ABOUT THIS NC DATABASE
2
In March 2020, the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) released “District Responses to COVID-19,” (linked below) an online database tracking how some of the nation’s largest public school districts have shifted instruction, student support, and organizational operations in response to COVID-19 school closures. CRPE continues to update the database on a regular basis as district plans shift and evolve.

EdNC and researchers from Chapel Hill-based Public Impact have joined forces to create a North Carolina version of this database to provide a similar set of information for state leaders, district leaders, school leaders, and the public.

In alignment with CRPE’s national database, this North Carolina database outlines districts’ responses to COVID-19 according to a series of standard indicators, covering district curricula, instructional methods, and support for special populations. In some cases, where additional context or information is desirable, brief explanations accompany the standard indicator responses.

This database does not include all CRPE indicators, but it does include additional indicators specific to this project. Where applicable, the database differentiates between CRPE and non-CRPE-aligned indicators. While we are so grateful to CRPE for creating this framework and providing guidance, CRPE did not play a role in compiling this NC database. Any errors and omissions are the responsibility of Public Impact and Education NC.

Included within this database are two tabs:
-Definitions – Explanations of each indicator included within the database and how this indicator could be coded.
-NC District Response Dataset – The dataset, which contains links to each district’s response plan and our analyses of these plans.

PROCESS FOR POPULATING THE DATABASE
5
To populate this database, we searched for districts' publicly posted plans via district and school websites. As a follow-up to this initial research, EdNC sent a survey to NC school districts in an effort to fill in information gaps and gain on-the-ground context for district and school responses. From there, we populated the database with available information.

This is a preliminary review of information and is not exhaustive. We strive to provide information that is accurate, complete, and current, but we realize district plans are changing rapidly. If you have direct knowledge of a school system’s digital learning plans or see information in our database that needs updating, please contact Molly Osborne at mosborne@ednc.org.
