Public data for: Effect of diagnosis, body site, and experience on text entry rate of individuals with physical disabilities: A systematic review
2
12-19-2017
3
This spreadsheet includes a description of the methods used in our systematic review of text entry rate (TER) with access interfaces and provides public access to the data.
4
This is a companion to our manuscript by the same title, published in Disability and Rehabilitation: Assistive Technology.
5
We hope this will provide useful insight into some of the details of our approach and serve as a resource for answering other similar research questions.
6
7
The sheets in this workbook correspond to stages of the full-text screening and quantitative synthesis for each of the 7 interface types.
8
Please note that this workbook is made available for viewing only, not editing. (If you find that you are able to edit the document, please contact the authors.)
9
Please contact the authors with any questions.

Research Question: What are the reported text entry rates associated with individuals’ diagnosis, body site used with the interface, and their level of experience?

15
Expanding our original review of 39 studies into data for individual subjects and subject groups

Data Dictionary: each row is the text entry rate reported for one subject from a published study. The fields for each subject are described below.
20
studyID: an integer used to reference the study that presented these data. This is in also in Tab 10B of the main data extraction sheet, to allow us to trace back the reference. (See URL above.)
21
subjectID: a unique integer for this subject in this database
22
manuscriptSubjID: the number or text used for this subject inside the study manuscript (makes it easier to find this subject's data later if needed)
23
age: age of subject (years)
24
gender: gender of subject (M or F)
25
diagnosis: nominal category for this subject's medical diagnosis (categories basically from July lit review manuscript)
26
diagnosisDesc: a text description allowing more details about the diagnosis, if provided in the manuscript
27
function: some category or measure of function or functional impairment for this subject. TBD since almost never reported.
28
functionDesc: a text description about the subject's functional abilities and/or impairments
29
interfaceDesc: a text description of the interface used by the subject (e.g., Std Kbd, Cursor OSK, etc.). Can also include details, manufacturer, etc., either here or in scenarioDesc column.
30
bodySiteDesc: a text description about the body site
31
body site category: the motor site used to activate the control interface
32
wordPredUse: Yes or No for whether word prediction was used for this data point
33
Scenario: The combination of interface and settings that were used for this data point. 'primary' = the scenario we used in the original lit review. 'secondary' = another scenario reported in the study.
34
scenarioDesc: a text description about the scenario for these data (e.g., interface settings)
35
manuscriptSource: the figure, table, or text from which these data were taken (makes it easier to find the data in the manuscript if needed)
36
interface: nominal category for the interface used by the subject (categories are from July lit review manuscript)
37
numSwitches: an integer for number of switches used. Only relevant for switch-based interface.
38
bodySite: nominal category for the body part used to operate the interface (categories not yet defined)
39
bodySiteDesc: a text description about the body site
40
various settings...: a place to list all settings presented in the study for this data point that aren't covered in any other columns
41
selectionSet: nominal category for what items were available for selection during this scenario (right now it is redundant with wordPredUse)
42
wordPredUse: Yes or No for whether word prediction was used for this data point
43
cwpmTER: Text Entry Rate for this scenario in correct words per minute
44
error DV's: a text description of dependent variable(s) used to measure errors
45
error results: reported results for each error DV for this scenario
46
other scenarios?: a text description of whether any other scenarios are reported for this subject
47
Notes: text notes that relate to this scenario and subject
