Foundroothttps://foundroot.com/907-314-2014info @ foundroot.comFOUNDROOT IS A SMALL FAMILY BUSINESS OWNED AND OPERATED BY ALASKAN FARMERS. WE SELL RESILIENT SEEDS AND GOODS ROOTED IN NORTHERN VALUESFoundroot is a small family business owned and operated by husband and wife team, Nick and Leah in Haines, Alaska. We only sell very high quality open-pollinated seeds proven for northern gardens. No gmo's, no hybrids, and most of our catalog is heirlooms but there are new breeds of open-pollinated seeds being developed all the time.

Any seeds that are not grown by us are sourced from other farms and ethical companies in the USA that align with our values. Due to the loss of our main farm field in 2021, we are growing a very small portion of our catalog at this time. We rigorously test our seeds and guarantee high germination standards. We have operated as a seasonal online retailer for 10 years, sending seeds to over 70 different Alaskan communities and throughout the Lower 48.

It is important to us that our customers know they can rely on us to help feed themselves and their families. Our goal is to empower more people to grow their own food, no matter the scale, and support systems of self-reliance and food sovereignty for northern communities.

In 2015 we moved to Haines, AK from Southcentral Alaska due to its favorable microclimate. We purchased a small plot of land and camped out for two summers while we cleared trees, cut a 1/4 acre garden, built a yurt as our year-round residence and began cutting ground on a farm field at on old homestead a block down the road. In 2018, we got our farm operational and were able to start growing seeds on a commercial scale. This is a slow and challenging process in our climate. We are focused on breeding out the more rare and difficult to grow vegetables for our region such as early ripening tomatoes, mold resistant beans, and slow bolting spinach.

In addition to growing seeds, our one acre market garden filled a dire need for more fresh food in our community. We grew vegetables, flowers, fruit, and herbs that we retailed locally in Haines, feeding 50+ families per week and we partnered with like-minded restaurants and retailers in Haines and with weekly shipments to Juneau.

Unfortunately in 2021, our landlords wouldn't allow us to grow on the land that we had spent the last five years developing our farm on. It was clear that this was not a safe and stable situation to build our business on and we had to abandon years of work and the land that we had poured hundred of hours of sweat equity into. We are in the process of securing new land to restart our farm and continue this work.

When you shop with us, you are supporting these efforts: the restarting of our farm, the future of a more localized northern food system, and the deep food security of regional seed banking.

We are just getting started and are so very grateful for your support

Tasteful Gardenhttps://www.tastefulgarden.com678-818-9154mail@tastefulgarden.comWhen you order from The Tasteful Garden, we provide healthy, happy plants ready to go into your garden, all organically grown. There is lots of help along the way with a website full of growing tips and informationWe hope everyone enjoyed a delicious harvest this year! Here in Alabama we are getting excited about planning for Spring planting. The Tasteful Garden went through a big transition in 2022 as we moved the nursery business to our farm. We built new greenhouses, rebuilt the website and adjusted to changes that have affected everyone these days. We scaled back to "where it all began" over 20 years ago with founder Cindy Martin's original vision of growing culinary garden plants to share with avid home gardeners of all experience levels. Our other farm operations include Goats, Chickens and Ducks as well as produce so there is always something exciting happening!

Some changes you will find on our websiteMixed Cherry Tomatoes 2022 include more Dwarf Tomato varieties! These plants have been developed the old-fashioned way, selecting for flavor, texture and fruit production. They are perfect for smaller growing spaces or containers and we have terrific small, medium and large-fruited plants to choose from. All of our Dwarf plants are Indeterminate so they continue to produce all season but will only grow two to four feet tall. For 2023 we no longer offer Seeds, Eggplant or some of the more common varieties of Tomatoes and Peppers. These changes will allow us to dedicate more greenhouse space to the unusual plants that you simply cannot find in your local garden centers.

Shipping costs have continued to escalate and we saw a dramatic increase this year. Please know that we do not add handling or packing fees, the shipping price you see when you checkout comes directly from the shipper's website. At this time we are still offering both UPS and FedEx so our customers have a choice in service. We have been able to maintain our plant prices for the third year in a row now, a real challenge these days.

All in all the future of home gardening is brighter than ever! One thing is for sure: here at The Tasteful Garden we look forward to successful gardening with you in the New Year.

Native Seedshttps://www.nativeseeds.org/520-622-0830info@nativeseeds.orgNative Seeds/SEARCH seeks to find, protect and preserve the seeds of the people of the Greater Southwest so that these arid adapted crops may benefit all peoples and nourish a changing world..Our story began in 1983 when co-founders Barney Burns, Mahina Drees, Gary Nabhan and Karen Reichhardt worked on a food security Meals for Millions project to support the Tohono O’odham Nation in establishing gardens for their sustainable food needs. Over many generations, the forces of colonization and later globalization had eroded the cultures and economies and that kept these vital foods alive in the landscape. In discussions with tribal elders they were told “What we are really looking for are the seeds for the foods our grandparents used to grow.” This sage remark inspired the formation of Native Seeds/SEARCH as a collector and preserver of endangered traditional seeds from communities in the Southwest.

Since its founding, Native Seeds/SEARCH has been dedicated to conserving the rich agro-biodiversity of the arid Southwest. Preserved in our seed bank today are nearly 2,000 varieties of crops adapted to arid landscapes extending from southern Colorado to central Mexico, many of them rare or endangered. The collection represents the cultural heritage and farming knowledge of over 50 indigenous communities, as well as recent immigrants like Spanish missionaries and Mormon homesteaders. We also conserve a number of crop wild relatives, wild ancestors of domesticated plants.

These seeds, and the knowledge of how to grow them, represent sophisticated adaptations to the challenges of farming in the desert, adaptations that continue to be relevant to sustainable ecosystems of the future. Each growing season we regenerate a portion of the collection at different sites: our Conservation Center gardens in Tucson and in partnership with numerous regional small farmers. We return some seeds to long-term cold storage, and distribute the surplus through our annual seedlisting and online. Currently we offer over 500 varieties from the NS/S collection alongside Native fine art and crafts, gifts, heirloom Southwest foods, and more. All proceeds support our nonprofit mission and enable us to distribute seeds for free to Native American families and community gardens. In addition we are substantially supported by individual donations, memberships, and foundation grants.

The resilience of our food systems depends on agricultural biodiversity, as farmers and plant breeders can draw on the myriad genetic combinations as raw materials to develop new varieties better adapted to an uncertain and changing environment. Climate change, water scarcity, new and more virulent crop pests and diseases — all of these troubling trends currently threatening our food security require a wide pool of genetic diversity to prevent catastrophic crop failure and famine. Thirty-six years on from our founding, our priority today is no longer in collecting rare seeds, but in exploring the rich and varied potential of these plants to provide nutrition and livelihoods to today’s farmers, gardeners, and consumers. While continuing to preserve our collection, NS/S also provides high quality training in seed saving and farming techniques to empower communities to use and conserve this treasure themselves.

Humble Beginnings in 1976
Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply originated in 1976 on tiny Peaceful Valley Road in Nevada City, California. Nearly 50 years later we are proud to call the beautiful Sierra Foothills our home.

The business started in a small garage sending out a four-page newsletter to growers. As the operations expanded, we moved down Peaceful Valley Road where we leased a few acres and a smal 12' x 20' shed. Since the business was in a rural area, we were able to have a greenhouse and grow nursery plants to sell to local customers.

We Grow As Organic Farming & Gardening Grows
In 1985, the first year a complete catalog was published, Peaceful Valley burned down and many of the records, information and inventory were lost. A larger building was then rebuilt, mainly through the help of our friends and dedicated customers. When the business started to grow in popularity, the tiny, private Peaceful Valley Road got so congested that Peaceful Valley Farm & Garden Supply employees had to meet customers at the end of the road, 1/4 mile away, to help alleviate the volume of traffic.

Since the 1980s, Peaceful Valley moved several times within Nevada County to accommodate business growth under the ownership and leadership of Amigo Bob Cantisano, Mark & Kathleen Fenton, and Eric & Pattie Boudier.

We moved into our current location at 125 Clydesdale Court in 2005, converting a former Budweiser distribution facility to our warehouse, store, nursery and office space.

Bill & Jill Hageman acquired Peaceful Valley in 2020 building on a proud legacy of family ownership.

In 2022, we opened our second location in Albany, Oregon. Located in the heart of the Willamette Valley this facility serves as a retail garden center as well as our regional hub for farmer and commercial customers in the Pacific Northwest.

We enjoy educating new gardeners, helping new farms begin their journey and look forward to celebrating the first 50 years of Peaceful Valley in 2026.

Since 1990, we have personally grown, and harvested all of our heirloom tomato seeds, by hand, to ensure you the finest quality, true-to-type, tomato seeds. No hybrids. No GMOs. "Every Seed A Possibility."An advocate of sustainable agriculture, Gary Ibsen has given talks about growing tomatoes for the University of California, regional garden clubs and has made several presentations on the nationally syndicated television show, P. Allen Smith's Gardens. Gary was also Founder, Publisher and Editorial Director of the award-winning Adventures In Dining magazine and prior to that, Monterey Life magazine. Gary is also author of The Great Tomato Book, which was nominated by the International Association of Culinary Professionals for best cookbook in the single subject category. In the 80s, Gary served on the Founding Board of The American Institute of Wine & Food.
Dagma Lacey
Dagma Lacey
Gary is a respected leader in the tomato industry due to his knowledge through growing and harvesting organic heirloom tomato varieties for more than 40 years. In the mid 90s, Gary, through his TomatoFest Farm, supplied heirloom tomatoes to restaurants and markets in Central California.
Gary Ibsen was the Founder and Executive Director of the Carmel TomatoFest event that took place in Carmel, California (1997-2008). This event attracted tomato lovers from around the world. National publicity of this annual event supported the resurgence in popularity of organic heirloom tomatoes.
Dagma Lacey is also a respected advocate of organic gardening and is cofounder and CEO and CFO of TomatoFest. She brings with her a strong sense of community, emphasizing that only together can we regain appreciation for a fruit that has been integral to so many cuisines. This passion was passed down from her maternal ancestors, Bohemian farmers who instilled in her a reverence for people who worked the land for sustenance and health.

