Embrace Diversity. Foster Belonging. Cultivate Inclusion
The objective is to get the parents/caregivers more involved in the school, to feel comfortable with speaking up and co-collaborate in their child's education, identifying oppression in its many forms and addressing it. The goal is ultimately to empower the parents/caregivers and get them more involved. Individual voices are heard and recognized. Promote a sense of belonging and community.
Our project will include:
1. an anonymous survey to identify needs, concerns and goals of the parents/caregivers in our community and a conversation circle to discuss the results of this survey. Opportunity for parents/caregivers to make suggestions to school administrators, school council and teachers regarding any issue with racism, issue with equity, and anti-oppression.
2. integrate a speaker/resources/workshops on ally-ship/inclusion/belonging and how to speak to children about these issues, in the parent/caregiver outreach event.
3. host an in-person arts-based creative experiential event that engage parents/caregivers in building ‘safer’ spaces within the school council and parent community to address strengths, challenges and issues around race, inequity and oppression in support of cultivating a welcoming, and inclusive (belonging) culture within the parent council and school parent community. Trustee Ehrhardt, Ward 15Chester Elementary SchoolFostering Resiliency and Belonging
After our school experienced a hold and secure (Sept 27) we realized that a high proportion (20% +) of our families were from areas of the world that had very recently experienced war. This was an incredibly traumatic experience for them and when our principle and parent council saw and heard about the sheer terror and ultimate relief in knowing their children were safe we knew we had to do more to help foster a sense of well being and safety at our school. With ongoing wartime issues around the world (and with a high proportion of our families coming from areas of the world where conflicts are ongoing), mental health initiatives and tools for families to not only employ at home but also for students to hold onto at school could not be more timely or vital to everyone's wellbeing. Our goal with this grant is to provide our families with these tools to help them feel more safe and secure and ultimately to foster a more positive sense of wellbeing and belonging at Chester Elementary School through our partnership with Captains & Poets and their student-centred but heavily parent-involved in-person workshops. Coincidentally, but independently, several teachers at our school are pursuing grants to set up a sensory room that will be available to everyone at the school as a safe space which will be student-led and based on their needs and their directions to ensure their voices are empowered. The workshop by Captains & Poets will go hand in hand with their brainstorming for their needs for the sensory room (which is a multi-step project, completely independent). Overall, our aim with our project is to empower our students and our families and improve their sense of self and well being at school and in their community.

We want parents/guardians to engage with an Indigenous artist, learning how to craft an item that has historically been important to Indigenous culture - hopefully a deerskin medicine bag. In creating the item together, we will also discuss Truth & Reconciliation topics in a safe environment. Topics will be proposed by the Indigenous facilitator and chosen by the parents/guardians who will be attending. These topics may include cultural appropriation vs appreciation, understanding the medicine wheel/bag, the T&R 94 Calls to Action, Indian Status myths, etc.. The goal is to provide parents/guardians a place to ask questions and take away a greater understanding and appreciation of contemporary Indigenous peoples. We hope the activity aligns with discussions happening in the classrooms, making parents/guardians more comfortable bridging home and school with discussions of Indigenous issues at home.

Fairness Across the Food Chain - Cooking up Conversation
"In collaboration with FoodShare, we will be offering a workshop where caregivers from the school cook a meal together, while a facilitator leads a workshop, outlined below:
‘This workshop explores different sites of oppression and exploitation – of both land and people – along the food chain. Through facilitated conversations, your team will do a deep dive into the environmental and social impacts of our food system, asking questions like: Who holds power and privilege along the food chain? Who doesn’t? How can we transform the food system into an equitable and just one? We’ll also talk about changes we can make at home to work toward a fairer food system, putting this into practice as we learn how to make ‘empty the fridge’ Chinese dumplings as a way of reducing food waste.’
So, via conversation and learning on anti-oppression, food justice, and cooking healthy meals on a budget, our goal is to build relationships between our school’s caregivers, and increase a sense of engagement and belonging for all of our school’s families. There is also something uniquely powerful about cooking together, which we hope to leverage to support close connections between the participants.

