@bschne: Henrich's "The Secret of Our Success" is pretty sprawling but has some great passages on how culture and the technological inventions it brings about can give humans new mental toolkits that then allow them to think differently even without having said inventions at hand. (One of the go-to examples is how, once the abacus is invented, you can then visualize one and use it as a mental tool even if you don't have one at hand)
