369Tossal de Grau Circuit93460E/ALa NuciaFrom La Nucia drive south along the CV70 towards Benidorm to Km.44. Immediately after the sign turn R and zero your odometer. Drive along the surfaced road with Montebello urbanization on your L and a new urbanization across the barranco on your R. for approx 0.9 km to reach a roundabout. Go straight across this roundabout and continue until reaching a Y junction. Take the right hand fork which is a track that is rough in parts, pass a Casa on your L with blue domed roofs and continue for a further 2.5km to where a track goes off down L to a ruin, a total of 3.4 km from the CV70. This junction is the start and there is parking for several cars.

Note: After the blue Casa the track up to the start becomes very rough in places but is passable. If it proves too rough for your vehicle there are plenty of spots to pull off, park and walk the rest of the way to the start.
The valley between Puig Campana to the West and Ponoch to the North is very beautiful and, considering its proximity to the tourist areas, surprisingly unfrequented. The views of the mountains are excellent and from an unusual viewpoint. Puig Campana resembles a volcano while Ponoch reveals its massive bulk and stupendous cliffs. Climbers and walkers flock to the Collado del Pouet from Finestraat on their way to the summit or to circle Puig Campana but very few explore the tracks and paths to the S.E. below. Views to the south of Benidorm etc are interesting but distant enough to be unobtrusive when concentrating on the Mediterranean beyond.

Although this is a short walk it is steep. 90% on good tracks, some of which are muddy after heavy rain, and 10 % on a rough path.

Go to edge of village where the village name sign “Benifató” is and turn right. There is a sign Fuente Partagat on the wall. Follow this road to the fuente – a 10 minute steep climb. Car shuttle. An excellent walk on the northern slopes of Aitana with superb views on a clear day and a surprising view of the Castle. High altitude so choose weather.

Occasional snow. Tracks and paths not muddy on mostly obvious paths, 50% on forestry tracks. 10 minute each way optional scramble up to Castle, (not for sufferers from vertigo).

317Font del Arbres Circuit10.74.5330M/AConfridesFrom La Nucia drive along the CV70 through Benimantell and on towards Confrides. Immediately after Km 23, just as you enter Confrides, take the inconspicuous LH turn, which leads up through the very narrow streets of the village. After approx 300 meters take the road going up L, signposted Puerto de Tudons & Font del Arbres. Soon take the R fork up and wind up along this surfaced road 7km to the Font. Ample parking.A high level walk dominated by the escarpment of Aitana to the S and with a superb vista over a circle of mountains in all other directions. The start is at the pretty, well watered, and wooded, picnic area at Font del Arbre, which you reach by driving along the spectacular surfaced mountain road from Confrides. Confrides itself is a pretty unspoilt village with the good Hostal and bar of “El Piraneoâ€. By starting the walk at 1,170 meters you get directly into the mountains but at this altitude there is occasional snow and ice and in winter it can be very cold. In hot sunny weather there is enough shade. The basic walk is easy and there is an optional detour that brings it up to medium and lets you relate to, and see from above Font de Partagas and its surfaced road up from Benifato. The basic walk is 100% on good tracks and the detour of the medium walk is all on stony paths. Tracks can get very sticky after rain or melting snow.No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/yc442b5y

9.44.5585M/ALa NuciaFrom La Nucia drive south along the CV70 towards Benidorm to Km.44. Immediately after the sign turn R and zero your odometer. This is an allied walk to the medium Tossal del Grau Circuit. (A). With the addition of other steeper, higher and rougher paths. The walk links in with part of the well known Circuit of Puig Campana but going anti clockwise reveals different views. The valleys around Tossal del Grau are very beautiful and surprisingly unfrequented. Views are excellent. Puig Campana resembles a volcano from this direction and Ponoch hints at its massive bulk and sheer cliffs. No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/y92zp2d2

Buddhist Colony Circuit from Almaseras-extended
12.55550M/APolopFrom La Nucia drive along the new CV70 road towards Guadalest and Benimantell. Go to the KM38 sign and continue for a further 0.7 km and turn off sharp L up a concrete surfaced road (Note: Road is in good repair – only first 20 mtrs a little rough). Drive approx 2.7 kms to the junction with a track going up right with chain across. This is the start and end point. Parking for 3 cars, more on verges down the road.Energetic walk through Contador, Buddhist colony, and around Sanxet, all on good paths and tracks. No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/y7qnt2xg

