Statement of Purpose
51
Please briefly outline the overall aims of the programme. This should clarify to a prospective student why they should choose this programme, what it will provide to them and what benefits they will gain from completing it.
52
Understanding societies and cultures in their diversity, and the ability to engage, communicate and interact with people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds is a key asset in the 21st century.
All our language programmes put the interdependence of language and culture at their core. They combine an in-depth study of cultural and social phenomena and practices of communities and territories where the languages of study are spoken, including their transnational and diasporic manifestations, with the development of sophisticated plurilingual communication skills. You will engage in research, critical analysis, and evaluation of a broad range of issues linked to the languages and cultures of study, and you will learn to identify, and use the appropriate linguistic resources for effective oral and written communication.
You will experience designing, planning and completing a range of projects involving individual as well as collaborative work. You will engage in reflective tasks which will allow you to better articulate the acquired knowledge, to identify and select resources, and to develop advanced learning strategies, key transferable skills and attributes.
The year abroad will enable you to develop rapidly in fluency and communicative proficiency in the language(s) of study, and to gain first hand experiences of inter- and transculturality. You will also develop attributes and transferable skills, such as adaptability, resilience, and resourcefulness, which will empower you to engage confidently in transcultural encounters.
The combination of these analytic, transcultural, and communicative competencies ensures that you are a highly sought-after graduate who can operate in international, transcultural, and multilingual professional environments in both public and private sectors. This skill set will open the door to many different careers, ranging from jobs in language teaching, translation and interpreting, to finance, sales and marketing, as well as tourism, the public sector, and broadcasting, journalism, and international relations.