By the time Dagma had met Gary, he had already founded the annual TomatoFest and had just published The Great Tomato Book. While holding down two jobs in Spokane, Washington, the single mother of five children courted Ibsen long-distance for six years. When her children left home as adults, Dagma relocated to California, where her reputation as a farmer of heirloom tomatoes was on the rise. The two married in 2006.

Dagma has since been interviewed for TV, radio, and print about her knowledge of sustainable farming. Her community-minded approach has led to her hosting grade-school gardening demonstrations and tomato tastings for Whole Foods Markets. She supports the well-being and distribution of 650 varieties of certified organic tomatoes through her hands-on efforts, which include everything from the annual planting and harvesting of tomato seeds, to fruit photography and organic certification administration.

Gary and Dagma are currently active in supporting numerous urban, school and community garden programs world-wide through TomatoFest Seed Donations Program, in their effort to support bio-diversity, ensure that heirloom tomato varieties will be preserved, and to feed those in need.

Gary and Dagma are Co-Founders of the World Tomato Society a global community committed to cultivating, discovering, sharing, educating and preserving all things tomato.

Together they enjoy their eight children and nine grandchildren.

San Diego Seed Companyhttps://sandiegoseedcompany.com/858-203-127info@sandiegoseedcompany.comLocal seeds play a critical role in expanding sustainable agriculture. By producing local seeds of food crops that adapt to local growing conditions, we perpetuate sustainable and regenerative agriculture goals. How? These crops are more resistant to local plant diseases and pests. They are also better adapted to the environmental conditions and soil structure in that specific area.

For growers in Southern California facing drought conditions and changing weather patterns, this is more important than ever. The seeds that we grow in Southern California and the American Southwest should be adapted to our region's unique climate conditions.

Our mission is to provide Southern California and the American Southwest with organic local seeds that have been acclimated to the range of microclimates we have so that growers can be as successful as possible. We believe in sustainable growing practices, seed saving, and healthy, local food systems. San Diego Seed Company works with a wide range of non-profit organizations and community gardens to encourage these sustainable practices. We also support those who are gardening in San Diego, Southern California, and the American Southwest with the knowledge they need to be successful. This knowledge is offered via our Garden Wisdom Blog, our online courses, as well as our YouTube channel, Instagram and Facebook pages.

As organic gardeners ourselves, we wanted to make organic gardening accessible by providing easy-to-follow organic gardening advice and an ever-expanding selection of organic varieties. We were early signers of the Safe Seed Pledge which states "...we do not knowingly buy, sell, or trade genetically-engineered seeds or plants" and our seeds are tested by the Non-GMO Verified Project which looks for genetically engineered (GMO) contamination in seeds that can occur when plants cross-pollinate. Our seeds are not treated, and our packets never contain fillers—just high-quality seeds you can count on.

We've got only one planet Earth, and as organic gardeners we are always looking for products and gardening methods that keep that in mind. From our recycled and biodegradable paper pots to our sustainably harvested garden stakes, and BPA-free sprouter, all are made responsibly in the USA.

Neseedhttps://www.neseed.com/(800) 825-5477info@neseed.comWe offer conventional, organic, heirloom and hybrid seeds for professional and home garden growers of any size. We have signed the Safe Seed Pledge and most of our varieties are available as untreated seed. Let us be your quality farm, greenhouse and garden seed provider.About Our Commercial Seed Company
In 1987, long time friends, Ted Willard and Dennis McGlynn decided to put their agricultural and sales expertise together and go into the seed company business for themselves. Their goal was to create a line of high quality, chemical-free seed products at a reasonable price. Since then, NE Seed has provided commercial growers and home gardeners with the vegetable, flower, and herb seed varieties they need at the farm and at the table. Conventional, Organic, Heirloom and Hybrid seed varieties are carefully chosen and tested for quality before they can carry the NE Seed label.

Commercial Growers buy Seeds from us to satisfy the selection, yield and quality they are looking for.
In 2007, after 20 years in business for both companies, NE Seed and D. Palmer Seed merged. The result of this merger created NE Seed’s sister company DP Seeds LLC. DP Seeds LLC. is a commercial hybrid vegetable seed company dedicated to providing seeds of the highest quality to commercial vegetable growers worldwide. Their close relationships with independent breeders enables them to offer dependable, proven hybrid seeds with features such as such as improved disease resistance, increased uniformity and higher yields.

NE Seed offers the vegetable, flower & herb seed varieties consumers expect from a quality seed company.
This merger has given both companies added strength in the market and provides us the capabilities to directly ask our breeders to add market specific varieties. We are dedicated to bringing you products that our growers and independent breeders have as their vision, not ours. NE Seed will continue to market and be the liaison between you the grower and our breeding partners. You can find DP Seeds vegetable seed varieties right in our printed catalog and on neseed.com. Commercial growers and seed distributors can find DP Seeds LLC. current and upcoming varieties on www.dpseeds.com.

Most DP Seeds varieties have No Organic Equivalent and are available as Untreated seeds for many organic programs.
In addition to the fine vegetable, herb and flower seeds available through our online catalog, NE Seed offers a full line of premium grass seed, field and forage mixtures , growing supplies and wildlife food plot mixes. For more information call: 1 (800) 783-7891

NE Seed is proud to be a NO-GMO Seed Company.
The Safe Seed Pledge
Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative,

We pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants.
The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms, poses great biological risks as well as economic, political, and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately people and communities.

Sharon’s Natural Gardenshttps://sharonsnaturalgardens.com/302-846-2571sharon@sharonsnaturalgardens.comWe have farmed our land in Delaware over the last 40 years using both organic and biodynamic gardening methods without any pesticides or commercial chicken manure. When I was a child, I followed my Swiss immigrant grandmother around while she taught me about skills like using a scythe, making sauerkraut, her own clothes, yodeling, butchering animals, and telling stories from the Old Country. I was always drawn to saving seed and using plants for healing. It is my belief that the healthiest food is grown fresh in the garden using only organic and biodynamic gardening methods. Most importantly, we create our own biodynamic compost using our horses manure. In addition, we use seaweed, rock powders, do soil testing, and plant cover crops.

Tomato Growers Supply Companyhttp://www.tomatogrowers.com/(239) 768-1119customerservice@tomatogrowers.comGlitter was developed by the same breeder that created Juliet tomato. However the fruit color is a brilliant shimmering orange. Attractive trusses cascade from the plant and the vigorous indeterminate vines boast excellent productivity. With an average brix of 9% you can expect to enjoy natural sweetness that elevates this tomato to the top end of grape and cherry tomatoes. The one ounce fruit will likely be consumed before you have a chance to take them inside the house. Vines reach 5 to 6 feet and require staking. 70 days.We have certainly been on an unexpected journey for the last two
years with Covid and broken supply chains. At the end of September 2022, Hurricane Ian destroyed thousands of homes and businesses across Florida where we are located. We are incredibly fortunate to have not suffered any loss to property and life, and we extend our able hands to our neighbors in need.

We have attempted to do our best to continue to offer the seed that you need. A few items have been out of stock based on supplier issues. But we are striving to do all that we can to provide the best gardening experience possible, even with the challenges we are facing. We continue to add new products that we think will help your garden thrive.

Many of the items we are adding are already very popular among home gardeners. Athena hybrid melon has been one of the best selling musk melons for years, both in home gardening and in commercial sales. Pink Delicious hybrid tomato is a new All-America Selections winner with great flavor and many accolades. DePurple hybrid cauliflower is a new replacement for Graffiti hybrid, boasting a larger head, and earlier maturity in the purple cauliflower category. We have added tomatoes Darkstar Hybrid with Late Blight resistance, early maturing Polebig hybrid, Andiamo hybrid and Solar Flare, just to name a few. Please take
some time to review the Plus series tomatoes - these are very popular hybrid tomatoes with added new disease resistance: Celebrity Plus, Big Beef Plus, Lemon Boy Plus, and Better Boy Plus.

You can see the rest of our varieties for this year on our New for 2023 Collection page.

Thank you for your continued support over the last 39 years. Best
wishes to you and your family in the coming season.

Our company specializes in the seeds of Türkiye, especially the seeds that originated, bred, stewarded, and passed down many generations in Anatolia (also known as Asia Minor). Since Fall 2019, we also have been growing and offering the seeds of the region currently known as Appalachia.

All of our seeds are open-pollinated. None of our seeds are treated or patented.

We farmed on borrowed land in Tampa, FL, from 2013-2015 and on leased land in Thonotosassa, FL, from 2015-2018, both on Seminole land. In 2018, we moved to beautiful West Virginia, and since April 2019, our farm has been located in Reedsville, WV, on Seneca and Shawnee peoples’ land. We grow a majority of our seed stock on our seed restoration, preservation and propagation farm, and since 2019, we have been collaborating with other seed growers in West Virginia and other states to have stock seed grown for our catalog.

We are small farmers, and in the past, we attended farmers’ markets to sell produce. Between 2013 and 2018, we also collaborated with Chef Gregory Seymour of Pizzeria Gregario to explore the flavor dimensions of the produce we grew from our seeds. Providing produce to a family-owned restaurant helped us understand and connect with the seeds we grow better.

South Georgia Seed Companyhttps://stores.southgaseedco.com/208-996-3531The Smoky Mountain Heirloom Seed Collection 100% Non GMO Open Pollinated Seeds We are an off grid, solar powered heirloom seed farm. Our family of four strives to live as simple as possible. We compost, use worm castings, utilize clean solar energy for watering, and raise livestock in order to use their waste as a fertilizer. We are working towards trying to live off the land as much as possible and at the same time we are trying to make a positive impact our environment and our neighbors. We are in the process of adding more indigenous plants to our small farm in hopes of better managing the land while benefiting various plants and animals around us.

