When the holiday season arrives, change in diet is something we cannot resist. People start preparing delicious foods to give taste buds the treat they would look for the entire year. But this is also the fact that this change in diet can be devastating for oral health. And then there is a lot of activity we get engaged in during holidays and forget about the basic things we normally do every day, including the oral hygiene practices.

Having that said, the real need here is to ensure proper dental health. The instructions may be a little stricter as compared to those we follow in the normal days but it’s the oral health we are talking about. And then it is far more important to make sure that delights of holiday don’t turn into the dental complications. Therefore, there are a few things to care about if you want to maintain your oral health during holidays.

1. Although the holiday foods are hard to avoid, there are some which you need to avoid at every cost. These are the sticky and chewy foods. The sticky and chewy foods we eat in holidays are usually sweet. Sweet foods with high content of sugar can become breeding ground for oral bacteria which are known to cause infections. As a result, cavities and tooth decay can start to develop. Now if you are looking at caramel and hard candies, you may have to switch to something else if you don’t want to ruin your oral health during holidays.

2. Make sure that you are consuming plenty of water during the holidays. Sugar and other food particles stick to the teeth and they need to be washed away. Consumption of water can help in the very same purpose. Although this is the winter vacation in which it naturally becomes difficult to consume plenty of water, you can focus on it while keeping your oral health maintenance in mind.

3. And then like always, you need to stick with your oral hygiene practices. You may have to increase the number of times you brush. And then keep dental floss in your pocket. After every meal, you can use this dental floss to get rid of the small food remains stuck between your teeth. You can also use mouthwash to rinse away the bad particles. Mouthwash is also going to give you relief from bad breath.

Before the holidays start, it is ideal to consult with the dentist to have instructions for holiday oral maintenance. This dental visit is also going to be of great significance if you have any oral health condition and you want to avoid making things worse during holidays.
