JAKUBANY GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH RECORDS Version 12/25/04
2
3
BAPTISMS Mid-1826 - 1895 Sorted primarily by Mother's surname & first name (incl. Common sort when no female surname)
4
5
Notes: -The word 'died' in the death column means that the child was baptized after he/she died and child had no godparents.
6
- Remember that the mother's maiden name was not usually given until the latter part of 1826. I make no attempt to write in the
7
maiden name from entries 1826+ when the maiden name was provided but leave that to you.
8
- Also remember that birth dates were not recorded in the baptism entries until 1852 when both birth and baptism dates were
9
given. In text format, the baptism dates appear in the middle of the 2 date columns. From 1852 on, I have chosen to include
10
the birth dates only (for the most part) because they are the more important of the 2 dates.
11
- After 1857, there are some illegitimate children that have notes in the observation column: Per subsequentus matrimonium
12
legitmus (PSML) of 'husb' giving the husband's name which seems to indicate the father of the child as well. No research has
13
been done to determine whether the illegitimate child's last name was that of the mother or father in death or marriage records.
14
- The record numbers don't necessarily correspond to the ones in the actual records because no record numbers were used
15
in the earlier records and due to numbering mistakes by the record keepers. In some cases, twins were on the same line.
16
- The man's name in parenthesis following a mother's name is her father's name.
17
- A date showing a range of dates like 18741101-7 means the film was too dark to read; that the birth was somewhere in the
18
range of the 1st to the 7th. In these cases, I will give the baptism date if legible.
19
- In some cases, even though only the mother's name is mentioned, not all children are marked as illegitimate, tho they pry are.
20
- The many question marks denote hard to read names/dates, guesses at partial or illegible names/dates.
21
- In some entries where 2 children names are given on the same line with the same parents shown, 'twins' is not always shown.
22
We could assume they are twins though, perhaps because children were not given middle names yet?
23
- There are oddities in the records. On one there were 2 death date notations: one over the child's name and the other in the
24
observation column. Also, several times, a baptism entry from a previous year is stuck in another year up ahead.
25
- There are several entries in the latter years (1890-95) where the locale (house # field) is given as a U.S. city, state or "America.".
26
I am given to believe that the baptism and birth took place in the U.S. location and that the US church priest sent the info
27
to the Jakubany church priest who recorded the info. Perhaps this is why several records are recorded out of date sequence.
28
Also, the record keeper, in several cases, numbered those out of place line entries with the next available number for that year.
29
If there is more than a few months that separate the birth and baptism dates, it is not known for sure whether the child was
30
baptized in the U.S. or Jakubany since baptisms usually occur as soon as possible after the birth.
31
- When looking for all the children of a female relation, be mindful of the other ways to spell the first name of the mother. Though I
32
have grouped the same meaning of the mother's firstnames together for 1772-1826 (Catharina, Katalin, Katharina etc), I have not
33
done so for the entries where both first and last names are given for the mother primarily in the years beyond.
34
- Since the mother's surname wasn't added until late in 1826, bapt records before then are of practically no benefit so those lines
35
are deleted as of April 13, 2004 unless her surname was given. I will maintain the complete file on a separate database if
36
anyone should want it emailed to them.
37
- Since the bapt/birth records are available from 10/1895 onward, there is no need to keep the estimated child births that took place
38
from Nov 1895 - 1900 that I extracted from the death records 1895-1900 unless I found no birth in the new 1895-1900 records. So I
39
have deleted them.
40
- In this resorting, the variant female same surname spellings are grouped together and female surnames beginning with Sza… will
41
be sorted without regard for the 'z' so spelling will be Sa…
