6 January 2018A good movement of Pink-footed Geese this morning with c900 heading west in seven skeins. Four more were ‘down’ with Greylags.Fairly quiet otherwise with 11 Gadwall, Water Rail and 2 Grey Wagtails.

7 January 20184 Pinkfeet with the Greylags still, 13 Gadwall, 144 Teal, 8 Tufteds, drake Goldeneye, drake Goosander, Water Rail, 198 Lapwings, 2 Redpolls. A walk behind the dam produced the expected Tree Sparrow on the feeders, though just one, with a singing Dipper on the river. The gull roost was busy, often the case on Sundays, producing the first ‘white-winger’ of the winter in the form of a second-winter Iceland Gull. Previous reports of an adult Glaucous now confirmed as a subtle hybrid.

9 January 201713 Gadwall, 3 Goldeneye, 5 GCGrebes, a Dunlin came out of Chapel Bay with Lapwings and flew SE at 1110, a Goshawk was seen in Brackenfield again plus a Willow Tit on the West Bank.

13 January 2018Mute Swan briefly, 3 Shelduck arrived at 1145, 9 Gadwall, 88 Teal (quite a reduction), 13 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 5 C.Buzzards included one feeding on a dead Gull on the west bank, c 400 Lapwings, c50 Snipe were put up off the west bank by the Buzzard, 2 Grey Wags, c60 Linnets still, 3 Redpolls, 2 Siskins.

14 January 2018Mute Swan, just 3 Greylags, c15 Mandarins flew through NW in one group with a single soon after, 8 Gadwall, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, Water Rail under the feeders, 2 Sparrowhawks, 2 Grey Wagtails and c50 Linnets.

15 January 2018In poor conditions this morning 2 Gadwall, 3 Goldeneye, 5 Goosanders, just 1 GCGrebe and 2 Little Grebes, c50 Linnets with a Redpoll. Later in the afternoon 3 Whooper Swans were reported.

16 January 2018116 Teal, 43 Mallard, 8 Gadwall, just 5 Tufteds, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, 6 Coots, 5 Moorhens, Water Rail, fem Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, a juvenile Goshawk hammered across Chapel Bay at 1025 putting up all the Gulls and Lapwings-the fourth record this year already, Barn Owl, 2 Ravens, 2 Willow Tits and c20 Fieldfares.

14 February 201851 Canadas, 55 Greylags and single Pinkfoot, 8 Gadwall, 16 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 7 Goosander, 2 Oystercatchers, 256 Lapwings, a Knot came in at 1100 in a snow flurry and briefly landed on the ice in the centre of the reservoir; only the second February record here of a bird that has become less frequent despite good coverage, a single record last year (summer adult on 19 Jul) was the first since Nov 2014. Rare in spring/winter, most records are between Aug and Nov (usually singles with a best of three on 20 Sep 1989), an adult Herring Gull with a yellow colour-ring on the left leg was too distant unfortunately, 5 Common Gulls, c80 Linnets.

Better in the afternoon though with 4 Goosanders, the first Curlew, a Crossbill over and at least 2 Mealy Redpolls with c7 Lesser Redpolls by the Public Hide.

2 March 2018My first visit since Tuesday due to the weather, roads passable with care, don’t know if anyone’s been down? A big clear out of Lapwings, increase in Canada Geese, Snipe on view in the snow and a nice little bonus with two pairs of Pintail. Totals as follows; 3 Mute Swans, 137 Canada and 22 Greylag Geese, 4 Pintail in Chapel Bay, 2 Gadwall, 11 Tufteds, 2 Pochard, 2 Goldeneye, drake Goosander, 7 GCGrebes, 2 Oystercatchers, 6 Lapwings-with a dead one in front of the Member’s Hide, 26 Common Snipe, ad Yellow-legged Gull, a Willow Tit and still c50 Linnets. A single Meadow Pipit out on the west bank was literally blown over by the strong  ENE wind.

4 March 2018Thick fog hampered viewing today with the water barely visible. A drake Pintail loomed into view briefly, 2 Oystercatchers, 5 Lapwings, 24 Snipe right of the Public Hide, 2 Fieldfares in the car park and several Redwings in Alders Wood with a particularly tame, weak bird by the path. Thankfully today proved to be the last day of the freeze.