359Sierra Aixorta Circuit104.5350M/BCastell de CastellsStarting from Tarbena drive 0.5km up the road in the direction of Col de Rates to the crest of the hill and take the LH surfaced road to Castells. (CV-752). Drive a further 7km (in 2012 at Km. 7 sign) to a broad straight track going L. (S).Follow this main track for approx 5 km, passing the sign to Ajub del Xarquet on LHS. and continue as it zig zags up to the start. (Steep sections surfaced).Park where the road comes to a T junction. There is a signpost indicating Font dels Teixos 3.3 km.This is a particularly satisfying and interesting walk once the possible obstacle of accessibility to the start is overcome. It is a high level walk both snowier in winter and slightly cooler in summer. The nonstop succession of views is superb and on a really clear day the islands of Formentera and Ibiza are visible some 100 km to the ENE. Dels Teixos is a delight, particularly on a hot day as it combines a north face, shady trees and cool water. A hut in which to shelter generally seems to be open and makes it a very pleasant place to wait while the less relaxed of the party climb the summit. The ascent of Penya Alta (Aixorta) from here is fun and not too arduous and rewarded with vertiginous views and an optional short “ridge scrambleâ€ to the W. Subsequent visits to the Nevera, (ice pit), and Morro Blau are interesting and there is the challenge of pathfinding to and from Font Major to come. At the end the cave’ (ice pit?), is curious and well worth an “end of walkâ€ push. A local bar would create perfection but Castells and Tarbena are not far. 70% good tracks. 30% poor paths. No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/y9lfgs86

11.84.5544MS/ABenissaFrom Calpe take the N332 towards Benissa. Before reaching Benissa , 750 meters after the KM 175 post, turn L, signposted Jalon, (CV750). In 100 meters again take the LH road signposted Pinos, (CV749). Drive 8 km to Pinos Restaurant on your RHS. From the 19 km post in Pinos drive 700meters to a bridge. Cross the bridge and immediately turn R onto surfaced road and park (Walk ends here). The lovely start to this walk is through a peaceful barranco to the 'Refugio Marnes'. Where a quick stop to admire the mules can be enjoyed before a short climb followed by a long flattish walk to reach the impressive Barranco del Baron. The barranco ends at a very picturesque area with an old well and ruin. This is followed by an uphill stretch which requires some path finding skills to arrive at a very pleasant grassy track. Now there is an easy walk through some interesting vineyards before reaching a paved track which traverses a cultivated valley. This is followed by a steep climb up to the saddle below Cau. Then short tracks and a long path down to the CV749 and car(s). 300Cau Ridge9.24.25540MS/AJalonFrom the N332 at approx Km. 176 take the CV750 towards Jalon, pass the Restaurant La Val, (Venta la Roja on map), on RHS & keep sharp lookout for the Camino Partida Cuta on LHS opposite a Garden Center. Drive down Camino Cuta about 650 meters to LH right angle bend and park. The ascent of Cau (724m) can be made up the ridge starting at its N end, but the writer prefers an indirect approach up the spectacular Barranco del Cau, or even the less dramatic route up the Barranco Carretes. Then up to the summit of Cau followed by the long gradual descent along the ridge, which provides excellent views.

The ravine of Barranco del Cau should not be missed if possible but it is somewhat vertiginous and occasionally steep so is safer to ASCEND rather than descend. The barranco is characterized by an old water pipe supplying Jalon from the upland springs with a series of small concrete huts, which seem to be a type of filtration system. The ascent via the Barranco Carretes, though a few meters more climb, is somewhat easier. Even if Cau itself is not climbed an excellent, easier walk is to walk up the Barranco del Cau and down the Barranco Carretes.

85% on paths. 10% on tracks, & 5% on roads. Few mud patches after rain but best not to risk the Barranco del Cau if slippery underfoot.