We were originally founded along the river bottom land of Southwest GA, but we are now located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North GA. We are not a corporate company in anyway; we are simply a small family owned husband and wife Christian business. We don't carry thousands of varieties, but the ones we do carry are some of the best and most loved heirloom varieties on the market today. We are also working diligently to grow some of the more rare varieties in hopes of bringing them back into circulation. We also work with other Non GMO growers in order to obtain varieties we don't have the space to grow.

Everything done on our small farm is done by hand whether its packaging, planting, watering, tilling, or shipping. We try to relate to our customers by being gardeners and growers ourselves. We, much like you, share in the excitement and sometimes disappointment that comes with gardening. We truly enjoy what we do and try to treat all our customers as we would want to be treated. We only sell Non-GMO Open Pollinated Heirloom Seeds and we would love the opportunity to gain you as a customer. We truly appreciate your business!

We have signed The Safe Seed Pledge.

safe-seed-pledge.jpg

"Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. The mechanical transfer of genetic material outside of natural reproductive methods and between genera, families or kingdoms poses great biological risks, as well as economic, political and cultural threats. We feel that genetically engineered varieties have been insufficiently tested prior to public release. More research and testing is necessary to further assess the potential risks of genetically engineered seeds. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities."

Seed Savers Exchange https://www.seedsavers.org/563-382-5990customerservice@seedsavers.orgSince 1975, we have grown, saved, and shared heirloom seeds and led a movement to protect biodiversity and preserve heirloom varieties. At the heart of our organization is a seed bank that houses a collection of 20,000+ rare, open-pollinated varieties. With gardeners like you, we can get these seeds where they belong—in gardens and on tables everywhere, for generations to come.

When seeds are in our bank, they are protected. When seeds are growing in your garden, they thrive.

Thank you for growing with us.
We hear this comment time and again from members, supporters, and visitors to our bucolic, off-the-beaten-path, 890-acre Heritage Farm headquarters in the Driftless Region surrounding Decorah, Iowa. And every time we hear it, we are inspired to work just a little harder at what we do.

So what is it we do? Why is our work so important? And how does it help feed the world?

The Beginning
Since 1975, Seed Savers Exchange has protected the biodiversity of our food system—and our planet—by preserving rare, heirloom, and open-pollinated varieties of seeds in our seed bank at Heritage Farm and encouraging gardeners and farmers worldwide to grow, harvest, and share heirloom seeds as well as recount the inspirational stories behind them.

It was her own children’s future that inspired Diane Ott Whealy to co-found Seed Savers Exchange with heirloom seeds for treasured tomato and flower varieties lovingly brought to Iowa by her Bavarian great-grandparents in the 1870s. Word about the organization spread quickly, and before long a small group of concerned gardeners began saving and swapping their own rare, heirloom varieties and donating seeds to our collection, which would soon become the center of a growing movement. These seeds and their stories—passed from generation to generation—may well have been lost if not for the foresight of these visionary gardeners and their singular dedication to preserving biodiversity in the face of changing farming and gardening practices.

Today
Seed Savers Exchange focuses on stewarding and sharing the large collection of open-pollinated varieties the organization has since amassed, thanks in large part to that original group of dedicated gardeners. The varieties are truly priceless—some represent a family’s immigration story, while others produce memorable, flavorful food dished up, year after year, at family gatherings. Together the seeds of these varieties compose an irreplaceable genetic resource that may well guarantee the security of our future food supply. These rare, diverse seeds ensure that we have varieties adapted to different climate conditions and resistant to certain diseases. When seed diversity is strong, our food system is protected, as this diversity increases the probability of having crop varieties that thrive in adverse situations.

Today, more than 45 years later, we house the nation’s largest nongovernmental seed bank of its kind, where thousands of rare, heirloom varieties are safeguarded for generations to come—our children, and our children’s children.

Snake River Seed Cooperativehttps://www.snakeriverseeds.com/Planting environments in the Intermountain West vary greatly including Arid High Desert, Urban, and High Mountain regions. We’ve partnered with seed growers from some of these areas to provide you with a greater range of planting guides, covering Zones 3b-7a!

Hearty thanks to Affinity Farm in Moscow, ID and Titbout’s Seeds in Missoula, MT for collaborating with us!
Snake River Seed Cooperative is a collective of family farmers in the Intermountain West who work together to produce a wide diversity of regionally-adapted seeds. We believe that sharing seed-saving knowledge with farmers in our region is vital to growing a robust, regional seedshed. In January 2022 we transitioned to our current cooperative ownership model from a single-owner LLC model. We currently have 10 grower owners and 5 employee-owners and operate as a benefit corporation.

Snake River Seed Cooperative cannot label our packets as certified organic. Each of our growers has taken a pledge to keep their field or garden free of any synthetic herbicide, pesticide, or fertilizer. We strive to be the best possible stewards of the land under our care. Our seeds are grown in low-input systems that more closely mirror most home gardens. This ensures that the seeds in our packets will perform well in any garden.

Are our seeds Non-GMO?

We will not sell any genetically modified seeds. We believe genetically modified organisms (GMOs) pose significant threats to our agriculture, culture, and democracy itself and we do not grow or sell GMO seeds. We have taken the SAFE SEED PLEDGE:

Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI)

We believe that seeds should remain a part of the public commons and we do not knowingly grow or sell varieties that are patented. However, we believe continued plant breeding is crucial to the progression and adaptation of high-quality organic seeds that can thrive in a changing climate. Therefore, we pay voluntary “royalties” of 5% of OSSI pledged variety sales to the plant breeders who spend years creating new varieties and then release them open-source into the world for other farmers like us to grow and save seed from. If a breeder of a variety isn’t specifically mentioned as a royalty beneficiary of a variety, but you know the breeder (or ARE the breeder!) please let us know.

Our Purpose

The purposes of the Corporation are to unite farmers cooperatively and democratically to create a sustainable, regenerative, bioregional seedshed while being committed to employee welfare and producer-driven economics, while also engaging in any legal activity and to create general public benefit as defined under Idaho law.

Our Vision

To grow a robust regional seedshed for the Intermountain West!

Our Mission

To empower Intermountain West farmers and gardeners to plant, grow, save, and share locally-adapted seeds.

Seeds From Italyhttps://www.growitalian.com/(785) 748-0959seeds@growitalian.comSeeds From Italy is the U.S. distributor for Franchi Seeds, Italy's oldest family-owned seed company, founded in 1783. Franchi Seeds is known worldwide for the quality of its seeds, resulting in high germination rates, generous seed counts, vigorous plants, and delicious food.

Featured Products
Seeds from Italy was started in 2001 by Bill McKay, a dedicated gardener and cook, because he couldn't find the Italian vegetable varieties he wanted to grow.

marthaandbill-tn.jpgBy luck, he happened upon Franchi Seeds, Italy's oldest family-owned seed company, which offers an extensive selection of traditional Italian varieties. Franchi didn't have an agent in the U.S., so Bill started importing the seeds and reselling them. For the next decade, Seeds from Italy grew rapidly under Bill's enthusiastic ownership. That's Bill at right, being interviewed by Martha Stewart.

In 2011, Bill decided he was ready to retire. He sold the business to Dan Nagengast, a long-time market gardener in Lawrence, Kansas. In addition to growing vegetables and flowers for local markets, Dan was director of the Kansas Rural Center, a nonprofit that advocates for sustainable agriculture and family farms. The Lawrence Journal World wrote about Dan taking over the business and posted a video interview that you can watch here.

Dan is married to Lynn Byczynski, the founder of Growing for Market, a national periodical for market farmers, and the author of several farming and gardening books, including The Flower Farmer: An Organic Grower's Guide to Raising and Selling Cut Flowers. The couple's adult children, Will and Laurel, also work in the business.

Initially, the family operated Seeds from Italy from their small farm near Lawrence, Kansas, where they grew the Franchi varieties themselves to get thoroughly acquainted with them. In 2017 they moved the business to an office and climate-controlled warehouse in town.

img-4719.jpgFinally, we would be remiss to not mention the other valuable members of our team: Angus, who warmly welcomes all visitors (except deer), and the sisters Rosie and Vera, who let all mice know that they are not welcome.

Everyone here at Seeds from Italy thanks you for your business and hopes your crops will be robust, plentiful, and delicious!

About Franchi Seeds

In 1783 (the year the American Revolution ended) Giovanni Franchi started selling seeds around the market squares of Parma from his horse-drawn cart. The company is still in the same family 235 years later, with Giampiero Franchi at the helm and modern facilities in Bergamo, near Milan. Franchi Sementi (Sementi is the Italian word for Seeds) is a family-owned business that is not affiliated with any other seed company.

Franchi Sementi is so much more than just packaged vegetable seeds; it’s a story of tradition, pride, experience, quality, and excellence handed down over seven generations.

Seed is stored in climate-controlled rooms to maintain its viability. Varieties are regularly grown in trial gardens outside the warehouse to be sure they are correctly named and consistent; the photo below shows a small portion of the trial gardens.

img-0208.jpg

Franchi buys 70% of its seed from Italian farmers. Someone from the company visits those farmers regularly to ensure the seed crops are healthy and quality standards are observed. The small percentage of seeds that are not purchased from known contractors are grown out in the trial gardens to ensure their quality.

Franchi seed packets are big and beautiful! The amount of seed is always generous, making them a great value for the price. Packets have full-color photos on the front and descriptions in multiple languages on the reverse. We add an English-language label with growing instructions, too. Most important, Franchi seeds grow strong, healthy plants that will give you delicious food and beautiful flowers.

Grow Italian and taste the difference!

Types of Seed We Offer
Certified Organic Seeds
Organic Seed
Certified Organic Seeds
Seeds designated by the OG symbol are harvested from plants grown under the strict guidelines required by the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP), and more specifically the laws enacted by the Code of Federal Regulations. Organic certifying agencies are the vehicle for ensuring that farms/growers wishing to become and remain certified — including Johnny's Selected Seeds as a certified seed producer and handler — meet and follow these guidelines.

