How can we improve the forum?

This may be just me, but it would be handy to be able to input in markdown as well as html. It seems pretty common to have editors that accept both.

Have an easily accessible link, either directly on every page or at a specific, bookmarkable location, to the current Open Thread and maybe other special threads as well (to access the open thread right now, you need to hit next page a couple of times, and discussion seems to have died down as a result)

Notify me by email of things that wind up in my "messages" folder (comment replies and private messages)! This would get me to come back on the forum a lot more.
