We provide opportunities for students at all levels in this list (medical student, post doc, college student, and high school students)
We provide elective rotations for medical students, internships, observerships for medical students/international students, post doc researchers, visiting scientists
We offer in person experience on an observership basis. Visiting students will shadow residents and faculty in day-to-day clinical duties. We have unpaid and paid positions, however the paid positions (post doc researchers) are limited slots. Students will be able to take part in the following (but not limited to) sit at the scope during sign out, autopsy/forensic pathology procedures, grossing/surgical pathology, lab medicine, transfusion medicine/blood banking, attend lectures/didactics/grand rounds.
Visiting Students/Observers
The experience varies for the type of experience. Elective medical student rotations last a month. Undergraduate students can come one day or over the course of several months. Paid post doc research positions tend to last up to two years. The experiences we offer can be specially curated for the person's preferences.
For medical student electives, this culminates in course credit. For observers, no certificate is given
12/31/2026
Most of the experiences offer are unpaid
No
We will curate the experience to the person's preference. If they are looking to enter residency, we give them opportunities to know what Pathology residency consists of.

Pathology Survey: This pathology elective is designed for the student who intends to specialize in pathology. The student will spend time in general anatomic pathology which includes autopsy and surgical pathology. They will participate in the performance of autopsies, gross specimen dissection, frozen sections, and microscopic examination with both the resident and staff pathologists. Students are encouraged to participate in the dictation of gross findings. The student will also rotate on the cytology and hematology services. During this time the student will examine gynecological and non-gynecological cytology specimens and observe the performance and interpretation of fine needle aspiration biopsies. On the hematology service they will study peripheral smears and observe the retrieval and microscopic examination of bone marrow aspiration and biopsy specimens. The student may arrange to observe other areas in pathology such as the blood bank, microbiology, or forensics. Throughout the month the student is encouraged to attend and, when appropriate, participate in the daily departmental and the interdepartmental conferences. The student is not required to take night or weekend call on this elective.

Surgical Pathology: This pathology elective is designed for the student who intends to specialize in pathology. Completion of Pathology Survey prior to this course is recommended. The student will function as an extern on the Surgical Pathology Service under the supervision of the surgical pathology faculty. He or she will be given responsibilities in the dissection and histologic study of current surgical specimens. He or she will participate in operating room consultation (frozen sections) and in the surgical pathology teaching conferences. There will be an opportunity for reading and review in the discipline of surgical pathology and for attendance at various Department of Pathology Conferences. Opportunity exists for participation in the autopsy service if the student desires. Throughout the month the student is encouraged to attend and, when appropriate, participate in the daily departmental and the interdepartmental conferences. The student is not required to take night or weekend call on this elective.
