| 8/25/2016 14:46:56 | Adams Free Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Kits | Parent Teacher kits, a group of books, videos/dvds, toys, games, etc. all centered around a theme. | to help parents and teachers with specific topics | There was a need | They were successful as kits in the beginning but are now outdated - and many of these resources can now be found online | We plan to update our kits with new materials and relevant online options
| 8/11/2016 15:18:33 | Amesbury Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | MVLC | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Kits | We circulate storytime kits (puzzles, books, puppets, etc in one bag) and language kits; robots; board games; coding tools; building blocks; Snap Circuits Roku; speakers; telescope; wifi hotspot; | Especially in the children's room there are so many pieces to literacy and learning that we wanted to make sure that everyone had that opportunity to use such resources. Also, patrons love them and it gives kids a new view of libraries: it's not just a place for books! We also wanted to offer patrons electronic resources. | We have been circulating kits since before I came to this library 9 years ago, but have spruced up what we offered. Recently, our director has been particularly interested in nontraditional things (thus our telescope!) and our tech librarian jumped on board with a great items to increase patron online access. I also got an LSTA grant this past year and visited the toy library at Wheelock College which inspired our Blue Explorer bags filled with robots, blocks, puppets, and more that are interfiled in our nonfiction section. | All of our Blue Explorer bags have been highly successful. Interfiling them is a great way to make them visible. Also, our storytime kits are always out (particularly potty training!) Roku and wifi are almost always out. | The telescope is taking a bit to get a buzz about it and some of our electronic resources. Some of our other kits can be used only occasionally. | Yes! a number of departments are thinking about different things and I will certainly be adding more Blue Explorer bags to my collection. | If you need more info, I'm sure my director Erin Matlin would be happy to talk ematlin@amesburylibrary.org or Kim who is in your program! |
| 8/23/2016 9:08:35 | Amesbury Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | MVLC | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | We have a: MaKey MaKey, Google Cardboard, Roku, Kill-A-Watt Energy Meter, Hot Spot, Telescope, Portable DVD Player. We also circulate Book Club Kits, Children's Literacy Kits, Playaway Views for kids, teens, and adults. We are also in the process of putting together "Experience Kits" and "Binge Boxes." | We feel that any way we can help our patrons have access to materials/items is a good thing. Many in our community can't afford to buy a telescope or understand how Roku works; so we are giving them the opportunity to try something new without the financial commitment of purchasing the item. | The Roku, Hot Spot, and telescope have been our most popular. The hot spot has been popular with families and individuals that are traveling but still want to be connected. The Roku has been popular with people who don't have one and want to see what streaming video is like before they purchase one themselves. | Our MaKey MaKey rarely goes out and I suspect that is because we haven't done a good job of explaining what it is to our patrons. The Kill-A-Watt also rarely goes out.
| 8/12/2016 16:59:17 | Athol Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | Telescope, Science kits, Discovery kits, Nature Backpacks, Puppet Story Kits, Toy Story Kits, including Bruins Pucks, Projectors, Overhead Projector, Opaque Projector, Screens. | We have them and there is a demand for these items. | We had an LSTA Grant for many of the kits, the telescope was donated with circulation required, and the AV equipment has always been in demand. | The equipment loan has probably been the most successful. The Science and Discovery Kits have been useful to both public school teachers and homeschoolers. | All have been successful. | We would like to set up some type of Maker Space/Equipment Area with office, craft, and science equipment to loan and also to use in the library (for example, use of our Ellison Die Cut machine, spiral binder, large stapler and papercutter here in the library, plus one or more sewing machines either to use or lend, more Science/Discovery kits in requested areas.
| 9/1/2016 14:01:50 | Athol Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Telescope & Bike Locks | Projectors, headphones, board games. | To give patrons access to these materials. | Staff meeting discussions & our telescope was generously donated to our library. | Projectors go out a lot to different clubs and organizations for use. | Board games. We have not been circulating them long. | I am unaware of what we are planning on circulating | I think that circulating nontraditional materials is fabulous |
| 8/12/2016 9:56:46 | Bancroft Memorial Library Hopedale | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Scientific equipment | Telescope | Telescope was purchased for One Book program about 10 years. At that time a teacher at the high school presented programs for patrons in the evening to talk about the night sky. It was purchased for the public to use and we continue to make it available. | Telescope was purchased for the public to use and we continue to make it available. | We often feature this on our display table, but it seldom goes out. | Not at this time.
