics will run 40% faster in its next flagship CPU, the Snapdragon 820. The Adreno 530 GPU will also be 40% more power efficient. Qualcomm says it’s new GPU will be ready for “next-generation uses of virtual reality” and will serve as an upgrade to the Snapdragon 602A which is used in cars. It will also have a Spectra camera imaging unit with a wider range of colors and hybrid autofocus framework for smoother and more specific digital zoom. | http://www.engadget.com/2015/08/12/snapdragon-820-graphics//?utm_medium=feed&utm_source=Feed_Classic&utm_campaign=Engadget&ncid=rss_semi
| sj | The Verge reports that Stephen Ross, owner of the Miami Dolphins US football team, has invested one million dollars in a drone racing league called, um, The Drone Racing League. The league races small drones that can fly as fast as 70 mile per hour and use first person view racing so the pilot can see where the drone is headed. A trial run with six pilots in a warehouse in Yonkers was held earlier this summer. The first public race is planned for later this year. . | http://www.theverge.com/2015/8/12/9136279/drone-racing-league-one-million-backing
| tm | And this is a little inside baseball but it affects the sources that we rely on for tech news. NBCUniversal will invest $200 million in Vox Media, parent company of The Verge and ReCode. NBCU and Vox will collaborate on digital advertising. | http://recode.net/2015/08/12/nbcuniversal-buys-big-chunks-of-vox-media-and-buzzfeed/

| tm | You all seemed very interested in porkchop_d_clown's post which said "Google registered ABC.XYZ so Microsoft registered ABC.WTF" and pointed to that URL which redirects to Bing.com. Did Microsoft do that? The IP address in the domain name registration points to a Microsoft server but the registrant info is private. Microsoft told SearchEngineLand “Microsoft did not buy this domain and is not involved in the redirect to bing.com.” So... rogue employee? | http://searchengineland.com/is-bing-trolling-googlealphabet-with-abc-wtf-redirect-227587
| sj | habichuelacondulce posted a great article from Technical.ly about nycmesh.net, an organization building a decentralized mesh network across New York City. Members need only buy the hardware to join. Mesh networks connect nodes directly to each other so it works even if the Internet is down. NYC Mesh has about 17 nodes right now. Compare that to Guifi.net in Spain which has more than 29,000 nodes in the Iberian Peninsula and is expanding worldwide. . | http://technical.ly/brooklyn/2015/08/11/brooklyn-mesh-networks-red-hook-initiative/

| As a follow-up up to Allison's HATE of PowerPoint, a loathing that I share, I wanted to recommend the book "Presentation Zen" by Garr Reynolds [http://amzn.to/1Kckija] and the book "Presenation Secrets of Steve Jobs" by Carmine Gallo [http://amzn.to/1KckxdP]. I've found that if I plan my presentations with note cards, then convert to outlines, and don't jump into any software (my preference is Apple's Keynote) until I have the talk fully fleshed out, the slides become visual support and not bullet points. If you are someone that has to give a lot of presentations, these two books are highly recommended. Love the show - Co-Executive Producer Howard from South Jersey

It is too early to bet the profitability of your company on VR and we don't know how this market will play out in the next few years but hey its a possibility.