To be labeled as certified organic, seeds must have been grown, harvested, stored, and handled in accord with the rules and procedures outlined by the NOP. Certified organic seeds cannot contain genetically-engineered traits; must be grown under certified organic conditions using only those inputs — eg, fertilizer, weed, and pest controls — allowable in organic agriculture; and packed in a certified facility.

Johnny's has been farming organically for over 45 years, and we have been a MOFGA-Certified Organic Seed Handler since 1979. We offer hundreds of varieties of certified organic vegetable, herb, flower, fruit, and farm seeds allowable for certified organic production, and remain true to our commitment to diversify our certified organic seed offerings.

All Certified Organic seeds are designated by an OG in the product name.

HYBRID SEED
Hybrid Seeds
JSS-Bred F1 Hybrids
F1 Hybrid seeds are the result of a cross between two genetically distinct parent plant lines. The plants grown from these seeds will usually show more vigor than either of the two parent plants, and often more vigor and uniformity than similar non-hybrid (standard) varieties. To create a hybrid (F1), traditional breeding methods are used that involve the cross-pollination of two parent varieties that were selected for specific traits.

Commercially, hybrid seed must be produced by the seed producer each year by crossing the inbred parents. Inbred parents are used because they express characteristics uniformly, and this uniformity is also seen in the F1 hybrid plants — F1 referring to "first filial" or first generation after the cross.

Natural crossing in the field may also result in useful hybrids. However, the F2 or second generation after the cross, grown from seeds saved from F1 hybrid plants, will not be uniform, and in fact often will have numerous different types as a result of genetic segregation.

Johnny's hybrid varieties are selected for improved flavor, disease resistance, and climate adaptability. We offer numerous F1 hybrids.

All Hybrid seeds are designated by an (F1) in the product name.

OPEN-POLLINATED & HEIRLOOM SEEDS
Heirloom Seed
Heirloom Seeds
We also offer hundreds of Open-Pollinated (OP) varieties, which are the varieties of plants that reproduce themselves naturally, through either a) cross-pollination (between separate individual plants of the same species and variety via wind, insects, water) or b) self-pollination (between male and female flower parts within the same flower or between separate flowers on the same plant). As long as they are grown isolated at a sufficient distance from crops of the same species but of a different variety/ies, the offspring plants grown from seeds collected from them will continue to demonstrate relatively stable traits from one generation to the next.

Among older open-pollinated strains are the varieties we have come to regard as Heirlooms — carefully selected varieties whose seed lines have been maintained and passed down over generations.

While the plants of open-pollinated varieties in general are fairly similar to one another, they are not as uniform as those of hybrids, and there can be a tremendous amount of genetic variability among the strains of the same open-pollinated variety. For this reason, our Open-Pollinated Project involves growing-out and carefully evaluating distinctive strains of numerous open-pollinated and heirloom varieties every season, to select and offer only the most reliable, best-tasting, most fragrant, or attractive strains of these varieties.

In addition, organic seeds are available for most of the open-pollinated and heirloom varieties we offer.

Enhanced Seeds
The majority of our seeds are untreated and uncoated, and all our seeds are neonicotinoid-free.

There are 3 main types of seed enhancements Johnny's regularly features: Treatments, also known as "Actives"; Coatings, which include Film-Coating as well as Pelleting; and Priming. These are described in more detail below.

Treated Seed
Treated Seeds
TREATED SEEDS (ACTIVES)
Treated seeds have been coated with a fungicidal treatment that protects the seeds from soilborne pests or pathogens during the seeding and germination phases. All our treated seeds are neonicotinoid-free.

Note: The seeds themselves should not be used for food, feed, or oil purposes.

All seed products that have been Treated are denoted by a T in the part numbers.

Treated Seeds …
FILM-COATED SEEDS
Film Coating is another type of seed enhancement that facilitates ease of sowing. Film coating may be useful to increase seed flowability through better "slippage" between individual seeds; make the seeds easier to see as they are being handled or once placed in growing medium; assist with seed identification; and/or decrease dust in planting conditions. With film-coated seeds, certified organic growers should check suitability of the film coating with their certifier.

Some, though not all of our Film-Coated seed products are designated by an FC in their part numbers. If seeds are offered with an NOP-compliant film coating, it is not noted in the part numbers.

Film-Coated Seeds …
PELLETED SEEDS
Pelleted Seed
Pelleted Seeds
Pelleting is an enhancement that coats the seeds with inert substances that render them uniform in size and shape. The pellet coating serves to improve seed visibility, handling, and sowing accuracy at uniform distances (singulation), thereby reducing seed waste and the need for thinning.

We have recently introduced multi-seed pellets for certain varieties. As the name suggests, there is more than one seed (generally 4–5) in each pellet, which makes the multi-seed pellet ideal for retail container or hydroponic production. In place of sowing several seeds per container or growing-media cube, just one pellet is sown, saving labor time and expense. These are conventional pellets and are not approved for use on certified-organic farms.

Conventional seed with Conventional Pelleting is designated by P in the product number.
Conventional seed with NOP-Compliant Pelleting is designated by JP.
Certified Organic seed with NOP-Compliant Pelleting is designated by GP.

Pelleted Seeds …
PRIMED SEEDS
Priming is a seed enhancement used to improve germination speed and seedling uniformity, or to break the dormancy of the seeds. Priming can be offered alone, or in combination with pelleting.

The process of priming involves hydrating seeds in a solution within a controlled environment, allowing the initial phase of germination to take place, then arresting the process at a certain point, at which time the seeds are dried down to moisture levels conducive to storage. The materials used in the germination solution, usually salts to control water uptake by the seeds, dictate whether the priming process can be certified as organic.

Currently, we offer two primed varieties, both conventional: Primed Rosemary and 'Maxifort' tomato. Pelleted lettuce is also sometimes, but not always primed, a characteristic that varies from seed lot to seed lot. Our certified-organic seed is primed using when the process is necessary, and using only certified-organic priming methods.

Because primed seeds are sold in a germination-ready state, we recommend purchasing only enough primed seeds for your current growing cycle.

Welcome to Fedco Seeds, your source for cold-hardy selections especially adapted to our demanding Northeast climate. Each year we observe hundreds of varieties, selecting only the best for inclusion in our catalogs. Through our product lines and cultural hints, we encourage sustainable growing methods. We offer a large selection of certified-organic cultivars and regional heirloom varieties. We buy products from all over the world.

Fedco has five divisions: Seeds, Potatoes, Onions and Exotics, Organic Growers Supply, Trees, and Bulbs, and sends out three catalogs annually. We work out of three warehouses on the Bellsqueeze and Hinckley Roads in Clinton, Maine. We are primarily a mail-order business and do not have a retail store. See our current responses to COVID-19 for current information about curbside shopping and pickup at Fedco. Click here for directions to our warehouses.

Our big annual retail events are our booth at the Common Ground Country Fair in Unity, Maine, the Bulbs pickup and surplus sale day, and periodic visits to other special events. We do not take phone or fax orders.

Because frosts can occur in our location nine months of the year, and the ground often remains frozen for five months from late November until mid-April, we have evolved a seasonal shipping schedule for perishable items.

We ship trees and perennial plants only in the spring.
We ship fall bulbs and garlic only in fall just before planting time.
We ship seed potatoes and onion sets only in April and May.
We ship seeds from January through October, then take a break to prepare next year’s catalog.
We ship books, supplies and cover crops year round.
We have been in the seed business since 1978. We took on the Tree order from John Bunker in 1983, added fall Bulbs in 1984, picked up potatoes from Tom Roberts in 1985, and the Organic Grower Supply order from MOFGA in 1988. Beginning from a Maine base with 98 orders the first year, we now serve growers in all 50 states, filling over 58,000 orders totaling $6 million annually.

about fedco bottom image
We are a cooperative, one of the few seed companies so organized in the United States. Because we do not have an individual owner or beneficiary, profit is not our primary goal. Consumers own 60% of the cooperative and worker members 40%. Consumer and worker members share proportionately in the cooperative’s profits through our annual patronage dividends.

Our cooperative structure gives workers a real voice in running the company and a real stake in its success, enabling us to attract and retain talented workers. Year after year our staff turnover has been very low.

Our company culture derives from our history as a cooperative. Our first customers were other cooperatives and we developed many of our procedures specifically to serve them. Although we have diversified, a significant proportion of our business still comes from cooperative or group orders. Our dedicated group-order coordinators are partners in our business. We encourage you to make cooperation work for you by forming ordering groups to take advantage of our generous volume discounts. It is easy to form a group: get together with friends, neighbors, co-workers or other members of your club, grange, county or state organic chapter, church or coop. See more information about sending your group order in the mail or about group ordering online.

The cooperative ethic recognizes that we are all in this together. What is good for our managers should be good for our workers and good for our customers and vice versa.

Pinetree Garden Seeds & Accessorieshttps://www.superseeds.com/207-926-3400help@superseeds.comCelebrating 40 years of serving the home gardener!

Located in rural Maine, we are a family owned and operated business. Operating since 1979, Pinetree Garden Seeds was founded with the simple mission of offering low prices on quality seeds to the home gardener.
A family owned and operated business since 1979, Pinetree Garden Seeds was founded with the simple mission of offering low prices on quality seeds to the home gardener. Over the years offerings have expanded to include over 1300 varieties of seeds, including many Heirlooms & Organics, a huge assortment of tools and gardening gear, books, live plants, and soap making/crafting supplies. Located in rural Maine, we operate out of a 300 year old farmhouse and strive to offer the best service and products with a personal touch.

In 2011, the company was passed down from it's founder, Dick Meiners, to his stepdaughter Melissa. She and her family are excited to continue the mission of supporting the home gardener by offering affordable, high quality seeds and goods.