| 8/25/2016 15:07:06 | Beaman Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Kits | Launchpads, kits | Patrons love them | we purchased items in support of a STEAM grant, | Launchpads have been wildly successful. Kids love them and they do not have internet access and are very sturdy. | Kill-a-watts, headphones, phone chargers
| 8/24/2016 13:34:27 | Beebe Library | 25,001-50,000 | NOBLE | Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment | Orion Starblast Telescope, thermal detectors, power meters | help patrons monitor and save on energy costs | telescope
| 8/25/2016 15:08:03 | Belding Memorial Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Kits | Paintings by local artists; Kill-o-watt (energy use test) kits | Local woman set up/funded the art collection in honor of her father in the 1990's; Kill-o-watt kits are used for rural energy use monitoring | See above. | The art collection has had more publicity. | We are open to suggestions from town residents
| 8/13/2016 15:44:51 | Bellingham Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment | Wi-Fi hotspots, ukuleles, kilowatt meter, and soon a telescope. | Expand the library's reach. The 6 hotspots are tremendously popular. We just got 3 ukuleles and they are all checked out. | Like to be on cutting edge. Knew the hotspots would be a huge hit. | Hotspot | Kilowatt meter | Board games
| 8/15/2016 9:53:49 | Berkshire Athenaeum: Pittsfield's Public Library | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment, Kits | Take home e-readers; STEAM kits for Children's Library; 1 Projector; laptops; wireless keyboard; Pencil by 53 stylus | To make accessible technology that may not otherwise be available to our patrons, and thereby bridge the digital divide. | Based on community and staff needs. With our tablets, we acquired them as learning and training tools for library staff and eventually graduated them into take home devices for the public. With respect to our Projector, we found that after an upgrade to our library, that we still had a working projector on hand. We decided that it ought to be available for the public, as it was in working order and others may find value in it. | Tablets! Especially our take home Kindles- we believe that people enjoy the apps, movies, books and games that are installed on them, and having continuous access to that content is valuable. | Our stylus; it works best with the Paper app on an iPad, which has a very specific appeal. | We are considering musical instruments, scientific equipment and other items that appear in maker spaces. | n/a |
| 8/25/2016 15:08:30 | Berlin Public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment | Telescope and E-Readers | The telescope was a donation and the e-readers were requested by patrons. | E-Readers so far. We are just starting to circulate the telescope. | Not at this time.
| 8/24/2016 14:06:53 | Bolton Public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | MakeyMakey kits, books with CDs (mostly for kids), electric meters with literature about saving energy | Patron interest | Awareness of their availability and that other libraries are circulating such items. | 1. Electric meters due to energy consciousness; 2. MakeyMakeys due to related STEAM/STEM programming. | We've considered art materials, and outdoor adventure kits for kids.
| 8/11/2016 16:50:53 | Brookline | 50,000-100,000 | MLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment | Coloring books, cake pans, telescope, board games, wifi hotspots | We wanted to make a concerted effort to expand the range of materials we offered, perhaps in the process catching the attention of residents who had not used the library recently. | A new director brought in fresh ideas about the approach to our collections. | The board games and wifi hotspots have been the most successful. They have been most successful because they most decisively address patrons' information and entertainment needs. | The cake pans have been least successful. These are items used only for special occasions, so they tend to sit on the shelf for extended periods of time. | Not at this time. | N/A |
| 8/25/2016 10:54:03 | Brooks Free Library | 10,001-15,000 | CLAMS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Art (primarily paintings), puzzles and games for both adults and children, electronic equip such as Chromebooks, chargers, AV equipment and portable DVD players, Scientific equipment such as microscope and telescope, Out/rec equipment such as bocce and other yard games, themed kits for children that include books, movies, games and other materials all based on a theme (both educational and entertainment oriented) | Our patron appreciate the variety | It started with educational kits for our homeschooling families | Kits because they've been around the longest and get the most PR | The rec/outdoor games are the newest and just after unveiling the collection we had a building issue and had to be closed for two weeks (July 2016- our busiest season when these would have been most popular). | Fall- baking related items such as special pans. | Would love to see compiled results of this survey!! |
| 8/11/2016 12:52:26 | Chelmsford Public Library | 25,001-50,000 | MVLC | Electronic equipment | telescopes, rokus, hotspots, theme kits for kids, kill a watt | telescopes were a gift, kits met a demand in children's, kill a watts were donations, rokus make use of otherwise unused digital editions of films (also so people could try it out), hotspots to help patrons who don't have access to wifi (also so people could try it out.) | see above | telescopes, rokus and hotspots all have waiting lists - people want to try things before they buy them | Kill a watt - I think people don't know about them or what they do. | theme kits for adults ("experience bags")
| 8/12/2016 9:37:18 | Clapp Memorial Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Scientific equipment | kill-a-watt, Makey Makey, Finch robot, telescope, ukulele, preschool kits | Offer additional enrichment opportunities | Makey Makey needs more promotion
| 8/11/2016 13:39:10 | David and Joyce Milne Public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Outdoor/recreational equipment | puppets, games, children's puzzles, children's toys, fishing equipment, geocaching equipment, and a hiking "kit" | For our patrons' fun and enjoyment! | All of it was started before I came to this library, so I don't know what the process was. | The puppets circulate well, as do the games, puzzles and toys. | The fishing, hiking and geocaching kits don't circulate well, but I suspect at least some of that is due to the fact that patrons don't really know about them. | None at this time. | no |
| 8/26/2016 9:25:02 | Dighton Public Library | 1-10,000 | SAILS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | knitting and crochet kits; origami kits; ukelele kit; robotic kits and games; programming kits; microscope kits; cookie cutters; frosting tips; gummy bear mold | We are a very small library who wanted to be a part of the maker movement and making different types of "maker" kits was a way for us to do it. | see above | So far the robotics kits. We are still early into the process and want to keep adding. | So far the cookie cutters, but I expect that is a seasonal thing and will pick up with fall and winter. | Tools, bird watching, we have some other ideas | We were able to get a small start with our Cultural Council grant. |