Drive 1.2 km. along this major unsurfaced road to a T-junction with, at present, a signpost and park your car(s).This is the start and finish point.Although there is an easier way to visit the Large Rock Arch this circular walk includes the Little Rock Arch and a traverse along the northern slopes of Aixorta. Both arches are geological curiosities and probably formed by a harder part of the roof of a cave the remainder of which has fallen in. The initial ascent to the Little Arch is arduous and can be mitigated by taking Variation A. To reach the Little Arch pathfinding skill is useful but not essential as the ground to its SW is generally passable with care. The descent to the Large Arch is steep and requires care. 70% on tracks, (some muddy after heavy rain) 30% on mostly rough paths. (Good boots are necessary to visit the Little Arch). Gloves and snips are often useful on the goat path up to the Little Arch.No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/mtbd5la

Drive approx. 300 mtrs down the road to tennis/sports centre and park up on the L.Pla de la Casa is the highest of the peaks which make up the magnificent Sierra de Serrella - the handsaw of mountains which flank the north side of the Guadalest valley. Seen from the valley floor they appear to be a vertical impenetrable wall of rock. But there are several routes which negotiate the ravines and slopes, making use of ancient livestock trails and paths hewn out by men who would scale the peaks to make use of the snow wells. The routes have been established over centuries and this one starts in the village of Facheca (Fageca). The climb alternates from gradual to steep but is rarely punishing and constantly stimulating. The views on reaching the narrow plateau close to the summit would melt the soul of all but the most hardened individuals. Much of the route follows the PRV- 182 path and is waymarked. Alternatively, park at the road and walk up the track to this junction. This is a strenuous walk, definitely not for walkers seeking a flat and easy path, but the effort is rewarded by wonderful scenery and interesting terrain. It starts innocently enough with a pleasant easy stroll along the south side of the Barranc del Manecillo before dropping down to the riverbed. This is followed by a short but adventurous walk along the riverbed. The long climb up to El Collada starts on a nice path that zig zags up out of the riverbed to reach a track. This meandering track leads up to a path where the real ascent begins and some path finding skills are necessary. Next the route heads W and crosses the top of a ridge where wonderful views of the Barranco del Moro can be enjoyed. Go to the KM38 sign continue a further 0.7km and turn sharp left up a concrete surfaced road. Drive approx 2.7kms to a junction with a chained track going up right. (Our return route). Spot a car here if possible. Continue up the road for approx. 2km. and park by the Casa de Dios (Painted Blue in 2011).A fairly long circular walk starting with a steep climb on good paths up the Barranco de Galabdar below the escarpments of Sanxet. Then heads west levelling out until the short but impressive zigzag up the Passet de Golers. Here there is a rocky lookout which makes an ideal lunch stop. Another steep climb to reach the peaceful Arc Valley and the Paso Contador with spectacular views. From here it is downhill (steeply in places) all the way back to the previously spotted car, which will be used to ferry drivers up the hill to the Casa de Dios. Although this walk can be easily walked as a complete circuit we shorten it, whenever possible, by spotting a car which avoids an uphill walk on a surfaced road. 57% Paths, 43% TracksNo dogshttp://tinyurl.com/lp6oyu4

10.94.5768S/B/ScrGuadalestFrom Callosa d' en Saria: Drive towards Guadalest on the CV 755 for 10 km to a side road going down R to the dam. Drive across the dam and continue on surfaced road for approx 4 km to a T-junction. Turn R up surfaced road, (ignoring road off R), for approx 0.6 km to a track going off left just past a large ‘Deputacion De Alicante’ sign. Turn left on to this track which is well surfaced but very narrow. Continue up until reaching a ruin on LHS and park. This strenuous walk has very little flat sections. The ups and downs are often very steep. The normal approach to El Castlett (Serrella Castle) is from the North at Castell de Castells. This more dramatic approach is from the the South near Guadalest. The ascent of the rugged Borranco de les Coves begins on the West side with a good path. A rock scramble brings us to the east side. This crossing is made more exciting when there is flowing water. The path continues ascending as it heads into the spectacular widening Canal of Malla de Lloup. About half way up the Canal we exit by zig zagings up the east side, affording great views of the Canal as we gain height. The very steep track leading up to the pinnacle of El Castelet can be daunting but good views offer excuses for many rest stops. The scramble up to the castle ruins (not for those suffering from vertigo) is rewarded with stunning 360-degree views. A steep decent followed by a nice ramble on an abandoned track to return to the Barranco de las Coves where we retrace our steps back to the start. No dogshttps://tinyurl.com/y7hnc372

The penalties are some grueling climbs and descents on very rough paths often amongst scree. But interspersed with paths through pinewoods and good forestry tracks which provide welcome variety.
