In order to memorise anything you need to engage both sides of your brain. This can be called 'Whole brain learning'. There is an idea that the 2 sides of your brain are responsible for different tasks. This is far too simple of a description to be true but for the benefit of this we will stick with it.
2
3
Left brain: likes order, logic, structure, rules
4
Right brain: likes colour, imagination, art, images
5
6
In order to remember, you give yourself the best chance if you keep both sides of the brain happy
7
8
For the Periodic Table of elements we use a memory technique called 'The Major System'
9
10
The Major System
11
Our brains do not hold onto numbers all that well so we take the 10 digits 0 - 9 and convert each of them into an image.
12
For example, 1 becomes a candle, 2 becomes a swan etc.
13
This is know as the number shape system. It will only get you so far. Why? Well what happens after 9? ten could look like a baseball and bat, 11 could like like...walking sticks? It starts to upset the left hand side of the brain, it loses structure
14
15
This gets us to the Major system.
16
17
Imagine you want to remember the number 2031. Straight away I think 'NoseMat'. Let me Explain.
18
Each digit 0 - 9 is given a corresponding letter or sound. 2 becomes 'n' because n has 2 downward strokes, 0 becomes 'z' or a 'ssh' sound. 3 becomes m because it has 3 downwards strokes, 1 becomes a 't' or 'd' because it has 1 downward stroke.
19
2031 becomes NZMT
20
We then fill in vowels to make it into a word always filling in the order AEIOU
21
NZMT then becomes NoseMat...allowing for some leeway with the 'z'
22
When I then hear NoseMat, I drop out the vowels and translate it back to 2031
23
24
If this was a PIN for my bankcard (which it is not!) I would then create an image connecting my bankcard to a NoseMat
25
Image: My bank has a new type of bankcard that also works as a nosemat for runny noses, its disgusting, how did it get out of the idea stage.
26
Now go to the next sheet to see some of how I built the structure for the table of elements.