| 8/15/2016 12:37:58 | Duxbury Free Library | 10,001-15,000 | OCLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits | Bongos, ukuleles (2), banjo, rhythm instrument kit, sewing machine, jigsaw puzzles, kill-a-watt (2), Braille kit, American Sign Language kit, Bird-watching kit, metal stamping kit, calligraphy kit, household toolbox, magnetic (travel) chess, croquet set, Meditation kit, Little Bits, assorted themed cake pans, GoPro, Virtual reality headset, Photography (light reflectors) kit, Sphero, Dungeons & Dragons, Portable DVD player, Rokus (4), Coloring kit, Stop motion filming kit, xylophone, Keva planks, Pickleball, Robotics with cubelets, Makey Makey, bicycle repair, Computer repair, Tidepool kit, Raspberry Pi kit, Scanner, Knitting kit, Polymer clay kit, American dolls (2), American doll clothing - assorted. (And probably a few more I'm forgetting about!) | Most of them come from staff ideas, some from patron requests. We try to keep our eyes on what's trending technology-wise, especially as it pertains to STEM & STEAM education. | We started with about five kits - meditation, bird watching, a ukulele, ASL and Braille were among the first. When we saw that patrons loved them we just kept adding. | Musical instruments, Meditation, the tinkering electronic stuff. We see that kits where people can make things and be creative are the most popular. | The more mundane "fixing" kinds of kits less popular - bicycle repair, computer repair, kill-a-watt. | We are constantly adding "kits". Right now we're working on a projector, more jigsaw puzzles. We keep a list on the circulation office door and just jot down ideas when they come to us. We probably order two or three new items a month and the Children's and Reference come up with ideas and do their own ordering. | Promotion and advertising are key to get the ball rolling with these. And staff excitement. |
| 8/11/2016 14:13:25 | East Bridgewater | 10,001-15,000 | SAILS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment | Oversized games suited for outdoor use (Connect4, Jenga, horseshoes, cornhole, and bocce). Google glasses. Board games, puzzles, and toys. | They are popular with our patrons | upon patron request | board games | toys | STEM-based kits in backpacks
| 8/24/2016 13:22:45 | East Bridgewater Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | SAILS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Children's toys/puzzles/board games; Outdoor games (Connect4, Jenga, Cornhole, Horseshoes, and Bocce); VCR glasses | They are popular with our patroms | Dovetailed nicely with programming | The outdoor games and the children's materials -- perhaps due to the curiosity factor | Surprisingly, the VCR glasses -- we're working on promoting these better | Yes, perhaps adding cake pans
| 8/11/2016 13:55:41 | East Longmeadow Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment | Board games and basic Kindle eReaders | Kindles were to help with high demand titles and the board games is to start a nontraditional collection at the library in the hopes that we will start a monthly game night at the library. | Kindles | We may be adding iPads and different Kindles to our lending collection.
| 8/24/2016 14:07:12 | Edwards Public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | Old fashioned projector, chemistry kits for kids, | There is a need | We were given the projector a while ago, and Mt Holyoke College is collaborating with us on the chemistry kits | Chemistry kits- people rarely need the projector | Projector | Possibly coloring books with pencils | no |
| 8/25/2016 14:57:00 | Fitchburg Public Library | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Scientific equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power) | Original art works and prints, toys, garden tools, telescope (soon), Kill--o-Watt Meters, overhead and opaque projectors. The ukulele because that is popular other places and seemed like a good idea. | The art work because we have had the collection since the mid-1970s and there are several people who use it all the time. The toys because they circulate well. The garden tools are new and are in conjunction with our seed catalog. The Kill-o-Watt meters because Unitil's rates are so high people want to know how to save. The telescope because the Friends bought it for us. The projectors because we have had them forever and not many schools have them any longer. | From programming at other libraries presented at various library conferences. | This has varied over the years. | We would like to add more "stuff." We are considering other types of tools and kitchen gadgets that are not used very often. Fitchburg has a very high poverty rate so we believe that loaning some of these unusual items would help the residents and introduce the library to people who don't know what we can offer them.
| 9/1/2016 18:34:47 | Forbes Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment | Musical instruments and e-readers | So patrons can experience them without an expensive purchase | Ukuleles

People like coming to library to get unusual items. It's great to take try a new board game, take a tablet on a road trip, or use a telescope. These are items that people may not want to purchase themselves, but still want to use. | We started lending materials that we were purchased for programs like board games and Makey Makeys. When people liked checking them out we started expanding our collection. | Our most successful items are the Launchpads. Parents and kids love them and we've recently expanded our collection to the new adult and teen tablets. | Among staff, any of the items that have a large number of pieces to count can be annoying and time consuming. In order to help alleviate this issue we regularly have volunteers count the pieces and make sure everything is accounted for. | Staff really want to circulate American Girl Dolls, but we aren't sure where we would store them or exactly where the funds to pay for them would come from. There has been talk of a Seed Lending Library as well. | When circulating Cards Against Humanity and Superfight with all their expansion packs it was much easier to buy a sturdy case with handle to hold them all. Goldiblox have lots of small pieces but the company was great about sending us replacements when they were lost. Launchpads are awesome but can be damaged. The company is great about replacing tablets with cracked or damaged screens that were purchased within the last year. Additionally with the Launchpads we added an area with the date, staff initials and patron initials so that everyone knows it was checked out in good working condition, in case there are any problems when returned. |
| 8/29/2016 18:20:08 | Granville public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, State Parks Pass | Puppets, State Parks Pass | The puppets circulate & are a draw to some little ones. The State Parks Pass is free to us & we have a State Park in our town. | Seeing what some of our patrons were taking out of local libraries that we could also offer.
