Rep. Clark Johnson9-Feb12:30 PM289 SOBHouse District 19A; North Mankato, St. PeterD. Ag Finance; Ag PolicyLocation: Mankato
Explanation: Minnesota Valley Action Council food hub delivers food to 14 Mankato-area schools
The MVAC Food Hub is a small non-profit local food
distributor in Mankato, MN. Since opening in 2014, we have made efforts to get
our locally grown produce to schools within our delivery area. Our experience
with Minneapolis Public Schools Farm to School program has been a great for the
growers we work with. If more school districts in our state were able to
implement a similar farm to school program, we would see a significant growth
in local food production in Minnesota. We don’t even need to capture a large
percentage of school fresh vegetable purchases to make a great impact on fruit
and vegetable growers in Minnesota. While public school lunch programs are one
of the most cost sensitive markets we have been exploring, we feel it is worth
the challenge given the many benefits. By adding educational aspects the MPS
Farm to School program, they are making a long term positive impact on the
lives of their students. They are teaching students the value of good nutrition
which will help them develop good eating habits early in life that will benefit
their health for many years to come.

Senator Andrew Lang9-Feb2:30 PM3205 MSBSenate District 17. located in west-central Minnesota and includes Willmar; Chippewa, Kandiyohi, Renville & Swift counties.R. Ag Finance; Ag PolicyLocation: Willmar
Explanation: Willmar School District was really the birthplace of Farm to School in Minnesota, I think possibly even before Mpls and St. Paul. Willmar was the pilot site for the Farm to School project initiated by Pride of the Prairie in 2004-2005, and then MISA based the original Farm to School Toolkit on the Willmar experience. That toolkit was developed in 2007-ish when Stephanie Heim was an intern with MISA. Once Stephanie was hired by Extension, the toolkit was also picked up by Extension.

MISA Newsletter: "The Family Tree of Farm to School"Graduated from Willmar High School. He is also a service member in the 34th Aviation Brigade.
