(harmful to minors) and depicts or describes sexual conduct. As such, the material will be reviewed by a District Literacy Council.

Meeting Information:

Location: RBELC, 1st Floor Conference Room A

8.31.2026 Update: The District Literacy Council reviewed the book, By the Time You Read This I’ll be Dead by Julie Anne Peters and recommended retaining the material in OCPS high school media centers.
Using the OCPS Literacy Council Guiding Checklist and the Florida statutes as a guide, the council discussed that the author’s purpose was to provide the perspective of a teenager who is experiencing difficulties and contemplating suicide. Committee members debated the book's content, specifically regarding suicide, balancing concerns about appropriate maturity levels with the potential for the story to connect with and support students in need. The book includes resources for additional support for students who are experiencing mental health concerns.

5.4.26 Update: “The District Literacy Council reviewed the book, The Beats: A Graphic History by Harvey Pekar and recommended retaining the material in OCPS media centers, but restrict circulation to Junior and Senior-level students.

Using the OCPS Literacy Council Guiding Checklist for the Review of Media Center Materials of Other Reading Materials as a guide, the council discussed the purpose and the content of the book. The council believes that the purpose of the book was to inform the reader of the Beat poet generation and the cultural revolution of these literary artists of the post World War II era. Presented as a comprehensive overview with multiple points of view and reflected writing styles of these poets, this title provides a resource on a topic that is currently limited in library media collections. Due to the portrayal of some of the unsavory aspects and behaviors shown by the authors within the story of their lives, it is recommended that this title is retained to Junior and Seniors for circulation. The council concluded that it would not motivate students to emulate the behavior of the artists as it was told as a cautionary tale. The text has literary, artistic, and historic value for Juniors and Seniors, where the Beat poet era is introduced in the high school curriculum and Advanced Studies programs."

5.27.26 Update: The School Board Level Request for Reconsideration will take place at the July 28, 2026, school board meeting.

7.30.26 Update: The School Board accepted the District Literacy Council recommendation to retain The Beats By Harvey Pekar for 11th and 12th grade students.

11.07.2025 Update: “The District Literacy Council reviewed the book, Do Animals Fall in Love? by Katharine von der Gathen, on November 7, 2025, and recommended retaining the book for middle school.

Using the OCPS Literacy Council Guiding Checklist for the Review of Media Center Materials of Other Reading Materials as a guide, the council discussed the purpose and the content of the book. The council stated throughout the discussion that they believe this book’s content does not violate state statutes as it is written. The purpose of the material is to educate and inform readers of the entire span of animal reproduction. The 6th and 7th-grade science standards require students to learn about animal reproduction (SC.6.L.15 & SC.7.L.16.4).

The content of the title is factual for readers. The illustrations are scientifically accurate, and the book does not contain photographs that could be considered harmful to minors, as defined in the statutes. The statute refers to human sexual behavior and not animals.”

09.12.2025 Update: School Literacy Council voted to retain the material. " The council recommends to retain the material. This decision was based on the fact that the book is age/grade level appropriate, activities for use align with state standards, and the concepts are thought provoking and challenging. Both students and teachers find the book engaging and it allows for a wide range of discussion opportunities. The book is not obscene nor does it contain pornography. The council also shared that the book has won numerous awards and was also a Florida Teen Read’s Choice book."