| 8/24/2016 13:46:36 | Haston Free Public Library/North Brookfield | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Musical instruments and equipment | Ukuleles | Patron interests, adding something new to our collection | popularity of a Ukulele program held at the library | perhaps | We have just added these to our circulating collection so do not have good feedback yet as to their use
| 8/15/2016 14:11:38 | Hudson Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Cooking supplies | cake pans | we asked our patrons via social media and that was something they wanted | We asked our patrons what they would want and they mentioned cake pans and gardening tools. We chose cake pans as it seemed easier to start with than gardening tools and they are things people often use once but don't need again. Most of our collection was donated by our patrons so it was a low cost collection to start. | not at this time | they do not circulate very well. People seem to really like the idea of it, and really like donating their materials to our collection, but they do not go out. We purchased about 15 and put out a call for donations. We now have over 40.
| 8/24/2016 13:21:50 | J.V. Fletcher Library, Westford, MA. | 15,001-25,000 | MVLC | Electronic equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment | Orion Starblast Telescope, National Grid Kilowatt reader | These items were provided through generous funding by the sponsoring organization | The organizations approached our Library. | Orion Starblast Telescope | None | We are investigating the circulation of Roku devices | Not at this time - Thanks |
| 8/11/2016 16:49:38 | Jacob Edwards Library, Southbridge | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Scientific equipment | Telescope | A grant was awarded to the library with the understanding the telescope would circulate | We are trying our collection fully accessible but we have some library-use-only such as reference, board games etc still that do not circulate. | The only non traditional item available to borrow is the telescope | as above | Not at the moment | - |
| 8/26/2016 7:44:06 | Jacob Edwards Library, Southbridge | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Scientific equipment | Telescope | Donation from Aldrich Astronomical Society | Once we figured out how to present the material in a format suitable for circulating and provide graphical instructions on it use, we were ready to offer the telescope to the public | We only have a telescope | As above | We would like to offer more items to borrow but due to space limitations and involved planning around how to prepare the material for circulation, we are disinclined at this time, as we are chronically short staffed
| 8/11/2016 12:50:19 | Jones Library | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment | guitars, ukuleles, drums, electric keyboards, glockenspiel, kill-o-watt, e-readers, kids games | very musical community, energy consciousness. | we got a donated guitar and decided to try it out. had request for a kill-o-watt.and e-readers were getting popular as overdrive came to us. | e-readers--lots of patrons want to try them out. 6 of ours are pre-loaded with popular books so patrons love them. ALL the musical instruments are popular, too. | kill-o-watt. | not that I know of | would love to circulate cooking/kitchen equipment and small appliances but doubt we have space. Used to circulate sewing patterns which were also popular but when they got used and older we tossed them. |

| 8/11/2016 13:12:13 | Lawrence Library, Pepperell | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Health equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Ukuleles, American Girl dolls, various other instruments (drums, glockenspiel), many kits with books/toys/puzzles, lawn sports (bocce, croquet) Kill-a-Watt meters, metal detector, accessories for Wii, yoga kit, pre-loaded educational tablets for kids ... | We are always looking for new, interesting things to add to our collection, and patrons love being able to check out "weird stuff". | I think we started with the Kill-a-Watts because we want to encourage our patrons to be environmentally responsible, and we just started adding things when we thought of them. We are a library that loves to try new things, and take a chance. | The American Girl dolls have been hugely popular. We have 6 them, they were all donated (in excellent condition) by patrons. We circulate them in a bag with an AG book, and a journal for the patron to tell us about their adventures together. They are expensive toys, so I think parents like to be able to take one home for 3 weeks for free! We like that they tie in to books and movies that we have in the collection, and we love to read the journal entries. The ukuleles are very popular as well. | So far the lawn sports have not circulated a lot. | Always. We don't know yet, but as soon as we think of something good, we'll try to make it happen. | Most of these items are purchased for us by our wonderful Friends of the Library, as our budget is limited. |
| 9/6/2016 15:14:55 | Leominster Public Library | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment | Kill A Watt P3 electricity usage monitor (model P4400.01) | Presentation given at the library on tips to reduce energy consumption and costs
| 8/24/2016 13:22:16 | M.G. Parker Memorial Library | 25,001-50,000 | MVLC | Cooking supplies, Electronic equipment, Adult coloring books | Cake pans, adult coloring books, Launchpads. We are thinking about circulating hotspots | People in our town have expressed interest in them. | See above. | Cake pans - they're so expensive and people generally only use them once. Why buy them when you can borrow them? | They've all been successful. | Yes - hot spots | No |
| 8/24/2016 15:21:25 | Mattapoisett Free Public Library | 1-10,000 | SAILS | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits | Fishing poles, binoculars, STEM backpack kits containing books and equipment, a bookbinding kit, a guitar, cake pans, a sewing machine, Electricity amp meter, early literacy kits, Podcast kit | They complement our traditional collection and add excitement and interest for our patrons. These are useful to our patrons. | Saw it done at other libraries. | fishing poles--we are a coastal community with a seasonal population STEM backpacks--fun for students, their families and caregivers, heavily promoted in the schools to complement the curriculum | sewing machine--it's heavy. bookbinding kit--it fills a very specific need | Promotion is key.
