6/20/2020 16:31:47Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceOboe and Flute solos start it out. Some 32nd notes- possibly difficult for timing. Trumpet & clarinet call and answer - little bit hard. Needs good players. Subdivide with staccato sixteenth notes as a pulse for the brass - hard to keep together. Another oboe solo.Bassoon and euph take the melody (unusual but good!). Trumpet & clarinet call and answer - little bit hard. Needs good players.Vibes have hard measure at 67. Bells solo! - rare (nice touch) vibes answer it. Percussion ends the piece.Almost an Irish or Scottish feel to it. Little bit of a "down" ending.8Bowles, Ashton

6/20/2020 16:32:41Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceFlute, Oboe solo/duet(need strong players), tricky fingerings for clarinet in the beginning, love the bassoon part @ 12, rhythm and articulation @ 68 for upper woodwindsnice euphonium & tuba line @ 16, not very brass heavy until almost the key change, not a lot of percussion, percussion must be on point since there is not much going on balance throughout the group with all the staggered entrances, meter changes, dynamic contrast5Hillis, Aleesha

6/20/2020 16:32:56Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceIntonation can be an issue. Timing of entrances can be difficult. Balance and intonation can be difficult at times for brass, especially trumpetThe pace and timing of the mallet percussion can be off.Intonation and balance for winds, and keeping a steady pace in percussion will be the biggest challenges7Southern, Richard

6/20/2020 16:33:06Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, ContestFlute, oboe, and clarinet solos. Clarinet part consistently smooth passages over the break which aren't easy even for advanced players. Big bassoon part! Supplemented by euph.Trumpet solo, very interesting tuba part! Surprisingly active brass parts through much of this, but plenty of long tones too.Lots of mallets, but not crazy. Nonpitched is more sparse; typical for a lyrical."Scottish Snap" rhythm will need to be worked out in time. Students will want to rush it. Balance with soloists will be tough. Quicker rhythms at the slow tempo will want to rush, tempo throughout will be a focus.8Bays, Kevin

6/20/2020 16:33:06Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceCall and response motives from the very beginning, with a large focus on the entire woodwind section (and euphonium).Brass is later added to bring in more volume and support for a stronger tutti sound. Trumpet soloist opportunity.Very little percussion other than auxiliary, melodic, and timpani. This becomes more when the piece builds to the climax.Great opportunity for soloists and overall lyrical playing. Has a great change in mood half way through, while still remaining lyrical.9Christensen, Alexander

6/20/2020 16:33:10Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, ContestDifficulties: Clarinets arpeggiating over the break. Some high notes for the solo clarinet. Strengths: Not hard rhythms overallStrengths: very easy brass rhythms. Difficulties: High A for trumpets. Strong tuba section for intro.Difficulties: you need 4 timpani and to change pitch on 1. need 2 strong keyboardists. strengths: easy parts for students not on keys.Strength: not too high overall. Difficulties: Slow tempo at beginning and end might drag more bc of dynamics.10Stearns, Robert

6/20/2020 16:33:20Parting Glass, TheChange of Paceflute solo and long melodies. clarinets playing large leaps in harmony for long periods of time. decrescendo on high F. oboe solo. Really isolated horn part with big ol' counter lines and melodies (okay they have altos too sometimes)exposed and important mallet percussion parts. make sure the triangle and bells are copesthetically pitched at 91. lyrical teaching tool. accented the Scottish snap figure. has lots of lyrical parts but also has the big bits the "other" kids will enjoy. some more intricate rhythms. 8Arnold, Seth

6/20/2020 16:33:21Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, ContestOpens with flute and oboe solos. 2nd and 3rd clarinets stay below the break for the first 67 measures. Important Bassoon part (dbl in Euph) high WW technical stuff at 68Not too demanding from brass. Could be a nice break if your opener or last tune was a chop buster. Gets a little more demanding with ranges toward the end of the piece.Mallets are extremely important on this piece. They add a lot of color, so have strong mallet players on those parts.must listen, and move together! ensemble unity.8Young, Mark

6/20/2020 16:33:25Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Contest, LyricalHeavy woodwind piece with solos (double reeds especially) built throughout. Great if you have wonderful bassoon/oboe players unless you rewrite for another instrument.Trumpet solo partway through requires a solid player due to higher range.Beautiful bell part that plays melody throughout. Good use of mallet percussion with a vibraphone solo at the end. Exposed chords could lead to intonation issues8Loomis, Benjamin

