197121972My moms and them, they should have never said - we lived off Northern Blvd, Northern blvd was the strip. They said, “don’t go up to Northern Blvd.” You can’t tell no kid that! First chance I got I went up to Northern Blvd because I wanted to see what Northern Blvd was about. That’s where all the stores were at, all the drug spots, that’s where everybody would hanging out, all night. Stores were open, things were open, 24 hour spots, little clubs were up there. I wanted to go up there, I wanted to be up there and hang out. And the older guys, that’s where all the crooks were hanging out. The gamblers, the stick up guys, the burglars, the bank robbers and everything - they all up there. And so, as a little skinny guy, when they asked me to come and do a burglary with them, they needed a skinny guy - me - to slip through the stuff and open the door for them. So that’s what I did. it went from lookout to open the door. And I ain’t really get no money out of this. I just, they were there. 1978We had rulesWhen they indoctrinated me into the criminal life, there were rules we had to abide by . . . If you robbed a civilian in the neighborhood, the guys were going to turn you in to the cops. But anyone part of the criminal life was fair game. It's nothing to be proud about, because still I was a criminal. But we had rules and that's the way I was brought up in the criminal life. 20631963My family lived in a tenement in the Bronx. We didn't have a lot but we had a strong community. My mom always worked long hours as a domestic worker. 206721967Corona, Queens: kids raising themselvesI never felt poor until we moved to Queens. In the Bronx, we lived in an apartment but we had friends and family around, there was always someone looking out for us kids. And everyne around us was the same as us so I never thought about us being poor. In Queens, it was different. 207112071When I was 9 years old, a friend of mine was killed. I started changing in school. I went from being an A student to being a fool. I lost a number of people when I was young and I started becoming desensitized toward death in order to deal with it.

2079Age 17Another guy from the street and I, we were shooting at each other. I got shot in the arm. I went to the hospital, they asked me who shot me but I wasn't going to tell them. Then they wanted to keep the bullet after they removed it but I didn't want them to so I checked myself out and went home with my arm in a sling. I still have that bullet in my arm by my elbow.