| 8/24/2016 13:22:54 | Medfield Public | 10,001-15,000 | MLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Health equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits | Gardening tools, sewing machine, food dehydrator, metal detectors, puzzles, games, toys, ukuleles, go pro kit, bird watching kit, needle felting kit, laser level, virtual reality goggles, digital calipers, thermal detectors, cake pans | We circulate them based on a community need for them | We surveyed the community for things they would like to borrow from us | Everything has a fairly high circulation rate because they are all items that we purchased based on demand | Small gardening trowels | We will be adding new materials as we get more input from the comunity | For the collection to be successful it really needs a dedicated space to be displayed |
| 8/24/2016 13:34:07 | Memorial Hall Library | 25,001-50,000 | MVLC | Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment | Roku, Ukulele, Telescope | Patron interest | Senior staff discussed and made the decisions | Both the Roku's and the Ukulele's have been popular. We will start the telescopes in September
| 8/11/2016 13:58:23 | Middleboro Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | SAILS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Outdoor/recreational equipment | Puppets, Puppet Theater, Parachute, Teacher Kits, Backpacks (plants, night sky), recreational equipment (lawn darts, bocce, croquet, horseshoes, disc golf, swim fins) | We have been circulating puppets for over 20 years and added a doorway puppet theater this year thinking it would add to patron enjoyment. The Teacher Kits and Backpacks were done as part of a STEAM grant. The recreational equipment was started this year as part of the Summer Reading Program which had to do with exercise. The games have been very successful and haven't been on the shelf much. | I sent out an all regions email to see what other libraries were doing and their procedures. | Puppets, Backpacks and Kits and the Recreational Equipment. The games allow patrons to take something out that they may not want to purchase but use one time for a family party or gathering. | The puppet theater - maybe patrons make up their own theater at home with the puppets they take out. Parachute - not sure why | Not at this time.
| 8/11/2016 12:52:17 | Millis Public Library | 1-10,000 | MLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Health equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits, Lego sets | Too many to list here. Toys, tools, games, and musical instruments. | Patrons appreciate them and use them. And they expand our community's understanding of what a library can be and do. | Considered what interests we could identify in town - big gardening club (so, soil testers), quilting and knitting are big here (so sewing machines and knitting needles), lots of trails and growing interest in a "walkable downtown" (so pedometers), active LEGO club (so LEGO sets). In addition to these, took some strategic risks on other items like metal detectors, ukuleles, and others that were not too expensive, had worked elsewhere, and wouldn't be too much work for us to manage. | Ukuleles, soil testers, stud finders, and sewing machines have been hugely successful. People know what these items are, but tend not to own them, either because they're just a little too niche or just a little too expensive. | Knitting needles and cake pans. Too cheap and too niche. | Constantly. Currently working on a collection of Spanish language games and expanding our collection of tools.
| 8/11/2016 14:42:23 | monson free library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Outdoor/recreational equipment | Outdoor games: bocce ball, ladder ball, bean bag toss. Cake pans. Jigsaw puzzles. Crock pot. We are looking to expand. | try something different. be a total resource center for the community. | Followed other libraries that were doing it successfully. Talked with patrons. | Definitely the outdoor games during the summer! We recently put the cake pans out to a great response! | Jigsaw puzzles. | Yes but not sure yet. We are still evaluating what we have since we started this program in the spring.
| 8/24/2016 13:37:42 | Morrill Memorial Library | 25,001-50,000 | MLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | Rokus, WiFi Hotspots, USB floppy drive, USB CD/DVD drive, knitting needles, crochet hooks, themed kits for kids, kids USB microscopes, coloring books, colored pencils, gel pens, cake pans, candy molds, puzzles | We like to offer things to our patrons that they might want to try before buying, would only need for a short time (and wouldn't be worth buying), or fun items that are special and unique. | It just happened over time as we saw what other libraries were doing. | The Rokus! They are never on the shelf and travel all over the network. They are great try-before-you-buy items, although some patrons like to take them on vacation or just to use our Netflix account. | The candy molds. Patrons don't seem to realize they are there. | Definitely- tech items are really successful, so we'll see what is the next fun thing.
| 8/24/2016 14:14:59 | Morse Institute Library | 25,001-50,000 | MLN | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Scientific equipment | knitting needles; a telescope | patron demand; donation | Discussion led to decision | Telescope has been most popular | Cake pans; kit with binoculars and bird book, etc.
| 8/11/2016 13:37:34 | Nahant Public Library | 1-10,000 | Unaffiliated with any consortium | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power) | Children's educational toys, board games, telescope, play parachute, garden tools | Local interests in gardening, nature, and entertaining children and visiting grandchildren | Formed partnership with astronomical society and local astrophysicist for the telescope; will work with Garden Club in the future on tools | This is new ground for us, so no significant data yet | Heirloom seeds | (In the choices of consortia above, you omitted MassCat, the small library consortium through Mass Library System. We belong to that.)