Dear 2023 Gardening Friends,

Another year for the history books! Thank you to everyone who once again allowed us the privilege of being your source for seeds and gardening goodies. We are always deeply honored by the trust you put in us to provide nourishment for you, your families, friends, and neighbors.
We have all heard and felt the realities of shipping delays and rising prices, and sadly, our industry is not immune. After many years of stable prices, we have been forced to reevaluate based on grower pricing and vendor increases, and you will see the resulting modest price increases across many items. We appreciate your understanding and we continue to focus on offering value and a robust selection of high quality seeds as well as fair shipping charges.
The good news for this year is that many beloved items are back in stock! We were thrilled to reintroduce some top producers throughout the catalog so be sure to check for your favorites. Every year we spend the summer packing your seeds (mostly by hand!) and planning to ensure the fastest shipping and best assortment we can, so please let us know if you have any suggestions! As always we love to help troubleshoot any growing questions or concerns so reach out anytime for some friendly advice.
This year was marked by worldwide challenges, but also some very close to home. I have spent the last year battling, and beating, cancer and am entering 2023 with a renewed appreciation for life, and my returning health. In my absence, the team here at Pinetree came together and kept things running smoothly and I am truly grateful for each and every one of them. They are some of the kindest, most thoughtful people I know and I am deeply touched by the support, kindness, and tenacity they have shown over the past year. Everyone here makes a difference and they are all deeply dedicated to you, our customers. I am very grateful to each and every one of my staff and for each and every one of you.

Melissa

Signers of the SAFE SEED PLEDGE

Proud to support sustainable agriculture, Pinetree has never sold any genetically modified seeds and has signed the Safe Seed Pledge, promising never to sell any GMO seeds. We have pledged our support to local efforts to label GMO foods and strive to offer an extensive selection of heirloom seeds in an effort to support the ideals of responsible and organic gardening practices.

“Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. Further, we wish to support agricultural progress that leads to healthier soils, genetically diverse agricultural ecosystems and ultimately healthy people and communities.”

MiGardenerhttps://migardener.com/810 300 8845contact@migardener.comThis pole bean dates back to 1914, when it was introduced as the new standard in pole snap green beans. Bred with market growing in-mind, this variety produces abundant amounts of 5-6 inch long pods, semi-flat in shape and very tender. Harvest young for the most tender pods and support as needed. Plants will easily exceed 8 feet if allowed. When I started MIgardener in 2011, I wanted to inspire others to grow a garden, live healthier lives, and have fun doing it. With the help of social media, that was all made possible! In 2014, my beautiful fiance joined me in that dream. With her career in design, she has established the creative vision for MIgardener with her amazing eye for detail. Sindy and I got married in 2015 and dedicated our full attention to working hard on building our business, growing a 100% organic garden, and achieving financial independence by opening up our very own seed store!

Today, MIgardener can be found on YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook. We believe gardening should be made fun and accessible to anyone of any skill level. We hope that by making this gardening information accessible, it will empower others to establish food security through home gardening. The MIgardener community now acts as a center of information, encouragement, and hope for all. Our slogan “Grow Big or Go Home” was created to help drive home our mission. We believe that when you put 100% effort into something, you will get 110% back.

Best for Heirloom Varietieshttps://www.rareseeds.com/store/vegetables(417) 924-8887seeds@rareseeds.comWe offer America's most diverse selection of heirloom seeds! These varieties have often been saved and passed down by gardeners for generations. Heirloom varieties are packed with flavor, beauty, and fragrance. Free shipping in the USA.At Baker Creek, our passion is Saving, Growing, and Sharing rare seeds! Our mission is to provide seeds of a sustainable food supply for everyone, keeping heirloom varieties alive for future generations. We believe farmers, gardeners, and communities have the right to save their own seeds and, in so doing, preserve seed diversity and food security in an age of corporate agriculture and patented, hybridized, or genetically modified seeds. All the seeds we sell can be saved, shared, and traded, and we encourage people to save their own seeds.

Charitable giving is a foundation of our business. Working with non-profit organizations, a significant portion of our annual profits goes toward providing food, emergency aid, sustainable development, and education to people in the U.S. and abroad. We also provide free seeds to hundreds of community and educational groups each year. We believe everyone should have access to nutrient-dense, delicious food, season after season.

Founder Jere Gettle started Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company in 1998 as a hobby, and though it has since grown into North America's largest heirloom seed company, we've never lost our passion for growing and sharing heirloom varieties. Jere's original 1998 catalog included around 70 varieties. He distributed 550 copies to friends, family members, and fellow seed savers. The next year, catalogs shipped to nearly 20,000 gardeners, and circulation grew each year as new customers discovered the seeds -- and the story -- of Baker Creek. Today, we distribute a total of about 1.4 million catalogs featuring approximately 1,000 stunning heirloom varieties.

Our headquarters in Mansfield, Missouri, includes trial gardens, greenhouses, a pioneer village, and a seed store, all on the homestead where Jere started the business as a teenager. We also operate a seed store in Petaluma, California.

Baker Creek began hosting festivals in 2000 as a way to bring gardeners, homesteaders, and natural foods enthusiasts together to exchange ideas and seeds, learn from renowned experts, and enjoy vendors, old-time music, and more. Our public events include the National Heirloom Exposition, which draws more than 20,000 people each year. For the Expo's 10th anniversary, the 2023 event will be held beachside in Ventura, California. Our Tulip Festival, Spring Planting Festival, and Fall Harvest Festival are hosted at our Mansfield, Missouri, farm each year.

Gilbert H. Wild and Sonhttps://www.gilberthwild.com/417-548-3514customerservice@gilberthwild.comWhile Supplies Last… A few times every week our team will pick a few popular plants and drastically reduce the price. Don’t miss these great promotions. Our passion since the foundation of Gilbert H. Wild and Son© has been to provide plant lovers with many of the world’s finest varieties with excellent pricing and our 2023 Spring catalog proves just that. We grow our own plant stock, unlike most mail-order companies, so we can control quality and shipping costs. We work for years producing home grown plants that we are proud to grow, dig and ship directly to you.

Our history began when James Herman Wild was on a wagon train bound for the southwest when it broke down in the Southwest Missouri region. James was influenced by the beautiful meadows of wildflowers he saw and settled in Sarcoxie, MO in 1868. In 1885, his son, Gilbert Herman Wild paid $45.00 for a crate of peony roots from Europe which he planted behind his family’s home. Three years later, the flower blooms were sold to an Omaha Wholesaler for $3.00 each. That single sale launched Gilbert H. Wild and Son! As the family farm grew, daylilies and iris were added to the farm.

Today, we raise plants on over 100 acres of rich Missouri land and have grown to be one of the largest growers of daylilies, iris and peonies in the world. We take great pride in our plants and work many hours caring for them in our rich Ozark Mountain soil. We also keep several greenhouses full of sun-loving and shade-loving perennials. We pride ourselves in delivering many of the highest quality, freshest plants available on the market. EVERY PLANT OFFERED IN OUR CATALOG WILL BE SHIPPED IN THE SPRING, AT THE PROPER PLANTING TIME FOR YOUR AREA.

We guarantee our plants and consider customer satisfaction our top priority – please order with confidence knowing that our team has been caring for each plant. Ordering plants is easier than ever with our newly designed website. Please visit www.gilberthwild.com and give us a try! Or, if you prefer, call us at 888-449-4537 to place your order over the phone. Would you like an additional catalog for yourself or a friend? You may request one to be mailed for free!

Thank you for your loyalty; we know that you have many choices for your plant purchases, and we will continue to work hard to maintain your trust. God bless you and have a great gardening year!

Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center Inc.http://www.heirlooms.org/252-368-6556smac@heirlooms.orgThis summer the Sustainable Mountain Agriculture Center has relocated to North Carolina. The Center continues to collect and grow out heirloom seeds from the Southern Appalachian region. We utilize college students during the school year and summer to help produce and preserve the seeds in our collection. We have added seeds to the catalog for the first time in two years. These varieties are listed under the What's New category above and you can find them in our catalog. We have over 175 varieties of beans for sale to the public and many different tomatoes from the region as well. We look forward to the upcoming season and serving you all to the best of our abilities.Although there are still a significant number of farms in the southern Appalachians, the number of those farms that are economically viable is decreasing. The pressure the region has felt in the past few decades to give up farming altogether has been intense. Large scale farms in the mid-west, Florida and California are producing the vast majority of our food in the U.S. today because of the economics of production. Small farmers have been unable to compete on a cost basis, which has led to the small farm being seen as a viable option only for those farmers who also have off-farm jobs.

A major goal for this Center is to demonstrate to the people of the region that farmers do have viable options to off-farm jobs when they diversify and utilize the whole farm, including woodlots. Products this region can produce can compete with large-scale farms on the basis of quality. The heirloom market is a flower in the bud stage, just waiting to blossom. We want to use our skills and information base (developed over many decades) to bring to the forefront the importance of quality heirloom fruits and vegetables. It is our hope that this Center will go far toward making mountain agriculture sustainable.

Another goal of the Center is to educate old and young alike in the appropriate techniques of seed saving, cultural practices, food preparation, food preservation and entreprenuership.

We assist in:
Identifying, collecting and sustaining family and community heiroom seeds and plants and coordinating the activities of growers of heirloom fruits and vegetables.
Training young people (including high school and college students) during the main growing season to collect, grow, promote and develop markets for a wide variety of heirloom fruits and vegetables.
Making Appalachian counties become more self sufficient in food production by working to develop more farmers' markets which feature high quality heirloom fruits and vegetables.
Training owners of small woodlots in the effective use of less intrusive logging practices and in the use of one-person sawmills and solar kilns so that such owners' wood products have more value added at their points of origin.
Hosting a seed exchange for all interested persons on the first Saturday of October each year

The Naked Seed Companyhttps://nakedseedcompany.com/info@nakedseedcompany.comThanks for stopping by our store. Our goal is to provide a wide range of heirloom seeds along with open pollinated varieties for your gardening enjoyment.Originally from Eurasia and a member of the mint family, motherwort got its name from its use by midwives. The biennial plant can grow up to 5' tall with pink to purple flowers which bloom from midsummer to early fall. This plant can become invasive, so choose your location carefully or consider container gardening.