6/20/2020 16:33:27Parting Glass, TheContestRequires strong players in flute and oboe for solos. Closing section requires strong ww players for the 16th note sections. Also need good clarinet soloist. Strong trumpet player needed for the solo. Brass lines are very lyrical. Need a capable horn player to cut through ensemble. Limited percussion instruments used. Would not fit a band with many players. Very active bell part that is unison with woodwinds. Important vibes part. This piece requires a lot of concentration and maturity from the ensemble members. 7Lubbers, Jacob

6/20/2020 16:33:31Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceFlute and oboe solos at the beginning.

All three clarinet parts travel between the chalumeau and the clarion regularly.

m. 68 upper ww could get carried away - you'll need to work balance so they don't overpower the melody (and the rest of the world).

Oboe and clarinet solos at m. 83 are not difficult but very exposed. Need confident players.
Tubas (and bcl) get the "Scottish Flip" - fun!

Euph solo on the first statement - make sure you have a good sounding player.

Trumpet solo to a high G.
Vibes and bells have exposed parts. Vibes solo near the end. It's in a comfortable key and changes to a more comfortable key halfway through.

Sextuplets in the flute, asx, and euph.

Great piece for phrasing and balance. Also a good piece to see if you've trained your audience not to clap until your arms go down!!

6/20/2020 16:33:32Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceNice Bassoon Part, doubled in Euph/Horn parts. Unison runs in Fl, Ob, Cl parts. Oboe solo, not doubled in score.Good approachable brass lines. 6/20/2020 16:33:35Parting Glass, TheContestFlute, oboe solo. Legato arpeggios in clarinet 1-3 (up over the break in clarinet 1). Melody in bassoon! Sextuplets in alto saxophone and flute. 32nd note runs in flute. 32nd, 16th note rhythms at 68 - even though they are slow, teaching students to read them. All clarinet parts are over the break. Melodic material in euphonium. Trumpet feature. All ranges are appropriate for grade level. Sextuplets in euphonium. Really basic percussion set up of just suspended cymbal, triangle, crash cymbal and bass drum, timpani, mallets. Would be great for a small percussion section. Strong mallets needed, someone who can pedal appropriately on the vibraphone. Meter changes, key change. 4Roetzer, Kiersten

6/20/2020 16:33:36Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Solo/Soli FeatureVery independent and important oboe part.
Beautiful chalumeau lines in both clarinet parts.
Not technically difficult. A lot of exposed melodies and countermelodies. The mallet parts are extremely important and beautiful.
Unique, independent woodwind-mallet interactions in the introduction.
Almost every melody in this pieces starts on the off-beat.
M28 has a Flute-Bassoon-Horn Soli, which is an interesting combination of instruments.

6/20/2020 16:33:36Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Nice Scottish melody on a balladExpanded arpeggi written into all Clarinet parts.

Flute/Oboe/Clarinet/Bassoon solos.
Very accessible brass parts that primarily accompany the WW doing the lifting in this piece.Vibraphone solo in the Coda section, contemplative ending to the pieceBassoon/Euphonium carry the melody in the exposition (easy ranges).

WW figures dance over the top of a full ensemble passage, that drives toward a nice Horn melody before returning to the original tune in an Oboe solo.

6/20/2020 16:33:38Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceSolo opportunities in flute and oboe and clarinet, maestoso gets intense with constant playing in ww, sixteenth and 32nd notesTrumpet solo goes up to G, not all block playing but much of the rhythms are doubled within the sectionBells add new sounds as well as double flute parts, bells and vibes get a small feature at the end, standard instrumentationPhrasing in 3/4, doesn't sound like its in 3/4 at times, phrasing is irregular,9Phelps, Brent

6/20/2020 16:33:38Parting Glass, TheChange of PacePiece opens with a flute solo. There are some 32nd notes followed by 16th notes in the upper register of the woodwinds, but because of the slow tempo it seems very manageable for a high school group. There are also a few clarinet solos, but in comfortable ranges. Beautiful trumpet solo. Goes up above the staff so be sure to have a strong player. Lots of lush and supporting chords within the brass parts. Trumpets split into thirds sometimes so be sure the partials are correct. The opening mallet parts are used to compliment the flute solo. Quarter note triplets used. Bell and vibraphone solo at the end of the piece. There are lots of little nuances throughout the piece with triangle so important cues are hit at the right time. There is a beautiful melody line between the bassoon and euphonium in the very beginning. Great to have a bassoon player showcase this section. The melody is very pleasant to listen to and almost ethereal. 10Wright, Nicole

