This has some of the insights to the colour and symbol keys used in this quiz. There are only so many characters that you can fit on a map quiz so apologies if your favourite as been missed out.

The colours, groupings and symbols should enable you to deduce character identities. Not all relationships and characteristics of each character is represented as this woud be too chaotic, hopefully most of the important ones are represented.

1. The "Atomic Number" in the upper right corner is purely for sequencing purposes

2. The lower number below the symbol is the number of mentions in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hobbit excluding Appendices, the Silmarilion or any other Tolkein works

3. Extra outlines of any colour represent close blood relations (as far as cousins/aunts/uncles)

4. White symbols denote members of the Fellowship of the Ring, everyone else has black symbols

5. Hearts connect characters that are married to each other by the end of the Lord of the Rings

6. White edging denotes ringbearers who WERE NOT corrupted by the rings they bore

7. Black edging denotes ringbearers who WERE corrupted by the rings they bore