"To improve communication, connections, collaboration, health & wellbeing, and a sense of belonging amongst all people in our school community. Using customized mindfulness programs through two mental health workshops to learn strategies to decrease stress and be kind to ourselves and others. We will learn to role model positive behaviours for a legacy for our children and community.
This year, EYCI is considering moving Commencement from October to June, to be more inclusive and remove barriers that prevent attendance (only half the graduates attended this Oct.). While it is following a 'best practices' approach (89% of TDSB high schools now celebrate in June), unfortunately it has divided parents/caregivers and teachers on both sides and has led to decreased kindness, feelings of being excluded and bullying.
To address the challenges of outdated traditions and some peoples' reluctance to change, we believe improvements in mental health will be possible using an innovative approach through a TDSB approved facilitator.
The plan is to create a sense of belonging within EYCI by acknowledging & valuing parents/caregivers' assets, in a safe and inclusive environment where individuals are empowered to prevent & address bullying, while finding similarities in each other. Being able to agree that celebrating Commencement in June will be beneficial for every graduating class at EYCI in the future. Improving mental health & wellbeing can have a significant impact, not only on the parents/caregivers attending the events, but also on their children at EYCI, their families, co-workers, and our community. The School Council Innovation Grant will help us demonstrate that Mental Health Matters at EYCI!"

“Good Health and Well-being: Join us for an evening of Bollywood Dance, Yoga and Mehndi!”
"Part of our School Improvement Plan is to centre student lived experiences, mental health and well-being, strengthening caring relationships and developing positive peer interactions, so that students develop their optimism, self-confidence and resilience which are essential to their success. In essence, we will provide students with a sense of belonging, engagement and joy as we make connections as a “community of learners” beyond the walls of the classroom. The majority of our community identify as South Asian as reported in the latest TDSB Census data, with Hindu and Muslim being the main religions of our student population. We have just been designated as a Model School effective September 2023.
November is Hindu Heritage Month – a month to recognize and celebrate the rich tapestry of Hindu traditions. We value parent voice, seek authentic opportunities for community outreach and promote a positive school climate. In an effort to support student and community joy, belonging and connection, the Glamorgan School and School Council are partnering to host an artistic evening of expression. Our primary goal is to create a safe sense of belonging for students and their parents/caregivers through Bollywood dance, yoga and Mehndi design, in an effort to move our community from having membership of our school learning community to ownership. In addition, our secondary goals are to strengthen the connection between home and school; provide an opportunity for students and families to spend quality time with their children while engaging in culturally relevant pursuits; supporting mental health and well-being through physical activity and artistic expression; as well as having fun, relaxing and reducing stress through dance and gentle yoga stretches. We are hoping that this will be the first of additional family engagement events this year. This first one is focussing on well-being, belonging and joy. We would then like to build on this momentum and hope to host additional family engagement events in the new year that focus on educational workshops for families to support literacy and numeracy at home. Trustee Laskin, Ward 8Glen Park Public SchoolNutrition and Wellness
To educate families about nutrition and how it ties in with overall wellness, learning and positive behaviour. At our school, many children need to use the breakfast and snack program. It is important for all parents to know how nutrition ties in with learning and performance at school. It is also important for them to know that all students are eligible for these programs, and all parents can volunteer to help with the nutrition program despite their race or economic status. We would like to plant a school garden with the grant money, and would like parents to volunteer their time to help create, plant and maintain the garden with their children, throughout the spring/summer months. This will allow families to work and learn together, and students can use the items they plant and will teach them a great way to be self-sufficient and healthy.