| 8/11/2016 13:39:04 | Norfolk Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | SAILS | Cooking supplies, Electronic equipment | Bakeware (cake pans, mostly), Mifi hotspots, ereaders | patron needs and wants | Saw the success that other libraries were having with circulating non-convential items | Mifi hotspots, especially for summer vacations | Still too soon to tell with the bakeware
| 8/12/2016 9:16:50 | North Adams Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Scientific equipment, Kits | Telescope, STEM themed multimedia kits | To further educate and entertain our patrons | Received a STEM grant to make such materials available | The astronomy kit is the most successful. I think the novelty of taking a telescope home to use is exciting to our patrons, that and a very active meteor shower viewing year. The biology kit has been popular as well. Both of these kits have been very popular with our families who home school, more so than with individuals and families. | Kits that seem to be more book and DVD oriented, they really like the kits with hands on materials. | Perhaps in the future if another grant is obtained. Our library does not have a budget to buy such items. | Promotion is key, otherwise people will not look or ask about them. We put out all the kits during school vacations, so that people could 'play' with them. |
| 8/31/2016 11:43:46 | North Brookfield Public Library, North Brookfield | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Musical instruments and equipment | 5 Ukuleles | we thought it would be something "unusual" to circulate!! | Our children's librarian gave a short class in how to play.
| 8/24/2016 10:23:13 | Oak Bluffs Public Library | 1-10,000 | CLAMS | Health equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Fishing Poles, "Island" bags, PIYO exercise program, lawn games, beach blankets | To serve the specific needs of our community | We wanted to cater to both the year-round and large summer population. | They've all been great! | beach blankets | We'd love to have a tool and kitchen tool library. | Response has been fantastic! |
| 8/25/2016 16:43:14 | Phinehas S. Newton Library | 1-10,000 | Unaffiliated with any consortium | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Furniture (tables, chairs) | Games, puppets, toys, digital projector, dvd player, blu-ray player, large and smaller projection screen, folding tables, folding chairs, parachute, hula hoops, and telescope | People have asked for them and the toys, games, and puppets were sitting in the children's room and children wanted to take them out so we said, "sure." | It just happened. | The digital projector - it's a good quality machine and people love using it. The puppets have been favorites for years. | The games circulate the least. | We are waiting for patron requests
| 8/11/2016 15:03:33 | Plainville public library | 1-10,000 | SAILS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Karaoke machine, telescope, projector, metal detector, soil testers, killawatt EZ, theme based kits for prek through 6th grade, parenting kits on bullying, allergies and toilet training, etc., ukulele, puppets, floor puzzles for kids. | Puppets puzzles and kits beaches those are basic in children's room for us. We had a survey and picked the top 5 other things to circ people wanted. | Directors decision | Karaoke machine, projector and metal detector. Puppets puzzles and kits on the kids side. | Telescope. | Not sure yet
| 8/11/2016 15:43:42 | Plymouth Public Library | 50,000-100,000 | OCLN | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment | Kits for children (puppets, board games), Roku streaming players, Launchpad tablets | Why not? | Rokus - we saw an article in a library journal a few years ago, and decided to try it. It has been extremely successful. Launchpads - we saw the booth at ALA. | Rokus - people like that there are new movies on there that you can't stream from anyone else without renting or buying. | The games for kids - I don't think we publicize them enough. Or maybe people just don't want them? | Not at this time.
| 8/11/2016 14:27:10 | Reading Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | NOBLE | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits, office type equipment | laminator, a roomba, telescope, binoculars, bocce ball set, checkers, zoomy microscope, roku, a dlp projector, graphing calculator, tumbling tower, label maker, an external cd/dvd drive, makey makeys, keva planks, magnatiles, snapcircuits | We circulate items that we believe the public would enjoy using, sometimes on a limited basis or to see if it is something they would like to purchase themselves, for instance a roomba or if there is a presentation and the dlp projector would be needed. | We formed a group with the set goal of lending different material, it was enthusiastic from the beginning | The roomba has been by far the most successful item, followed by the magnatiles. | The graphing calculator and the soil testing kit | We are considering purchasing some mobile hotspots and some musical instruments | Check with your community to see what they want and go from there, you have nothing to lose! |
| 8/24/2016 15:36:13 | Richard Sugden Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Electronic equipment, Kits, Telescope | Telescope, Kilowatt meter, STEAM kits for families | Grants, public interest | Approached by Alden about telescope | Telescope and kits | Kilowatt meter | Yes - will do a community survey to determine
| 8/24/2016 13:47:24 | Rockland Memorial Library | 15,001-25,000 | OCLN | Electronic equipment, Kits, Audio Players | Electronic: Type-Right, an interactive typing tutor typewriter Kits: Juvenile story kits with various themes & parts Other: Audio Players for cassetts and CDs | We received patron requests for audio players; teacher, child care & homeschool parents wanted additional resources like the kits; other patrons wanted to learn keyboarding. | Repeated requests for the above items. | Audio Players are most successful. | Interest has waned for the keyboarding tutor. | Not at this time due to space & budget limitations. | It bothers me that liability concerns do not seem to be part of the general discussion regarding circulating nontraditional materials. Power tools, outdoor recreational items, etc., would need written waivers (approved by town laywers) for use. |
| 8/24/2016 14:22:02 | Rowley Public Library | 1-10,000 | MVLC | Electronic equipment, Kits | Wifi hotspots ; discovery kits | So that people without internet at home (or on vacation) can have wifi ; for homeschoolers & lifelong learners to have a curriculum in a box | others in our consortium have, a vendor reached out with a good deal, the board of trustees thought it was a great idea ; had an LSTA grant | the hotspots have been very popular in the few months we have had them | The discovery kits are underused. Maybe people don't know about them or don't want to be responsible for keeping so many items together. | Possibly other gadget-y type things like GPS
| 8/12/2016 14:56:05 | Shrewsbury Public Library | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits | garden tools, kitchen tools, telescope, table top games, various themed kits for children, hotspot devices and ereaders and other devices | becuase our patrons want and appreciate them | Read about a tool library in library literature | board games, kitchen and garden tools, because patrons dont need to own them, just use them periodically | telescope, but those who do borrow it, appreciate it very much. Very big and bulky, so borrowers might find it hard to borrow | more types of tools and games, because they have been so popular.