Growing information: Motherwort grows well in many conditions and soil types. Seeds need to be stratified for several weeks before sowing by soaking them overnight then placing them in a plastic bag with equal amounts of sand and peat and keeping them in the refrigerator. Alternately, sow the seeds in the fall. Scatter the seeds on prepared soil and cover with 1/4" of soil. Thin plants to about 1' apart. Seeds can be started indoors several weeks before the last frost and transplanted after hardening off. Cut the plant down to several inches above the soil level after the flowers bloom but before seeds form to limit spreading. Cuttings can be used to propagate.

Min qty/packet: 100 seeds

A Reminder
PLEASE don't plant too early!
Don't look at the calendar. Look instead at the thermometer, at night temperatures. Plants grow at night.
Plant when night temps are above 55-60 degrees for peppers and eggplants, 50-55 degrees for tomatoes.
This means planting in May for most of the country.

Young plants hate cold feet, and will perform poorly if planted early. It is better to plant 3 weeks late, than 1 day early. When nights are warm, young plants thrive. When nights are cold, young plants catch a chill, growth is halted and plants become more susceptible to disease. Plants always do better when the night temps are warm. No young plants like cold and wet.

Please also think about the plants' time in transit. If the box is subjected to very cold outside temperatures, the plants inside the box will be damaged. Here are our Safe Delivery Weeks. This is the earliest that we will guarantee safe delivery to your area. We can ship earlier, but you will need to sign off on liability if plants arrive cold damaged.

Plants shipped on our very first ship date will be the youngest/smallest plants of the season.
These plants may need to have a bit of extra care, and will not be as large as those shipped later in the season.

Not sure when to plant? Check out our Safe Planting Date Map.

Please read and follow our planting instructions which will accompany your order, paying special attention to slowly acclimate these plants to your garden. Never open the box and plant same day!!!

Dirt Goddesshttps://www.dirtgoddessseeds.com/The general rule of thumb is that Planting garlic is 2"+ and that less than 2" is used for eating. Any garlic can be planted however, regardless of size. If you're a small backyard grower and don't mind growing smaller garlic, Culinary garlic size may be a cost saving option for you. When Kristen was a kid, she’d pull the carrots from the ground before they were ripe, wash them in the baby wading pool and munch away. It was the beginning of her love for gardening.

Fast forward and she found herself at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington with its organic farm on campus, and Ecological Agriculture program. It was there where she realized that her passion for growing things would also become her career. With the abundance of herbs and fungi in the Pacific North West, her learning grew beyond the scope of just how to plant (and eat from) a garden.

When deciding on her master’s thesis, she collected all of her information and designed a project to test the difference in growth rates between corn which had been inoculated with Mycorrhizal fungi and corn which had not. Right off the bat, the root structure of the inoculated corn was much better developed. A frost hit and wiped out the non-inoculated corn. Amazingly, the corn that had been inoculated with Mycorrhizae was still standing! She knew she was on to something important.

Kristen knew she had to share this amazing fungus with the world! She began fortifying vegetable, herb and flower seeds and sending them all over the country to re-inoculate soils everywhere!

Dirt Goddess Super Seeds was born!

Welcome to the Hudson Valley Seed Company: your source for heirloom and open-pollinated garden seeds and beautiful garden-themed contemporary art. We are a values-driven seed company that practices and celebrates responsible seed production and stewardship. Our Mission
Here at the Hudson Valley Seed Company, we are both farmers and storytellers. We are committed to growing organically, sourcing locally and sustainably, and preserving crop diversity by selecting unique, rare, and hard-to-find varieties. Every seed in our catalog is open pollinated, many are heirloom and organic, and they are never GMO. We were one of the first companies to sign the Open Source Seed Initiative (OSSI), and we will remain committed to our values of sustainability to the last. We believe that a seed is more than meets the eye: it is a time capsule telling tales of the plants, crops, and people that came before us, and we work with a range of artists as diverse as our seeds to pass those stories down to present and future gardeners.

Our Art Packs
Our Art Packs unite practical aspirations in the garden with the universal human desire for beauty, meaning, and joy. Each year, we release a call for art seeking artists to interpret the varieties in our collection, and hundreds of artists apply from across the United States. But there’s a lot more to an Art Pack than the beautiful exterior. Open it up, and a whole seedy world unfolds...

We hope these seedy stories will take you on a beautiful, fragrant, delicous tour of gardens past—and inspire you to let their legacies loose in your yard!

The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse is an family owned and operated heirloom seedhouse and plant nursery in southern Ontario, Canada. We have been providing rare and endangered heirloom varieties of vegetables, herbs and flowers to gardeners and market growers since 1996. We specialize in open-pollinated, non-GMO, organic heirloom seeds. We are committed to preserving genetic biodiversity, and our goal is to save from extinction as many rare plant varieties as we can, in an aim to serve our lofty goal of saving the world one seed at a time.

The Cottage Gardener Heirloom Seedhouse has been a passion project from the start. Thirty years ago, we moved from the city to a 10 acre field in rural Ontario with our two small children. First, we planted trees; then we built a house. We've never quite finished the house; it seems to have always taken a back seat to more important activities like homeschooling, garden digging, seed sowing& plant propagation, fort building, tadpole searching and spaghetti squash boat-building.

Now, we have a safe haven for rare & endangered plants and for the myriad forms of wildlife that share this spot with us. We even have an Elfin Glade for the little folk.

In 2015 we bought the farm next door as well, expanding our space to 20 acres and adding a much-needed barn and clear fields for growing larger-sized seed crops (not to mention a magic tree and an otter pond!)

Territorial Seed Companyhttps://territorialseed.com/800-626-0866info@territorialseed.comThe Garden Planner is the perfect way to create plans of your growing area and organize your vegetable garden. The online software makes it easy to create plans regardless of the size or shape of your growing area. It enables you to calculate how many plants will fit into a space, change the design and keep track of plants on your garden layout, making succession planting and crop rotation much simpler. Whether you use raised beds, traditional row-based planting, or the square foot gardening method, the Garden Planner has features to making planning and keeping track of your garden simple.Territorial Seed Company is a privately held company, wholly owned by Tom and Julie Johns. Purchased in 1985 from its founder Steve Solomon, Tom and Julie have grown the business substantially over the past 40 years but have never strayed far from the original course set by Steve.

The first Territorial Seed catalog was written in the fall of 1979. Running a regional seed company responsibly meant sifting through the thousands of varieties available from a worldwide market to find the highest-quality, best-adapted ones, so Steve grew a serious trial ground in both summer and winter, consisting basically of comparison plots. The garden had clay soil with less than a gallon of water per minute from the well.

The earliest seed-production crops were grown in isolation within neighbors' backyards; including an open-pollinated Brussels sprout, a heirloom cranberry bean, and Lorane fava bean cover crop seed. In wintertime, the mail-order seed business operated in a drafty warehouse, where customers waited their turn on the telephone party line and neighbors who seasonally helped in the warehouse, took turns chopping kindling to keep the woodstove stoked.

Territorial Seed Company grew fast, and within a few years 100,000 mail-order catalogs and several thousand copies of Steve Solomon's 1981 natural gardening book "Growing Vegetables West of the Cascades" were going out the door every year. Back in came several letters a day asking for answers to gardening problems, so Steve made time for horticultural study. He writes whimsically of being a ''capital-O Organic gardener with capital-O Opinions'' that hybridized over the five years in big-o organic wisdom. A fast-growing business started on a shoestring required the reinvestment of virtually every cent. After five years of hard work, Steve considered his choices for simple living or a big business.

Tom and Julie Johns remember the 1985 newspaper ad which simply read ''... mail order seed company in Lorane for sale.'' They were early Territorial Seed customers. It suited their self-sufficient lifestyle in Cottage Grove of organic gardening, home canning, and building their own home. Tom was part of the Cottage Grove Sentinel's advertising staff until 1984, calling on Main Street businesses for the booming 40-page weekly paper, when Main Street businesses sold everything needed for daily living. Through the recession of the early 1980s, Tom traced the decline of local business to those tied solely to the local economy. With this insight, Tom and Julie decided to add self-employment to their self-sufficiency. Cottage Grove had groomed a good team with Julie's accounting years at Cottage Grove Hospital and Tom's print and marketing skills. It would be exciting. They would have their Aunt Molly's Ice Cream Treats customers in the summer and package and ship tiny seed delights for Northwest gardeners in the winter. Sold!

Did you know that the average distance any supermarket-bound vegetable or fruit travels to the store is 800 miles? But a gardener's own fruits and vegetables move from the garden to the table within minutes, with every ounce of nutritional value intact. Tom and Julie's first Territorial Seed catalogs offered a fresh-from-the garden look and alternative, as Tom focused on expanding selections of customers' favorites; more tomatoes (from 15 varieties to 75), then sweet peas, garlic, year-round lettuces and sunflowers for the birds. After the regional catalog came a national catalog and a Canadian catalog. Their Winter Garden Catalog, first published in 1988, remains the only winter garden catalog in the United States.

In 1987, Tom and Julie invested in 44 acres for trial grounds at London Springs, south of Cottage Grove Lake. Each year Territorial's research garden staff grows and evaluates thousands of varieties for best taste, Northwest hardiness, and good germination. More recently they began reclaiming older, favorite vegetable varieties sometimes shelved by their seed suppliers. Harvesting their very tiny product has been their biggest challenge. In Lorane, they dried the bean pods on ground tarps and winnowed the seed from the pods by hand. Then they tried grinding tomatoes in a garden variety chipper-shredder and fluming the seeds out, similar to panning for gold. But seeds still keep their age-old secrets of survival, and Territorial's seed saving techniques range from natural fermentation to the newest processors. Today they grow almost 20% of the seed they offer, especially lettuces, tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash.