5 March 20185 Pintail (3 drakes) on the west bank, 4 Gadwall, 5 Tufteds, 6 Goldeneye, 11 Goosander, 9 GC and 1 Little Grebe, 2 Buzzards, Sparrowhawk, 2 Oystercatchers, very few Lapwings, a Curlew through, an adult winter Little Gull off the car park  for 10 minutes at 1535 then into Chapel Bay (first since one 12 May 2016), a Raven, a Willow Tit, a stonking male Hawfinch in the churchyard (I saw the photo) and c50 Linnets still. A good day.

13 March 2018An interesting day with Chiffchaffs (two) and a single Sand Martin being  the first of the summer visitors to arrive. Also an adult Kittiwake briefly at around 1230, right on cue, and four Hawfinches in the churchyard. Also 12 Mandarins, 16 Gadwall (most so far this year), 4 Tufteds, 10 Goosander, 2 GCGrebes and 1 Little Grebe, 9 Buzzards, 2 Sparrowhawks, 3 Kestrels, 6 Oystercatchers, 2 Curlews flew NNW, c60 Linnets, 4 Redpolls and 2 Siskins on the feeders.

16 March 201820 Mandarins, 14 Gadwall, 4 Pintail circled 1620-25 then flew SE, 5 Tufteds, 2 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, 2 GCGrebes, 4 Oystercatchers, a Little Ringed Plover circled then SE at 1030-the first of the year, a Dunlin through at 0950, 1 Raven, 1 Chiffchaff singing, 2 Willow Tits and3 Mealy Redpolls still.

17 March 20188 Gadwall, 3 Tufteds, fem Goldeneye, 7 Curlews, 1stW Yellow-legged Gull in the roost, a Rock Pipit in front of the hides ( first of the year, less regular in spring than late autumn; October being the classic month), Crossbills heard over the car park but not seen, c80 Linnets and a Mealy Redpoll still.

18 March 2018129 Canada and 15 Greylag Geese, 3 Mandarins, 16 Gadwall, 5 Tufteds, 4 Goldeneye, 6 Goosander, 2 GCGrebes, single Sparrowhawk and Kestrel, 2 Buzzards, 4 Oystercatchers, 17 Lapwings, 2 Curlews, 8 Snipe, 26 Common Gulls, a Chiffchaff, 2 Willow Tits, 7 Meadow Pipits 10 Reed Buntings. One of two Redwings behind the hides had missing feathers on the nape and mantle and a drooped right wing suggesting a close encounter with a predator of some sort, despite this and the weather it had found a snow free patch besides a fallen log and was throwing leaf litter around with some gusto and pecking away at the exposed invertebrates, living in the moment. Birds are incredible.

19 March 201835 Whooper Swans in total this morning, 26 flew NW at 0940 while nine more were on the reservoir, these finally departing north at 1817. Also 5 Mandarins, 4+ Gadwall, 3 Wigeon, 5 Tufteds, 4 Goldeneye, 2 Goosander, ad Peregrine, 2 Oystercatchers, 16 Lapwings, 9 Curlews late afternoon, 11 Common Gulls. The injured Redwing still alive and kicking around the feeding station.

Still a fair gull roost for this late in the season; in basic size order 160 GBBGulls, 418 Herring Gulls, 113 LBBGulls, 16 Common Gulls and c750 BHGulls.

5 April 2018Highlight was two Mediterranean Gulls soaring high over the reservoir 1015-35, unfortunately they didn’t land but as last year was the first blank year since the 1980’s they were well received. Also 2 ad Common and several groups of Black-headed Gulls through, 3 Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, 2 Curlews through, quite a few Buzzards up and 3/4 Sparrowhawks, Raven, 10+ of Sand Martins and Swallows and a single House Martin, 2 Willow Tits and 6 Chiffchaffs.

18 April 2018A Little Tern arrived at 0900 and performed well in front of the car park, being present up to 1500 at least. This is the 27th record for Ogston and the earliest by seven days. Also a Mute Swan, 6+ Mandarins, 4+ Gadwall, 14 Tufteds, fem Goldeneye, 4 Oystercatchers, LRPlover through, Common Sand on the dam wall, a Common Tern briefly around 0920, 4 Willow Tits included two singing birds, 5 Willow Warblers, 7 Chiffchaffs, 2/3 Blackcaps, Lesser Whitethroat in the car park area and 2 Bramblings flew south.