| 8/25/2016 14:19:03 | Shrewsbury Public LIbrary | 25,001-50,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Health equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Kits | Art prints, garden tools, kitchen gadgets, board games, puzzles, toys, puppets, wifi hotspots, telescope, e-readers, reader for low vision. | To be innovative, patron interest, looking outside the box, patron needs | board games very successful, tools, art prints, e-readers at beginning | kitchen gadgets--need to do more advertising | Just added wifi hotspots but have not circulated yet due to move.
| 8/24/2016 14:48:50 | South Hadley Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Outdoor/recreational equipment | Birdwatching kit (carry bag, binoculars, birding ID book) | Local interest in natural wildlife near the Connecticut River | Patrons kept asking questions about the scene outside the windows of our new library
| 8/24/2016 13:28:06 | Southworth Library, Dartmouth MA | 25,001-50,000 | SAILS | Electronic equipment | Wifi Hotspots | To provide Internet access to people who don't have it at home or who may be traveling, or may need a device for a group meeting. | Heard about other libraries circulating Hotspots at a SAILS Library Showcase & was contacted by sales representative from T-Mobile. | The Hotspots have been very popular and have waiting lists. People want to borrow them for the reasons listed above. | Considering offering Verizon Hotspots to provide better coverage.
| 8/11/2016 13:21:53 | Sutton Free Public Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Musical instruments and equipment, Scientific equipment, Seeds | Ukuleles, Telescope, seeds | Because we want to offer something that patrons might not necessarily purchase for themselves (in the case of the ukuleles and telescope). In the case of the seeds we want to do our part for the good of the community and planet by encouraging seed saving. All the seeds that we offer are open pollinated heirloom seeds. | The telescope we were approached. I don't remember why we got ukuleles. Seeds seemed like a project we could handle- doesn't take much space, didn't cost much money, generates goodwill. | The seeds probably although they are a 'sleeper' item because patrons can come in and take them and we don't know until we check the log. | It's hard to publicize the telescope | we'd like to get soil testers and maybe some other things to complement the seed lending library. Our biggest concern is space, followed closely by budget.
| 8/16/2016 11:36:20 | Thayer Memorial Library | 1-10,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Kits | Telescope, PC/ Console games, GPS, Killawatt, Kindles | I think borrowing things you you use infrequently is more attractive the buying them. | I think borrowing things you you use infrequently is more attractive the buying them. | PC/ Console games - they frequently have a narrative of some sort associated with them. They are more like books and movies than other things. | Everything else | Not sure. | Marketing is the key to success. I don't have nearly enough marketing resources. |
| 8/11/2016 14:00:21 | Wareham Free Library | 15,001-25,000 | SAILS | Outdoor/recreational equipment | Fishing Poles | We received a grant from the proceeds of a local Fishing Tournamnet | Success was due to partnership with a local Bait & Tackle Shop that will re-tune our equipment , free, at the beginning of the season and advise borrowers
| 8/24/2016 14:38:28 | Wayland Free Public | 10,001-15,000 | MLN | Electronic equipment, Book Club in a Bag | 2 Verizon 4G hotspots, and external DVD drive | demand | demand | Hotspot (and in house Chromebooks) | in house iPads | considering | loaning/reserving the hotspots has not yet been resolved happily! |
| 8/26/2016 9:06:18 | Webster Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Scientific equipment | Games, Telescope | Donations | Donated specifically to lend. | Games for children. | Telescope. | Tools, Gardening Equipment

Children's librarian gave ukulele lessons, juv launchpads kept near kid computers, they caught on, puzzles for adults are circulating regularly. | Cakepans, probably because no one knows library has them and they are not displayed prominently. | Yes, but still exploring ideas. Want to see how current new materials are circulating. | Figure out what works for your community, remember to build in costs of bags and other packaging when figuring out costs. |
| 8/25/2016 10:47:33 | West Bridgewater | 1-10,000 | SAILS | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Kits | Hot Spots, Cake Pans, Ukuleles, guitar, puppets, children's kits/w books, etc | Public interest | Musical instruments - gives patrons a chance to try before they buy. | all have done fairly well
| 8/11/2016 15:09:53 | West Tisury Free Public Library | 1-10,000 | CLAMS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Musical instruments and equipment, Electronic equipment, Kits | violin, guitar, mandolins, ukulele, kindles and other ereaders, energy kit | Our patrons love being able to use these materials | It was suggested as an idea (instruments); I wanted patrons to have a chance to try out an ereader before purchasing one (and to increase ematerial circulation) | Instruments (very!) and ereaders | energy kit | hot spots; rokus