Currently they find themselves in good company ''capital-O Organics'', excited about taking leadership in advising the evolution of organic agriculture from a movement into a mainstream market. There are about 70 full-time and seasonal employees locally, strategic alliances with universities and European plant breeders, and a zillion worms making compost and plant teas. Plant the seed, they say...or buy, grow, harvest and clean, store, catalog, package, sprout and love each seed and take a capital-O Opportunity to grow your dreams with Territorial Seed Company, Cottage Grove, Oregon.

We are Kollibri terre Sonnenblume & Nikki Hill. We farmed in Cascadia from 2005-2014, first as urban farmers in Portland, then in the countryside of the Willamette Valley and the Olympic Peninsula. After that, we dropped out to do other things.

In the 2020 season, now in the Gila River valley in New Mexico, we made a big effort to grow food and save seeds. With this store, we can share some of the fruits of our labor with you.

Our growing practices:

Our crops are “organically-grown”, which means we follow organic standards, but that we are not “Certified Organic,” which requires inspections and fees. We have chosen not to certify for a number of reasons, among them the expense and also philosophical differences with the National Organic Program standards, which are becoming increasingly watered-down by corporate interests. We are also so small-scale that we are officially exempt.

We do our best to be responsible stewards wherever we are, caring for the soil, and for the flora & fauna. We do not use pesticides or other poisons. We are water-wise. We choose crops that do not require extraordinary and unsustainable efforts to grow. Self-interest is also a motivator: the plants we grow and harvest are our own food and medicine, first and foremost.

Bartering:

We will trade / barter our seeds as well. Contact us through our form here with a list of what interests you and what you are offering. Examples of what we will accept include: other seeds, home preserved foods from your own gardening or foraging, herbal medicines, or your own crafts.

Why should you grow heirloom flower seeds?

Over many years of gardening, I have become convinced that growing open-pollinated or heirloom seeds is the way to go. Here are six reasons why:

1. Open-pollinated flowers have more vigor than most hybrids. In general, they are taller and more floriferous than their hybrid counterparts, many of which have been bred to be so compact that there's not much left! Many heirloom flowers are great for cutting, thanks to their taller stems. As an added bonus, fragrant heirloom flowers like sweet peas are often more strongly scented than their modern counterparts.

2. Heirloom flowers reseed true to type, unlike hybrids, which don't come true from seeds that you save yourself. Why spend money buying new hybrid seeds every year when your home-grown plants can produce seeds for you? Some heirloom perennials even bloom the first year from seed.

3. Heirloom flowers and vegetables are the popular varieties beloved by generations of gardeners. They have been tried and proven over time. They are still around because they were admired by gardeners who saved seeds for future generations.

4. Many heirloom flowers produce pollen and nectar for hummingbirds, bees, butterflies and beneficial insects. Growing heirloom flowers helps to save these species, many of which are endangered in our modern world.

5. There are heirloom flower seeds for every garden situation, including shade, drought, deer resistance, containers, groundcovers, rock gardens, cold zones and warm zones.

6. Heirloom flowers make great companion plants for roses, bulbs and ornamental grasses. And, of course, they are perfect for the cottage garden.

southern exposure seed Cohttps://www.southernexposure.com/(540) 894-9480gardens@southernexposure.comThis online tool helps manage your garden throughout the season and from year to year. You can order our seeds directly from the planner. Try our Garden Planner Tool free for 1 weekWe encourage cooperative self-reliance in agriculture. We promote and participate in seed saving and exchange, ecological agriculture, reducing energy use, providing locally adapted varieties, and regional food production. To further these aims, Southern Exposure offers: heirloom varieties to conserve and distribute rare and endangered varieties; open-pollinated varieties to encourage seed saving and exchange among gardeners; disease- and insect-tolerant varieties to reduce pesticide use; and varieties for local and small-scale growers to encourage regional food production.

What we offer
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange offers about 800 varieties of vegetable, flower, herb, grain and cover crop seeds. We emphasize varieties that perform well in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast, although gardeners and farmers over the country grow our seeds. As of 2017, over 60% of the varieties we offer are Certified Organic, and over 60% are grown by small farmers we know and contract with directly. We offer many unusual Southern heirlooms, One of our gardens in springincluding peanuts, southern peas, naturally colored cotton, collards, okra, roselle, turnip greens, corns for roasting and meal, and butterbeans. We do not sell chemically treated seeds.

Our business structure
We are a worker-run cooperative where every worker has a voice in the decisions of the company and where workers receive equal compensation regardless of the economic value traditionally placed on the jobs done. We strive to provide a flexible and enriching work environment where each person is inspired to take on multiple roles and to think creatively about how we can continue to improve our work. We have a commitment to quality in all aspects of our service to our customers.
Our location
Southern Exposure Seed Exchange is located in the rolling hills of central Virginia, on Monocan land, between Richmond and Charlottesville, not far from Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello. Our 72-acre farm has goats, chickens, hayfields, an herb garden, and extensive vegetable gardens for seed production, trialing, and eating. Recently, we hold an open house at least once a year, and we may have additional public events here in the future. However, we do not have a storefront, and our location is not open to the public on a day-to-day basis.
Our seed storage and testing
All our seed storage areas are air conditioned, refrigerated, or frozen for long-term viability. We also dehumidify our seed curing and seed storage areas to prolong seed viability. Our seed is germination tested to ensure it meets both federal and Southern Exposure standards (our standards are higher than federal standards for some varieties.) Test results are printed on the packet to help you determine planting density and quantity needed. Please note that germination tests are often conducted under optimum conditions and that field results may vary.

High Mowing Organic Seeds started with a vision that we still hold today: It is our goal to leverage the power of seed to transform our world.

OUR HISTORY
High Mowing Organic Seeds began in 1996 with just 28 varieties, many of which originated in founder Tom Stearns’ backyard. Tom Stearn’s passion for the development of productive, organic varieties started small, but has grown into a thriving and hardworking community whose efforts everyday make organic seed available to home gardeners and commercial growers across North America.

With over 700 heirloom, open-pollinated and hybrid varieties of vegetable, fruit, herb and flower seed, High Mowing’s commitment to furthering organic agriculture continues to grow and in turn grows the organic movement. True to our roots, High Mowing Organic Seeds continues to source many of the varieties we sell directly from independent, passionate organic seed farmers.

OUR PHILOSOPHY
At High Mowing Organic Seeds, we believe in re-imagining what our world can be like. We believe in a deeper understanding of how re-built food systems can support health on all levels – healthy environments, healthy economies, healthy communities and healthy bodies. We believe in a hopeful and inspired view of the future based on equity, environmental justice and better stewardship of our planet. Every day that we are in business, we are growing; working to provide an essential component in the re-building of our healthy food systems: the seed. We know that together we can build a greener, more just and community supported world, one seed at a time.

As we've grown, we have continually worked to sell only the best quality organic seed for varieties selected for their exceptional performance in organic conditions. We have expanded the selection and availability of organic seed, we've reached out to other farmers, locally and across the country, to produce seed for us, and we've established partnerships with wholesale seed companies that have made commitments to develop and produce organic seed.

In our own operation, we’ve implemented the highest quality standards for seed testing and invested in our on-site lab and Quality Control department, we have purchased state-of-the art seed cleaning and sorting equipment, we have built a knowledgeable customer service team – many of whom are growers – to answer customer questions, and we have maintained a rigorous trials program to assess and develop varieties that thrive in organic conditions.

THE STORY BEHIND OUR NAME
Farms in New England in the 1700’s practiced the mowing of hayfields to be stored as off-season feed for livestock during the long, cold winters. Instead of calling such a field a “hayfield” like we do today, they called it a “mowing”. These fields were usually further identified by a descriptor referring to location: the “back mowing” was behind the farm, the “low mowing” was in the valley, and the “high mowing” was up on the hilltop.

In northern Vermont, where small rivers wind their way through mountainous and hilly terrain, nearly all mowings are “high mowings”. A hundred years ago, farms on these hillsides had names like “High Mowing Farm” or “High Mowing Acres”. When our seed company first started, we not only liked the sound of “high mowing”, but it was an old, regionally specific, agricultural term that fit the kind of seed company we are: farm-based and rooted in a place.

THE PEOPLE AT HIGH MOWING
All of us at High Mowing Organic Seeds are passionate about food, farming and the environment. Some of us run our own farms. Some of us have farmed in the past. Most of us grow some of our own food. We are a fun-loving group with diverse interests, brought together by our common love of sowing seeds, our appreciation for the importance of sustainable agriculture, and tolerance of a cold climate.

American Meadowshttps://www.americanmeadows.com/(877) 309-7333customerservice@americanmeadows.comInspired Pre-Planned Gardens & Collections make garden design simple. Our gardening experts have created plant groupings with complementary heights, flower color, and bloom time, so you can plant once, and enjoy watching your garden unfold during the season! It's the feeling that washes over you while out in the garden, your senses soaking up all that nature has to offer. The blissful moment when you dig into the earth, and like magic, all the noise and swirl of the world melts away. It's believing you can make the world a better place. It’s an emotion that connects us to a sense of purpose, to the land, and to everyone around us.

That feeling is at the heart of everything we do at American Meadows. It’s our sunshine – the source of our passion that keeps us going and growing to this day.

It's a joy that our founders, Chy and Ray, wanted to share with the world. In the 1980s, they followed their dream and moved their family to the rolling hills of Vermont to start a wildflower farm. Visitors from across the country would meander the farm’s enchanting meadows and wooded paths filled with wildflowers. One by one, they discovered the magic of meadowscaping.

Chy and Ray had the moxie to help others see what could be better. The wildflower farm was their way to share the power of meadowscaping – and encourage gardeners to boldly reimagine what they could do with their own patch of Earth. Where others saw a tidy suburban lawn, they suggested a mini meadow. Where others saw an apartment rooftop, they pictured an urban meadow retreat. And in spacious empty yards and fields, they helped envision a meadow bursting with native wildflowers to nourish bees, butterflies, and birds!

