5/13/2013 16:11:34CanadaTorontoA smaller profit-making business7773020How to identify and integrate into the business/operational model a full-spectrum of feedback loops that are necessary to build a business in which societal/environmental sustainability, as well as profit, are the measures of success

Identifying the skill-sets that are needed for building and operating a strongly-sustainable business.

Identifying measures of success for the business that are used both for planning and evaluative purposes

Methods for engaging all stakeholders in ways that they all comprehend how they fit into the business model. This will almost certainly include strategies for ensuring that they feel a sense of ownership and 'buy-in' related to the business. Part of this challenge is to ensure that all involved understand how all organizations (and individuals for that matter) have 'shadows' (i.e. aspects of the operation and behaviour that, given the opportunity, many would prefer not to take responsibility for) that must be understood and addressed in appropriate ways.

That the planning processes used in any SS business incorporate: the Compass of Sustainability (Nature, Economy, Society and Wellbeing) as a planning frame; use indicators to ensure that relevant contemporary trends related to each compass direction are both identified and grounded; a process for identifying leverage points within relevant systems forces that will enable maximum benefits related to sustainability.

Great idea, You need to include larger businesses, You need to include not for profit organizations (NGOs etc.)Great idea, go for itThe book must be based on a timely and understandable definition of (a) sustainable development as process and sustainability as goal and (b) corporate/organizational sustainability.
Common definitions and heuristics (Brundtland, TBL) lead to fuzzy notions and are often over stretchted. In the wake of the re-definition of the Millenium Goals (2015), new concepts (such as Griggs et al., 2013 in Nature) but also new discourses ("production for abundance") are emerging.

It should be published by the lead author/the community directly (as Alex did). This will ensure bigger cashflows right from the start, lead to faster break even and avoid that a publisher - who has no risk - earns money based on others efforts!
As said, the usual publishing business model should be avoided.
Concerning communication: the community should use ONE main channel to communicate, be it a hub, forum, blog, wiki, whatever. Using too many channels (and forcing people to join Facebook and the like) would certainly discourage some people.

5/17/2013 16:28:08CanadaLindsayA smaller profit-making business, An Educational institution777What you're talking about is creating a new decision making framework that includes metrics beyond shareholder value. It should be scale neutral. The only difference between a not-for-profit and a for profit entity is the acceptable range for revenue minus expenses. NFPs and NGOs all have to produce something of value to their stakeholders within a defined cost.Great idea, go for itPlan for the sequels. This will be an iterative project over time. The application is where the primary differences arise. It's going to be more important to get the big brush strokes right than to understand or communicate the nuances created by industry vertical or scale. I would look at the demographics of B corps to figure out where to focus. They are the automatic audience for this topic.Alan Savory - Holistic Management. He's well known in Sustainable Agriculture circles but his strategic planning and decision making framework is easily ported to other industries. There is some interesting overlap with your Strong Sustainability model.1. Required1. Required1. Required2. Important2. Important2. My experience suggests that the key is to establish a size able network in advance and have a price point for people to kick in the change in their pocket if they consider it a good idea. I haven't seen a lot of uptake by people 'buying up' for increased involvement or flashier rewards.Make sure you allocate time and money for a professional editor. I've done a lot of business writing in my career (bus strat consultant with PwC and then IBM) but I've been pleasantly surprised by the impact a good editor has had on my first book.

You also might want to check out Iguana Books in Toronto. They have an interesting business model that combines a lot of the benefits of self-publishing with the benefits of having a publisher without the headaches of being with a major. (Full disclosure: I've chosen to publish with Iguana after starting down the self-published route. I can't comment on the full experience yet as I am a few months from publishing yet.) Greg is well respected in the publishing world - it would be worth having coffee with him.

Organizations/people with more money could pay and be part of the higher tier, and organizations/people without as much money could "earn" a way into the higher "levels" by either in-kind work or community engagement. E.g. doing certain things = X points, when someone has Y points they can have access to the higher levels, although they must remain engaged or it won't be "renewed" in the next year. That way you'll make sure to have some very engaged people who can support the wealthier organizations who provide the financial support.

I think it'd be interesting to support the book with practicum groups because I find that people often don't know how to act on the ideas in a book without a little help.

New models of success - clearly it can't just be about high growth, high profit businesses, so what does it look like and how do I know what to aim for?

Participatory design - how do we engage, activate and collaborate with 'consumers, customers, stakeholders' in new ways? How do we springboard off of their innovative ideas and catalyze them to act in new ways? I've been exploring this a lot in my work and I think it's the only way to make large leaps.

12/16/2013 16:28:57CanadaTorontoA smaller profit-making business, A NFP built like a business not a charity4352010How do I (the royal I;) get paid? The purpose of work ostensibly (setting aside the existential) is to get paid. The desired outcome of my (royal) work is wealth for me and my family. Sustainability will not trump that desire.

Capital is organized around value. The only proven method of value measurement is Profit & Loss accounting. Even charities are measured for capital efficiency. How do you generate an acceptable accounting system to drive capital towards more sustainable businesses?

The productive tension of Capitalism vs. Socialism. How does this equation translate into Sustainable? Socialism has been annihilated by Capitalism. Where are your allies, how is Capitalism induced (unlikely) to participate or more likely how is it co-opted?
You need to include not for profit organizations (NGOs etc.), You need to include governmentsGreat idea, but very hard to do, Focus on the sector you can generate the change you want to see as an outcome of the book. My answer would depend on the focus. Indicated below. The answer for Government, NGO, and NFPs is certainly that they should evolve to become strongly sustainable. The answer for profit driven businesses is much less clear. Good to Great.