The goal of the project is to engage all parents and caregivers in the school community by hosting two evenings of African Drumming and Dancing to create a sense of belonging, be an opportunity for the representation of and exposure to African heritage at our school, and build better understanding of an opposed group. African Drumming and Dance provides an active, hands on experience that is an entryway for the greater representation of and appreciation for African and African diaspora history, culture and tradition throughout the school community. JR Wilcox is a small but mighty community located in mid-town Toronto. Our school community is of a lower income bracket. Around 70% of our students identify as BIPOC and 50% of our students’ parents are born outside of Canada. The project is designed to address key needs in our school community, including the need to create unique opportunities for parents and caregivers to feel a sense of connection with the school community of parents and staff. The intent is to then build on that engagement to have greater representation of Black, Indigenous and other equity deserving populations within the school, to enable more spaces and opportunities for the voices of racialized parents and caregivers to be centred, and for parents and caregivers to collaborate with educators to have learning reflect the diversity of the school. This project is a stepping stone and enabler for this broad change. The project includes two evening sessions of African Drumming and Dance, led by an external instructor. The sessions would be focused on engaging parents and caregivers but would be open to their children as well. Two sessions would be offered to maximize participation.

Last year we successfully started a community garden. We created 4 garden beds and planted tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and herbs. We would like to use the funds to expand the garden and include an indigenous focus for some of the vegetables planted, including corn, beans and squash. We had students watering and taking care of the garden, parents assisted in taking care of the garden on weekends and in the summer. Families from the community regularly accessed and harvested the vegetables throughout the summer and fall. We are improving access to fresh vegetables, educating about planting, and this year, would like to add an indigenous education component for students and the community.

For our parent/caregiver population to value and better understand the cultural diversity within our school community, with the ultimate goal of creating an inclusive and anti-racist culture. The Idea: Diversity Celebration Days Leveraging the TDSB student centric approach to combating hate and racism, our project focuses on two areas in the strategy; Caregiver Engagement and Learning, and Building partnerships with community agencies and educators whose voices are often not heard to support extending learning opportunities in dismantling hate and racism.

Antisemitism Then & Now: Workshops for Rawlinson Parents
"To provide two educational workshops for the Rawlinson parent community focused on Antisemitism, to help raise awareness and understanding in our community. Antisemitism is the most reported creed-based hate crime in the TDSB system and is getting worse by the day. We will have 2 educators from the Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (a TDSB approved partner organization), deliver two 90-minute workshops for Rawlinson parents exploring the historical and contemporary manifestations of antisemitism, while promoting tolerance and inclusion for all families. The workshops will be in-person at the school gym and also on Zoom in order to reach as many families as possible.
Workshop Description:
Antisemitism has been called one of the world’s oldest forms of hatred, dating back more than 2,000 years in the archeological record to Greek and Roman sources. Tragically, this type of hate continues to thrive today in the 21st century, with many of the same myths and tropes continuing to be perpetuated. This 90 minute workshop will look at patterns of antisemitism evidenced from antiquity to present day, discussing how to identify this form of hate and suggest ways in which to address it in our contemporary world today.
The purpose of the workshop is to educate and build awareness about the topic of antisemitism from an historical to contemporary context. Understanding historical forms of antisemitism places current incidents within a broader spectrum of understanding of the seriousness and longevity of this form of hatred and intolerance. It also informs conversations about how naming and calling out antisemitism alongside building allyship can work towards countering this hate. All of this work is about valuing diversity and inclusion and using one’s power and privilege to contribute to diversity and inclusion.

Empower & Unite: A Resilience-Building Workshop for a Diverse Community
Our school faces a myriad of challenges, including being designated as a TDSB model school and having a high LOI ranking (39). Many of the school's families are not only marginalised, but also incredibly diverse, facing additional complexities tied to race, gender, sexuality, class, and disability. Resilience, or the ability to rebound from stressors and challenges to regain a positive and empowered mindset, is essential for all and is one of the best indicators of academic success. However, it doesn't manifest in a one-size-fits-all manner. Our project aims to teach parents resilience strategies that are sensitive to these intersectional factors. Through this, our goal is to empower both parents and students, to equip parents with practical, real-world strategies for building resilience, both for themselves and for their children, while fostering a greater sense of belonging and unity within our community.