6/20/2020 16:33:39Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Solo/Soli FeatureFlute solo in the intro. Opens into a nice woodwind feature. Sounds like a bassoon solo after that. WWs have complete control of the texture in the beginning. Oboe solo towards the end. Clarinet follows. Brass need to be able to accompany the melody in the beginning and avoid overplaying. Mallets double melodic material/ have exposed parts, but there are not a lot of important perc. parts otherwise so far. Mallets super important in the end.Nice chorus features. Shifts textures between brass/ woodwinds nicely. Lots of important solos.7Tamondong, Corey

6/20/2020 16:33:39Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceFlute and oboe solos in the beginning, nice bassoon and euphonium feature in the second theme, counting in the 32nd notes in the clarinets and flutes altos and french horns, another oboes solo followed by a clarinet solo.Euphonium range seems rather highImportant vibes and bell parts in the opening phrase, call and response/ echo between vibes and bellslots of moving countermelodies happen under the main melody. Balance may be a challenge. euphoniums, alto saxophones and flutes have some runs. 2/4 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures.8Tompkins, Christine
41
6/20/2020 16:33:42Parting Glass, TheNoveltyTiming of entrances, intonation. Bassoon part is prominent and exposed- will need to have a good player. Oboe solo. Clarinet solo.Trumpet solo. Make sure long tones don't bend in pitch. Should support the ensemble rather than dominate. Mallets need to stay in time since they drive the ensemble with moving notes.Balance is important. No individual should dominate.8Karbel, Fiona
42
6/20/2020 16:33:45Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Noveltythe walking clarinets lines add nice movement but will require a very independent section, the flutes add flourishes before the climactic point of the piece with will need to be hear and not covered, there is also a clarinet and oboe solo towards the end, the brass get a familiar tune as the main melody which melts into a trumpet solo, this would be nice to use to showcase a smaller but strong section, the horn section will need to be brought out making this a difficult piece for a band the doesn't have equal instrumentationthe percussion part features a mallet solo which will need to have a strong counter due to the fact they are the only one playing for the ending. This would be a good piece for a smaller yet very strong ensemble 8VanCura, Kelsi

6/20/2020 16:33:45Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceKeep sixteenth/32nd note "statements" together and in time. Key is comfortable for players.Have euphonium/bassoon stand at the front and not get drowned out by other sections. Full balanced brass sound needed for climax of piece. Key is comfortable for players.Have the vibraphone ring in an appropriate way for the style of the piece. Key is comfortable for players.Subtle dynamic changes will add to the effect, and watching for tempo adjustments.9Mello, Colleen

6/20/2020 16:33:46Parting Glass, TheContest, Solo/Soli FeatureBegins with an exposed flute solo joined by an oboe solo, exposed woodwind opening, first clarinet solo, m. 68 woodwind runsEuphonium soli (with bassoon), Trumpet solo, lyrical strong moments for brass Percussion provides color at the beginning in contrast with the flute solo, percussion featured 91-end. Comfortable ranges of the instruments, comfortable keys, very lyrical piece with some challenging moments, lots of opportunities for solos 9Takahashi, Katelyn

6/20/2020 16:33:52Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, NoveltyBassoon solo!A little boring. But perhaps a great piece when you have a weak brass section. Trumpet solo!Beautiful mallet parts! More percussion contribution than normal for a lyrical piece like this. Need a good vibe player.Beautiful melody and lush harmonies throughout.6Ferrell, Trey