And that's just a better view of our world.
Looking outside and imagining glorious possibilities, then making it better with your own hands. Embracing that hopeful feeling within yourself to benefit your community and the planet. Creating beauty where we may least expect it. At American Meadows, this is what we help gardeners do. We’re leading the Meadowscaping Movement because we know, every bloom brings a smile, every flower we share brings us closer, every plant makes a difference.

When we meadowscape – we dig in. We transform not only the land – we transform our lives. Together, collectively, we nurture and cultivate real change that shapes our world.

Jung Seed Companyhttps://www.jungseed.com/800-297-3123info@jungseed.comAt the present time Jung's prints 8 catalog titles and over 8 million catalogs each year, with about 3,500,000 of those being the spring and fall versions of the Jung catalog.John William "J.W." Jung only set out to make enough money to raise a family when he started selling seeds from his parent's farmhouse, but his determination, common sense, thirst for knowledge and love for growing seeds and plants ultimately resulted in a company that supports hundreds of families.

After completing a two-year business program at the Oshkosh Business College in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, JW wanted to learn more about the seed business. His interest in seeds started in his mother's garden and was further piqued when the Salzer Seed Co. of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, would stop in town to sell seeds out of a railroad car. In 1905 he landed a job with the H. W. Buckbee Seed Co. in Rockford, Illinois, where his 10 hour days, six days a week job earned him $25 per month - and a wealth of experience. He was often quoted as saying he learned more in his short stint at Buckbee's than he did in his two years at college, and that much of what he learned was how NOT to run a company. He opened orders, filled orders and then moved into the print shop where he helped print labels. That exposure to printing would prove invaluable in the coming years.

After a year at Buckbee's, JW returned to Randolph. He set up shop in an upstairs bedroom which his mother allowed him to use and his father allotted him some land on which he could grow seeds. In 1907 he printed 400 black and white 5"x7" catalogs using a small hand press. Although profits were small, 1909 there was enough money to purchase a Chandler and Price cylinder press, resulting in 10,000 catalogs being printed. He often remarked that the delivery of that press was one of the biggest thrills of his life. To market his company, JW began writing articles for farm magazines in exchange for advertising space.

In 1910 a new two-story building was erected on the Jung family farm to house the seed company which by now had about 500 customers. As the business grew, it became apparent that the rural location of the business made transportation challenges a problem, especially in winter and early spring. He decided to move the business to downtown Randolph in 1913 to be near the post office and railroad.

In 1918, JW married Wilhelmina (Minnie) Blockwitz. In addition to raising 3 children, she was very active in the business, serving as the company bookkeeper. Her meticulous hand-written records are treasure items in the Jung archives. She also reviewed the sales books to determine which ads were working and whether items were popular enough to continue selling. Daughter Betty said that, "If it wasn't for both of them, they could never have hung on during the Depression. JW took no paycheck during the Depression and relied on the financial support of others. He never forgot those supporters. And he vowed he would never be in debt again."

In 1919, JW purchased the Alton Hall, an opera house in downtown Randolph, to accommodate the growing business. Nursery stock was added to the offerings in the catalog. By 1935, the catalog mailing was up to 280,000.

JW and Minnie's oldest son, Wilfred, and son-in-law Tuenis (Betty's husband) joined the business in 1942, with John Carl, their second son, coming on board in 1950.

In 1951, a couple knock-down blows followed in succession - first, the death of his beloved Minnie in April, and second, the seed company building was struck by lightning on May 31 resulting in the loss of most of the contents including the original hand press and JW's vast collection of seed catalogs. Only the business records were saved.

Following the fire, it was decided to rebuild on the outskirts of Randolph where there was ample space to expand. Additional land was purchased and construction of the new company headquarters was completed in early 1952.

It is often said that JW was as much a printer as he was a seedsman. After all, the printed catalog was the vehicle that drove the seed sales. If JW had soil under his fingernails, he had printer's ink on his fingertips. He loved designing the catalog, writing the descriptions and operating the presses. Jung's was the last major seed company to print its catalog in-house, doing so until 1987, the year JW reached 100 years of age. JW passed away in 1988, 2 months shy of his 101st birthday.

Family members and a loyal staff of employees played an integral part in the success of the company through the years. Brother Louie helped get the business off the ground, another brother, Herman (known as Kerb) also worked in the business. His brother Fred helped him through the depression with financial loans.

Son Wilfred (Wil) served as company bookkeeper and was key in the printing operation where he deftly transformed company nurserymen into pressmen for three to four months of the year. His fascination with gadgets brought Jung's into the computer era in the early 1970's when a keypunch system was installed for customer records.

John Carl inherited JW's keen interest in seeds and studied agronomy and horticulture at UW-Madison while working on his seed industry major. He introduced hybrid seeds into the Jung catalogs as well as other new seed and nursery crops. When the company could no longer meet the demands of growing all its crop needs, he sought out the best growers and locations for contracting the company's needs. He managed Jung Farms, Inc., a subsidiary of J. W. Jung Seed Co. established in 1961 to market farm seeds such as corn, oats and alfalfa.

Son-in-law Tuenis (Tueny) Zondag was instrumental in establishing the Jung Garden Centers. The first garden center was set up in a room in the new company headquarters in 1955. It rapidly outgrew its space and a larger store was built in 1972. A second store was opened in Stevens Point, Wisconsin in 1989. Three more were added in the Madison, Wisconsin area in 1991, one of which was closed after several years. Two years later another location was added in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, bringing the current total to five. Tueny also took an active role in the catalog printing and nursery operations of the company through the years.

Grandson Richard (Dick) Zondag currently manages the company, assisted by his brother, Robert (Bob) Zondag and son Nathan Zondag. At the present time Jung's prints 8 catalog titles and over 8 million catalogs each year, with about 3,500,000 of those being the spring and fall versions of the Jung catalog.

D. Landreth Seed Companyhttp://www.landrethseeds.com/877-385-4989help@landrethseed.comLandreth catalogues and almanacs have been prized for centuries for their authority. Alas, due to an abiding love for our fields and forests and a desire to honor our environment, we have ceased publishing a paper catalogue and, therefore, humbly seek the favor of Landreth’s fans in subscribing to our newsletter (enrollment below). An industrious British immigrant arrives in the New World to establish himself as a seedsman. David Landreth’s success attracts his brother, Cuthbert, to the enterprise and together, they built an organization dedicated to supplying American Seeds for the American Climate.

Printing one of the first catalogs in the country for home gardeners and market growers, Landreth’s seeds were found everywhere including George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, fueling soldiers on both sides of the Civil War and in the prized possessions of wagon trains heading West.

As we, the American gardening population has grown and evolved, the values upon which David and Cuthbert Landreth staked their name has endured. Quality. Fair Prices. Innovation. Knowledge.

OUR REPUTATION: Innovators and Seedsmen
We continue to be innovators in the ongoing tale of American horticulture. As the first catalog to introduce tomatoes to the continent, zinnia pioneers, the original breeder of Long Standing Bloomsdale spinach, a variety that continues to be the most popular spinach ever grown, and much, much more. Throughout our storied past, we have also proudly introduced some of the most innovative gardening tools and farm implements available. (That said, we currently have no plans to reintroduce the Progressive Poultry Killer – see our 1893 catalog)

Heirloom Mountainhttps://www.heirloommountain.com/(970)730-6275heirloommountainseedswomanllc@hotmail.comStart with something easy, like peppers. Peppers do not need to be fermented , like tomato seeds, you just let them dry on the vine. Just make sure you wear gloves for hot peppers, as the oils are still able to burn you if you don't. But only grow one type of pepper, as they cross easy; It's hard to imagine but you can get some pretty gross or cool crosses. So if you want that same pepper, keep it clean, by 300-1600 feet. If that seems impossible you can hand pollinate peppers by placing a mesh bag over the plant that protects the flower from bees. Just use an electric toothbrush to gently knock pollen onto your paintbrush and gently pollinate the other flowers. Long term you'll need to cross many plants to keep the genetics alive, but for a season or two- just two plants could doEver wonder why red tomatoes seem to be the most popular? I admit I spend so much time reading about tomatoes and with my psychology degree I have noticed a few things about names and trends that finally made me answer that particular question. Why is the red tomato the most popular? Is it because it has the most delectable flavor? Or is it a fashion trend that came with the commercialization of the America diet? It all started around 400 years ago. Explorers from Europe "discovered" a beautiful "golden apple." They brought them back to Europe (particularly Italy) where it became an instant hit, (other cultures "discovered" other colors and named them "love apples" believing them to be toxic.) It was about 10 years after the first "gold" orange tomato that red tomatoes hit the scene. Now these "golden" tomatoes made a huge hit in Italian cultures and the people they shared seed with. Imagine the impact if we were discovering tomatoes for the first time, so many new recipes. It would be called a super-food like all the other "new" fruits we get. Well imagine a shiny red tomato hitting the scene while this golden one is still traveling around and hot. It was still enjoyed but became old news. (News didn't travel fast like today, no seed companies on the internet, so some people were still getting the old one by the time the explorers were coming back with the new one.)

"Have you tried the new tomato?" I imagine their translation to be.

"Of course, we grew beautiful Golden Apples this year" They excitedly reply back.
"No, no. There is a new red one now They are calling it a tomate." The In-The-Know person brags.

Now, I adore orange tomatoes, in fact, I like all of the colors, red, white, green, yellow, blue, purple, brown, pink and black. Did I miss one, let's call those interesting ones "striped.' But you know how it is. A trend happens and suddenly that cherishly named "golden apple" becomes a second rate citizen, that's "old news." What if it happened to be a red tomato discovered first and a white one discovered second. White fruit was fairly rare and if you give it a bit of coverage some varieties stay parchment white with no yellow hue. People do love blanching cauliflower. We will never know for sure, as different cultures do treasure different things. But I smell and old trend at hand.
