Hey, come on in. Admission is free. Grab a bowl of popcorn (extra butter, of course) and find a seat smack dab in the middle - It’s time for Finding Christ in Cinema, episode 158.

I’m Michael, I’m Brenden.

Join us and together we’ll dig deeper into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today, we’ll take a closer look at the stories they tell, and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back.

We’re gonna explore the deeper meanings of these films; the plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.

You are tuned in to Finding Christ in Cinema on the GCTNetwork.

FCC 142 A Monster Calls

Humans are complicated beasts who need healing.

Connor: When I called you it was to save her. It was to heal her!
Monster: I did not come to heal her.
Connor: Yes you did!
Monster: I came to heal you.
Connor: Me! I’m the one who needs healing? How many times do I have to tell you! My mum’s the one who… ARRRGGGHH!! Help me.
Monster: It is time for the fourth tale.

Matthew 13:15 NASB

FCC 153 Midnight Special

We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard!

Watch Lucas. Alton invites him to "come and see."

Lucas has seen and keeps on seeing Alton Meyer and is transformed into a disciple; one that cannot help but to speak the truth - because there is freedom and life in that truth (light). He is like Peter and John who witnessed the transfiguration of Christ Jesus.

Acts 4:18-20 NASB

1 John 1:1-4 NLT

FCC 126 To Kill A Mockingbird

The Golden Rule (Royal Law) and the Mind of Christ Jesus

Atticus Finch understands the Royal Law - also called the Golden Rule. Jesus expressed it this way, Treat others the same way you want them to treat you (Luke 6:31). James said it another way:

James 2:8 (NASB)

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view... Until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

Philippians 2:1-5 NRSV

FCC 131 Arrival

Quick to Listen; Slow to Speak. Two ears; one mouth.

Dr. Louise Banks comprehends the basic problems in communication between vastly different cultures; and that there is much to work out before understanding can even begin. See quote by Atticus Finch and walking in another's shoes (skin).

James 1:19 NLT

Proverbs 18:21 NET

FCC 155 Wonder Woman

Who'll sing for us. You're one of us!

Charlie’s Story: Grace and Faithfulness, or Freedom to Perform - Identifying spiritual gifts in others.

Charlie: Maybe you're better off without me, yeah?
Diana: No, Charlie. Who will sing for us?

No. We won't be better off without you. We are not better without you. We need you. We want you. You are one of us. You are part of the company. You're hurting, and I am going to lift you up, encourage you.

Ephesians 4:29 NLT
SCRIPTURE

=== A Monster Calls ===

Matthew 13:15 NASB
For the heart of this people has become dull,
With their ears they scarcely hear,
And they have closed their eyes,
Otherwise they would see with their eyes,
Hear with their ears,
And understand with their heart and return,
And I would heal them.

=== Midnight Special ===

Acts 4:18-20 NASB
And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”

1 John 1:1-4 NLT
We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us. We proclaim to you what we ourselves have actually seen and heard so that you may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. We are writing these things so that you may fully share our joy.

=== To Kill A Mockingbird ===

James 2:8 (NASB)
If, however, you are fulfilling the royal law according to the Scripture, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” you are doing well

Philippians 2:1-5 NRSV
If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves. Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus

=== Arrival ====

James 1:19 NLT
Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.

Proverbs 18:21 NET
Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love its use will eat its fruit.

=== Wonder Woman ===

Ephesians 4:29 NLT
Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Ephesians 4:32 NLT
Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.
Honorable Mentions

FCC 124 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

You're one of us!

Whereas Thorin Oakenshield and the Elven-king Thranduil divide into sects (heretics), the dwarf Bofur welcomes Bilbo Baggins into the company as a full participant with all the rights and privileges. In fact, he doesn't want Bilbo to leave the company under any circumstances:

Bofur: Where do you think you’re going?
Bilbo: Back to Rivendell.
Bofur: No! No! You can’t turn back now, eh? You’re part of the company. You’re one of us!

Ephesians 2:14 NLT
For Christ himself has brought peace to us. He united Jews and Gentiles into one people when, in his own body on the cross, he broke down the wall of hostility that separated us.

FCC 133 Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

You're one of us!

It turns out that Jacob Kowalski - a no-maj (no magic) - is a fantastic beast who is no beast at all because the dividing wall between magic folk and Muggles has been removed thanks to the work of Newt Scamander - a picture of Jesus.

Jacob: You're not going to Obliviate me?
Queenie: Of course not. You're one of us now.

Galatians 3:28-29 NLT
There is no longer Jew or Gentile, slave or free, male and female. For you are all one in Christ Jesus. And now that you belong to Christ, you are the true children of Abraham. You are his heirs, and God’s promise to Abraham belongs to you.

PS Philip Comment on A Christmas Carol (1984) | FCC 157Hey guys, I'm pretty sure this is my first time seeing this version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL, and I really enjoyed it. It seems every iteration has it's own identity, but still shows Dickens' timeless message of redemption. George C. Scott really seemed to embrace Scrooge's wickedness, and delighted in a dark sense of humor. Am I a bad guy for being amused by that? Don't answer!

One thing that stands out this time is how Scrooge had the workings of grace and goodness in his life and would show them as a young man. But then his love was drowned out by fear, fear of scarcity- even when he had plenty. I haven't listened to the audio book in a while, so the role of his father stood out to me. His father's coldness, distance, and lack of grace crippled Scrooge. And it wasn't unti l he was an older man that he recovered. Who knows how Scrooge's life would have been if his father loved him properly, rather than blaming him for something that was not his fault- the death of his wife in childbirth.

Love the show guys! #muhweeladgimli

P.S.- There's a terrific 2002 adaptation of NICHOLAS NICKLEBY with Charlie Hunnam, Anne Hathaway, Jim Broadbent, Timothy Spall, Jamie Bell, Alan Cumming, and Christopher Plummer that captures Dickens so well. Until just recently it was on Amazon Prime, but is now available to rent or free with ads on Vudu. It's so good!