6/20/2020 16:33:56Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Contest
Flute/Oboe/Clarinet opening - very Irish. Very nice flute solo - not too long or difficult, right in the sweet spot. Bassoon has some melody at the beginning as well that can easily get over powered by what the clarinets are doing. The grace note flip thing that shows up in Irish music can get kind of tricky to do ON the beat. Really great opportunities to broadcast the strength of the woodwind choir and individual players within your band.
Brass choir is definitely not the most prominent thing at the beginning. The trumpet solo is beautiful - great opportunity to develop some soloist skills! Horn lines sounds like butter between the ww and brass choirs. Horns and low brass choir have a great moment with the focus - very lush smooth and connected.
There is quite a bit of exposed activity in the orchestra bells at the beginning of this song. Timpani helps drive through crescendos and some ritardandos - keeps the energy moving forward with a roll. Vibes have a similar role over the oboe solo - then has a solo all it's own not soon after.
The woodwind choir does a lot of the work, as does the mallet percussion. The brass are definitely a beautiful color and have some lush moment to themselves. The percussion felt supportive. Intonation and phrasing/shaping would be a wonderful thing to work on through this chart.

6/20/2020 16:33:59Parting Glass, TheFolkThis piece has a lot of challenges for the WW choir in terms of the level of independence of each part. There are a lot of non-repeating patterns in the 8th note runs and exposed lines. The brass writing is thick and also features at least three or four different lines at times. There will be a challenge in balancing and adjusting.Percussion writing is very light, and the woodwind parts are not written in a way that lends well to doubling on mallets. This would need a mature section that could handle waiting around. This arrangement is very thickly scored and has many complex elements to it that would require a strong and independent ensemble. This is not something you should play with a middle school group.3Gresham, Adam
48
6/20/2020 16:34:00Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceSolo flute and oboe to begin with. M. 68 16th/32nd note runs can be challenging. Trumpet soloist at m. 51. Great horn and baritone parts. Bells and vibraphone exposed parts at the very beginning with woodwind soloists. The piece ends with percussion. Nice piece to briefly spotlight soloists. Nice use of meter changes. I like how the piece ends with percussion. 5Samson, Eric

6/20/2020 16:34:00Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Solo/Soli FeatureFlute solo at the beginning
Oboe solo not doubled anywhere else
Bassoon and euphonium duet for the first round of melody
1st clarinet solo
Many flowing clarinet eighth notes
Brass doesn't do much for the first part of the song, eventually the horns come in
Trumpet solo
1st trombone goes up to at least an Eb
Euphonium goes up to at least a G
Doesn't play as a big of a role in this song as in other songs
Vibraphone solo (with pedal)
Need confident mallets players because of the first 35 measures
Besides the mallets, the rest of the percussion parts aren't too difficult
Features soloists and the mallets players
Ends in a pensive way which makes you wonder if it's really done
Most notes are eighth notes or longer. Really only the woodwinds and percussion get any sixteenth notes, and even those are just for part of the song and note too fast

6/20/2020 16:34:02Parting Glass, TheContestFlute and oboe solos, difficult timing issues, bassoon needed (cued in Euph), difficult 16th. note passages, oboe not cuedChordal, interesting low brass parts, trumpet solo, role definition necessary, 4 Timpani, 5 other percussionists, light responsibilities in batterie, Mallet parts important and follow woodwind patterns! Pedaling and mallet suggestions!!!Great change of pace in this piece. Intonation and phrasing very important. Lotos of interplay between sections, low brass/reeds get some of the melodic material!!7Bruington, Andrew
51
6/20/2020 16:34:05Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceDifficulty - moving eighth note lines in time and not dragging for the clarinets. Knowing when to phrase and breathe. Technical passage at 68 is in unison so you can work on it together.Opportunity for a trumpet soloist, however exposed so need to make sure embouchure is set before. Low brass have the opportunity to sustain notes, but also play different rhythms.Features the mallet percussion for once.Great piece to work on dynamics and phrasing.8Panini, Angela
52
6/20/2020 16:34:21Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, Novelty, Solo/Soli FeatureShort flute solo starts us off, very exposed, highlighted with only a little percussion and eventually an oboe before the remainder of the band joins in. Clarinets explore the entire low register. Moving part at m.68 has a lot of articulation to be aware of.Baritone featured melody towards the beginning. Make sure they aren't overshadowed by ensemble. Trumpet solo covers a lot of range.Very sparse percussion - mostly bells and vibes, some smattering of auxiliary instruments. Easy to miss entrances unless players are maintaining focus.
Lots of consonant harmonies to keep in tune, but not a lot of dissonance. Generally a good piece to get the ensemble listening to one another for intonation and dynamics! Nice inclusion of the "Scottish Snap" to be able to talk about cultural differences between Irish and Scottish music!

