Semptember 11
On September 11, 2001, 16 years ago, 19 militants associated the extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the United States. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Almost 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Let us take a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives.

Love seeing all the silver on campus, in support for those with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by episodes of mood swings that range from depressive lows to manic highs. This disorder is actually quite common, as it affects 5.7 million American adults, with symptoms of Bipolar Disorder arising during the late teenage years. Don’t forget to wear red tomorrow to create awareness and show support for those with ADD/ADHD.

Hello Mustangs! Roughly 1 out of 5 women identify as lesbians. The term Lesbian comes from a Lebanese poet named Sappho. She wrote about beautiful women and is one of the earliest historical lesbians. Always remember sexuality is not an insult! Be kind to one another!

Mental Illness Awareness Week
Hopefully, we all wore red to show our support for those with ADD/ADHD. Approximately 6.4 million children have been diagnosed with this disorder, while about 8 million adults are currently living with ADD/ADHD. ADD/ADHD is a disorder that causes attention difficulty, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness in those affected by it. Remember to wear teal tomorrow to support those with OCD.

Stigma Free
Stigma is when someone, or even you yourself, views a person in a negative way just because they have a mental health condition. Some people describe stigma as a feeling of shame or judgement from someone else. Stigma can even come from an internal place, confusing feeling bad with being bad.

The StigmaFree campaign is NAMI’s effort to end stigma and create hope for those affected by mental illness. Through powerful words and actions, we can shift the social and systemic barriers for those living with mental health conditions.

Complete your StigmaFree Pledge at http://tinyurl.com/stigmafree17 on Friday. Look for the StigmaFree table near the cafeteria on Friday to show your pledge or confirmation for a FREE watermelon strawberry switch drink.
