18 | Literacy; SpEd/504/Dyslexia | 6/6/2024 | 8:30-3:30 | Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program and Rite Flight: A Classroom Comprehension Program | Rite Flight: A Classroom Reading Rate Program and Rite Flight: A Classroom Comprehension Program are curricula written by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia & Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children. Rite Flight programs equip teachers and reading specialists to help students increase their reading rate, fluency, and comprehension. When used as a supplement, Rite Flight programs should be integrated into a core reading program to adequately address fluency and/or comprehension. Rite Flight programs are designed to be individual, small group or whole classroom Tier II interventions for use by classrooms, reading specialists and special education teachers with 1st – 8th grade students. It may be used for more intensive instruction within the framework of a Response-to-Intervention (RTI) model. Rite Flight: Rate differs from standard reading fluency instruction by using a method of instruction designed to promote the recognition of letter clusters within words. Students follow a repeated reading schedule that introduces the same words in isolation, in phrases and finally in stories. As a fluency component of primary grade reading remediation and instruction, Rite Flight: Rate should be introduced early in the course of instruction in letter-sound recognition and should not be delayed until after phonics has been taught. Rite Flight programs are not intended to be used in place of a comprehensive intervention for students identified with dyslexia, as each addresses only one component of reading. Materials must be purchased from Texas Scottish Rite Hospital: https://scottishriteforchildren.org/research-and-education/education/dyslexia-educator-center Rite Flight Downloadable Kit ($155.25) and Rite Flight Physical Items Kit ($52.33) prior to the training. 24 | Literacy | 6/7/2024 | 8:30-3:30 | Write on command? Yes they can! | Can our students succeed on the ATLAS writing exam without our help? Maybe. Some might succeed. But will they all try? Or even most of them? The test is not high stakes; students try harder if the results impact them in some way. Because we don’t have that variable working in our favor, we have to approach teaching writing in a different way. Another hurdle in teaching writing is many students (and even adults) don’t believe they can write. They view writing like they view art. One either has the talent or one doesn’t. We have to show students that ALL of them have the ability to be talented and sophisticated writers. Writing on Command teaches students specific techniques that make their writing shine. Writing on Command starts with the narrative. The techniques that enhance narrative writing are noticeable (even glaring), so once students master the techniques and read what they’ve written, they are impressed. Join this workshop to see how you can transform your apprehensive writers into eager writers. We will focus on learning the techniques that enhance all genres as well as the techniques that are genre specific. You will leave the workshop with a stronger understanding of what makes writing great and how to transform your students into writers. | Sarah Stratton | 3-10 teachers | 520293 | Face to Face

69 | math | 7/11/2024 | 8:30-3:30 | Numeracy Consultants: Diagnostic Math Assessments and Targeted Interventions | Do you find it difficult to determine where learning acceleration needs to specifically occur with your mathematicians? Do you find it difficult to know exactly how to intervene with mathematics? We have several literacy assessments which allow us to pinpoint where intervention needs to take place, however math has always seemed to be a guessing game. Now we have research based assessments and interventions available to us with the programs developed by Numeracy Consultants. This session will give a general overview of the four programs offered by Numeracy Consultants: the Numeracy Readiness Screener, Primary Numeracy, Multiplicative Thinking, and Fractional Reasoning. The session will then take a deeper dive into the first two programs (Numeracy Readiness Screener and Primary Numeracy), demonstrating how to facilitate the assessments and how to utilize the targeted interventions. The beauty of these assessments is that they look at how students think mathematically, not simply that they can compute numbers. These interventions can be utilized for Tier 1, 2, and 3 instruction, and data collected using the programs are ideal for RtI. | Marla Edwards and Tara Sanders | k-8 teachers and interventionists | Face to Face