6/20/2020 16:34:23Parting Glass, TheLyrical Flute solo, oboe solo, clarinets have large leaps at measure 8 - fingers need to move at the same time to avoid flubs. Woodwinds at 68 - keep staccato notes light and move fingers in time with each other. Tuba has an active part with 16th/dotted 8th rhythms at the beginning! Trumpet range is up above the staff. Bell part is exposed using hard mallets, vibraphone solo at the end.Well written piece to allow students to explore playing more musically. 7Mack, Regan

Bells solo followed by vibes solo, neither too technically difficult. In the key of F and Bflat.9Maupoux, Nick

6/20/2020 16:34:24Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceHaunting flute solo in the beginning that is joined in by oboe and then clarinet. Strong bassoon in the beginning with clarinet playing underneath. Big full section. 32nd and 16th note section for flute and clarinet. Alto plays cool horn line. Exposed oboe solo later followed by clarinet. Brass rests for quite a while at the beginning but then comes in strong. Trumpet has a solo that clarinet echoes. Cool horn line that sounds very majestic. Good piece for playing quiet and lyrical then building really big and majestic. Bells at the beginning to reinforce melody. Suspended cymbal adds to the band quite a bit. Bells come back in with a interesting countermelody. Bells have a solo then vibraphone ends the entire piece playing solo. Several solos throughout this piece. Also has a few time changes. Lots of majestic lines with thick texture. Great for playing lyrically and working on dynamic changes. Beautiful song. 7Cottom, Kristen

6/20/2020 16:34:25Parting Glass, TheOpener, Contest, CloserVery nice flute solo to start! Woodwinds be carful not to play too loudly through the end of soft phrases. Try a dovetailed approach to your dynamics. Oboe soloist & clarinet soloist, great work!Brass nice sound! Be carful at the ends of phrases to not over play. Bells are very strong. Good! Follow dynamics to piano also. Vibe, make sure you strike the center if the bar. The sound is a little dampened. Work on diminuendos band. Good sounds throughout! 7Rodriguez, Jose

6/20/2020 16:34:36Parting Glass, TheChange of Pace, ContestThere is a flute and oboe solo in the beginning accompanied by bells and vibraphone. Bassoon solo follows. There's some tricky upper woodwind fast articulation from measures 68-77. Thinly scored oboe solo feature with clarinet towards the end of the piece. For the most part, brass takes a back seat to the woodwinds when it comes to melody in this piece. 5 written parts, Percussion minus the vibraphone and bells rests for the whole first section of the piece. Piece ends softly with vib player. Beautiful slow piece. We need to play with great intonation and connected phrases. 7Schroeder, Jenna

Difficulties -- challenging rhythmic passages for clarinet (fingering), tough low notes for alto saxophones to play quietly
Strengths -- challenges them to stretch their ranges
Difficulties -- need strong tuba and baritone players, range can be difficult and high
Strengths -- enough percussion parts for everyone to cover even with a small section
Difficulties -- lots of bell work that can get very challenging at m. 68

6/20/2020 16:35:34Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceThere is a flute solo, an oboe solo (with no cues), and a 1st clarinet solo. The flutes and clarinets have a background part that includes a repeated rhythm of two 32nd notes with three 16th notes. There is a 1st trumpet solo. The trombone range goes up to an F4. The bells and vibes part includes a lot of notes, and there are some doubles where two notes must be played at the same time. This would be a great piece for working on four-mallet technique. There are also some grace notes. This piece is beautiful. The key changes from D minor to G minor. The meter changes between ¾, 4/4, and 2/4. Intonation will need to be worked on. There are many contrary dynamics; students must play what is written and not rely on their ears.10DiMento, Jenna

6/20/2020 16:38:32Parting Glass, TheChange of PaceFlute solo entrance followed by Oboe. Lots of moving figures and phrases throughout. Need a solid bassoon for m. 12. Cl solo. M. 68 and on will be a challenging section or the upper WW. Oboe solo Trumpet solo. M. 68 is important to be heard and dominant, but brass will need to work to not cover up the WW.Exposed vibe part at the beginning. Some challenging passages for vibes and bells at m. 68. Wonderful percussion sounds and vibe melodic content at the end.Balance and blend within the band could be a challenge. Work towards hearing the melody and counter melodies, but don'10Hust, Joshua
