| The History of Analytics on NHL Hockey Players | From the beginning of the first professional organized NHL hockey game in 1917, statistics from games and players have evolved. This timeline will show the evolution of statistics brought in to analyze skaters in hopes of effectively predicting desirable team outcomes. | https://www.flickr.com/photos/pmorningd/5347304450/in/photolist-99wkjj-4sz1W9-7Ew8G9-DVrSr-ojyqex-2jHxAso-2kyRny2-8A6of-29ymULG-yfJs6S-2jDXEXL-2gKQUXm-S96gBE-2iB2XK2-4nbzjL-aaqRj-21tmm2y-4cyKDs-4G5wWJ-2htpbav-2iEFSgm-rtw88m-4g5G7n-2hoi6fJ-542P4C-5ZmsQY-2iXToCa-26QtgSs-2hYLpPK-5U8kQi-2jDFKnm-2dk3nXp-F14TBJ-AApA1-2d9krVB-2gzJ3na-KcyCD-5iok7t-2hkfRKp-geTEy-LtcHD-HPk4t-5814pT-2iFQ1fc-asCxXk-7Chk2T-8f5j1f-TEbF3u-8rgJkF-6j1EEu | Scott via flickr | Hockey team picture from the 1910s to 1920s. | title
| 1917 | 1918 | 1917-18 NHL Season | The first organized NHL season was composed of 4 teams from Canada. Each game came with a scoresheet that archived the plays throughout a match. During the first official season, the only statistics recorded and analyzed were goals, assists, points, penalty minutes (PIM), and games played. | https://i.redd.it/7syfpmp0o9401.jpg | Posted by u/bananahands0666 via Reddit | Replica scoresheet from a game featuring the Montreal Candadiens and Ottawa Senators. | #333333
| 1933 | 1934 | Special Teams | According to the history of statistics on the NHL website, special teams analytics began being recorded in the 1933-34 season. Special teams are groups of players that are on the ice when either team is not able to play a maximum of 5 players. This situation usually happens when a referee calls a penalty on a player resulting in that player sitting in the penalty box for a minimum of two minutes. During this time, play can go from 5v5 to 5v4, 4v4, 4v3, or 5v3. When a player with the advantage over the other team scores during this time it's referred to as a powerplay goal (PPG). If the team down a player or two scores it is called a short-handed goal (SHG). This also led to statistics on even-strength (5v5) being recorded and analyzed. | https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vintagedetroit.com%2Fblog%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2013%2F02%2Fgordie-howe-fighting-detroit-red-wings-featured.jpg&f=1&nofb=1 | N/A | Fight during an NHL game.
| 1959 | 1960 | Shots | Shots began being recorded and archived by each player and team during the 1959-60 NHL season. With this new measurement, analysts could identify players with the highest shooting percentage (S% or SHT%). Shooting percentage is "the rate in which a player or teams shots on goal result in goals for the player or team. Shooting Percentage is calculated by simply taking the total number of goals scored and dividing it by the number of shots on goal." | https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/photos/284173614/1284x722/cut.jpg | Courtesy of NHL.com | Bobby Hull winding up for a slap shot. | #333333
| 1997 | 1998 | Ice Time & Faceoffs | During games, scorekeepers and analysts began tracking ice time each player would record during a game along with the faceoffs taken and won. A faceoff is a situation when both teams need to restart play after a stoppage. It occurs on one of the 9 circles on the ice where two players battle for the possession of the puck. The two statistics used for recording would be seen as time on ice per game played (TOI/GP) and faceoff win percentage (FOW%). This would help analysts and scouts find players who could help gain puck possession and log hefty ice times. | https://cms.nhl.bamgrid.com/images/photos/289405444/2048x1152/cut.jpg | Courtesy of NHL.com | Eric Lindros with the puck.
| 2007 | 2008 | Corsi | A financial analyst by the name of Tim Barnes developed Corsi, a major first step in advanced hockey analytics. Corsi is designed to track shot attempt differentials while at even strength (5v5) play. This includes shots on goal, missed shots on goal, and blocked shot attempts towards the opposition's net minus the same shot attempts directed at your own team's net. Corsi would help analysts and scouts find out how long a player could help a team stay in the offensive zone. The more time in the offensive zone the more likely a player could score a goal or contribute towards a goal in hopes of winning a game. | https://i2.wp.com/novacapsfans.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/f704fbf2-3497-4dcb-9043-0bddcd35b4c5.jpeg?resize=640%2C414&ssl=1 | Jon Sorensen | Tim Barnes (left) seen with the Stanley Cup after winning it with the Washington Capitals. | #333333
| 2007 | 11 | 27 | Fenwick | The Fenwick statistic was founded by a blogger from Alberta, Matthew Fenwick. Fenwick is similar to Corsi but doesn't include blocked shots since blocking shots is a positive trait for a defenseman or forward in the defensive zone. Focusing on Fenwick is seen as a possible measure of future success for a player. | https://mapleleafshotstove.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Fenwick-chart-for-2014-03-13-Maple-Leafs-3-at-Kings-2.png | FanSided | Shot attempts following the Fenwick model through an NHL hockey game in 2014.