| 8/11/2016 16:01:56 | Westborough Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Electronic equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Coloring book kits for adults (coloring book & colored pencils), wi-fi hotspots, 1 telescope, outdoor games (bocce, croquet, horseshoes, cornhole, bowling, ring toss), giant games (giant dice, dominoes & jenga), geocaching kit (handheld GPS with Geocaching for Dummies book) | Our long range plan calls for fostering the recreational and informational needs of our residents, so all of these items fit that direction. | Mostly by seeing things at other libraries. We heard about wi-fi hotspots at NELA and telescopes at MLA and decided to give both a try. | Wi-fi hotspots! They are always checked out. We started with 5 and added 5 more. People love being able to use them on trips in the car, and new residents are thrilled to discover them while they wait for Verizon or Comcast to hook up their home internet. | The outdoor games for kids - they have been sitting on the shelf. They're not shelved in the Children's Room, but are with our other outdoor games, so that could be why they're not moving. | Not right now, but if we see a great idea at your presentation we might! | Thanks for asking! Looking forward to hearing the results. |
| 8/25/2016 14:41:44 | Westborough Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Art and arts and crafts supplies, Electronic equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | outdoor games, mobile hotspots, coloring book/colored pencil kits, laptop computers (in library only), ereaders (nobody checks these out), and soon a telescope and a geocaching kit | It was thought that people would want to borrow them instead of purchasing | mobile hotspots | Ereaders were hugely unsuccessful. Games don't seem to be circulating much
| 8/24/2016 14:39:36 | Weston Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | MLN | Electronic equipment, Tools (ex. garden, household, or power), Telescope | Telescope, laptops, gadget to check the wattage/energy usage | respond to patron interest/demand | The telescope is the most popular. The laptops are used time to time, especially if a group is presenting in our event room.
| 8/11/2016 15:34:32 | Whitinsville Social Library | 15,001-25,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Kits | Board games, record player, STEAM Kits (could be included in your Games category) | #1 reason is because we have space for this as well as the books we want to lend. Record player because we have records. The other stuff because we can. | Once you lend e-readers, other types of stuff just seems to be easy enough to lend. | Record player. Novelty. | Hard to say. Board games too new. | Sure. Outdoor kits & tools next year. Tools were requested by a patron, but I need a fairly low cost way to obtain them. | I considered cake pans but 2 libraries very near by already have these and my residents can drive if they want to borrow. |
| 8/24/2016 13:13:06 | Whitman Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | OCLN | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Kits | American girl dolls and clothing/ accessories, cake pans, STEAM kits, Rokus, Wireless Hot Spots. | We see ourselves as not a repository of information, but also a hub for resource sharing. Materials that promote the engagement of our patrons in the appreciation of and participation in cultural, civic, educational activities are part of our mission. | Based upon an evaluation of the needs of the community. | Wireless hot spots are most successful with adults and teens. STEAM kits are wildly successful with younger users. Other items are new to the collection. | Our rokus are not as successful as anticipated.
| 8/24/2016 13:20:17 | Whitman Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | OCLN | Cooking supplies, Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Kits | We circulate cooking supplies, Rokus, internet hotspots and a couple of American Girl dolls with accompanying clothes, pets, etc. | There are many people in our community who do not have the internet or Roku boxes so we wanted to start making these available. We had seen that other libraries were circulation cooking materials and that was an easy decision to make. We were able by accident to acquire some American Girl dolls that normally we could not afford. One actually has a wheelchair and the kids who have experience with these love her. | Just the realization that we need to appeal to our community in many different ways beyond books. | They are ALL a big hit and have waiting lists--we need more. | N/A | Not sure yet--seems worth pursuing
| 8/25/2016 15:01:55 | Wilbraham Public Library | 10,001-15,000 | C/W MARS | Games, puppets, puzzles, and toys, Electronic equipment, Scientific equipment, Outdoor/recreational equipment, Kits | Games, puppets, Children's kits based on themes, Children's chemistry kits, Book Club Kits, Grab Bag Kits with 5-6 books based on a theme, parachute, frisbee golf, sony ereader, audio cable, launchpads | Purchased to fulfill our goal to provide various kinds of kits or materials that relate to reading or had been requested by patrons. | Children's kits, launchpads and adult Book Club book bags. | sony ereaders, frisbee golf

| 8/12/2016 12:16:58 | Winchester Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | MLN | Electronic equipment | Kill-a-Watt meters, RoKu, Hot Spots | Interest from the community as well as introducing them to new technologies | Minimal staff involvement, cost and ongoing costs | Too early to know | There are many service providers for hot spots, don't pick the obvious choice, do some research.
| 8/24/2016 14:28:43 | Winchester Public Library | 15,001-25,000 | MLN | Electronic equipment | Chromebooks & Rokus | Chromebooks are in library use only for 3 hours (renewable). Rokus are 7 day loans (renewable). | The public Internet computer area can be fairly noisy as it is near a service desk and some patrons were looking for quieter places with public computers. Lending Chromebooks gives them the freedom to move about the building to find a better work environment. The Rokus were both in response to their popularity at nearby libraries and patron requests. | All of this items have been added in the last 3 months. So far Rokus are the most popular by a slight margin. | By default, the Chromebooks are the least successful, but they are still going out at least once a week during the slow summer months. | Mobile hotspot lending will begin in September. We are considering a seed library as I have run one previously.
