For example, at my age, I judge that it is too late for me to learn to derive pleasure from my helping people (teaching them, healing them, mentoring them, etc) because I never had much of a capacity there. So I do not waste my time trying to acquire the ability to take pleasure in that, and consequently I plan my life and career so that my success does not depend on my performing well at those sorts of activities (i.e., helping people). On the other hand, as a child, I found pleasure in collecting things (stamps, coins, etc) but I go away from that when intellectual pleasures took over my life, and also because the pleasure of acquiring and holding possessions is deprecated in the social circles I aspire to. But lately I have concluded that it would make sense for me to cultivate in myself the capacity to take pleasure in having things, e.g., a nice apartment and nice clothes. Point is that I have come to believe that people only ever perform particularly well at activities that bring them pleasure, and consequently the abiiity to take pleasure in things is an important personal resource that must be cultivated and directed strategically. | No | 3 | 5 | No

I have motivational issues. I've gone to counseling about it, but to no avail. I feel like Phineas Gage - seemingly perfectly rational, even overly rational, but making poor decisions. What I've found is that it's always obvious to Jonathan what to do. As it is obvious to anyone I talk to. As it is obvious to me what others need to do to solve their issues. But it's not obvious to ourselves, because (I think) our own problems are all wrapped up in ego, hope, self esteem, etc. | No | I've wondered about the relationship between my lack of motivation, my lack of religious feeling, my lack of duty bound morality, and my relative imperviousness to contagious belief. The ability to see the nonsense of automatic values may be a symptom of not having them. I had no idea these issues were so prevalent on LW, and was shocked to see the bazillions of search results for "motivation akrasia". | 3 | 7
