Overview:
13
Strengths:Notes:
14
Wide-9While this is usually a strong suite for guys under 250lbs, Murphy has a greater impact when he can take an extra step before contact. With his acceleration in combination with his size, he gets pressures reliably from wide-9.
15
Closing SpeedIf he gets past the lineman on a passing play, he usually closes. His burst towards the quarterback as well as straight-line speed are impressive, especially for his size.
16
Raw AthleticismHis size-speed-strength combination is unnatural. He has decent bend around the outside, and wins rather frequently when he uses speed as opposed to strength. If he can work on translating his weight room strength to the field and refines his technique, then he could be one of the best defensive ends in the league.
17
18
Weaknesses:Notes:
19
Hand StrengthHand placement and strength are both areas where Murphy must improve if he is to find success at the next level. He often appears as if his hands are not really doing anything effective whatsoever when he rushes the passer.
20
First Step PowerHis first step is quick off the line, but it does not have a ton of power. His second step is where he generates most of his power. This limits his effectiveness greatly when lining up inside of the tackles.
21
Pass Rush VersatilityMurphy does not really have any refined pass rush moves. His speed rush around the outside is solid, and his bull rush from out wide is effective, but he needs to develop more moves so that he does not get locked down by one lineman as he so frequently does.

Game:Takeaways:
25
North Carolina (12/03/2022)Strong athlete in double team. Good first step, but pops up too quickly. Questionable pass rush move, trying to cut inside while staying upright without violent hands. Hands placement is consistently sloppy. Consistently first off the line. Could have more bend on outside moves. Bull rush not very effective. Held up by single lineman frequently. Quick feet for big man with good acceleration. Getting consistently pushed around. Does not look like he is playing with much motor. Great bull rush off the edge. Better hand placement on tackle required guard help. Manhandled by center. Not great run defense. Extremely effective when he keeps his hands strong. Elite get-off. Does not do much from the inside. First step is quick, but second step is noticeably stronger. Does not pull away from blocks well, which is also a result from his soft hands. Despite having great efficiency with his footwork through B-gap, he needs a lot of coaching on what to do with his upper body. Good power into double team. Good technique on tackle. False step. Good agility.
26
Syracuse (10/22/2022)Poor angle on pursuit. Excellent get-off and motor to get the sack. Not the best motor on run defense. Powerful from wide-9. Not great instincts on run defense. Much better from outside than inside. Very low success rate when trying to cut back inside after initially taking the edge. Unsure how to handle lineman pushing him laterally on slant. Not successful if first move does not work. Weak hands on most plays. Not effective in run defense. Needs just a bit more strength on some moves for his playstyle. He is very strong, but does not seem to use his strength effectively. Gets pushed back on run play. Does not have many pass rush moves in his arsenal. Good rip, but could have been more sudden. Quick first step, but stopped in his tracks by right tackle. Good motor to earn the sack. Good athleticism in pursuit. Frequently mitigated by a single offensive lineman. Taken out of run plays. Decent bull rush. No contest for running backs in pass protection. Genuinely has no idea how to use hands when getting held up by a single offensive lineman.
27
Florida State (10/15/2022)Good rip, but ran right past the ball carrier. Free into backfield, ran right by ball carrier again from choosing the wrong guy. Gets overzealous when he is free in the backfield and speeds up with little control. Good angle to retreat across the field to the ball carrier. Excellent closing speed. Held up by left tackle. Good patience on run play to opposite side. Good speed around left tackle. Great closing burst. Locked up by tight end. Good patience again on scramble. Great speed around the edge. Locked up again by tackle. Excellent bull rush when keeping pads low. Gives up when first move does not work. Stands up too quickly on most plays. Attempted sort of a pseudo-swim move. Committing would have been more effective. Fast first step when unblocked. Seems to play harder in more crucial situations. Very powerful second step.

Alignment
30
A-GapRarely shoots the A-gap, but typically ineffective when doing so.
31
B-GapHIs lack of power derived from his first step in combination with weaker hands cause him to get held up when rushing from the inside.
32
4/5-TechMurphy is built to play 4-3 defensive end. His athleticism, size, and speed allow him to win taking the outside against tackles.
33
EdgeRushing from the wing is one of his strong suits. Once he gains two steps in the open, his mass becomes very difficult to stop. That said, he has very few reps, if any, where he drops back into coverage. He is better built to play defensive end than outside linebacker in any capacity.
34
35
Attributes (at a glance):Grade / 10:Notes:
36
AttributesBend7For his size, Murphy has great bend. In a vacuum, this grade may be lower, but a 7/10 is fair given that he weighs 276lbs. He is good at winning when he rushes using speed on the outside, but he can still work on how to use the tackle's positioning to increase bend and effectiveness rushing outside.
37
Burst8.5He has shown an incredible amount off bust inconsistently. The ability is there, but this grade is generous for what he has shown on tape. He lacks the first step power to be effective up the middle, but he has also demonstrated that he is capable of producing that power from when he accelerates abruptly in pursuit. His high-end reps also indicate that this grade could increase, but he needs to be more consistent with his release.
38
Motor7The lack of motor stems from effort in some plays. This could be a 10/10 given his conditioning, but he usually is ineffective on a play if his first move does not work.
39
SkillsetPass Rush7Again, this grade could be significantly higher given his athleticism, but he lacks effective pass rush moves. His hands hinder him more than help him, and he typically does not make it past one move. He also tends to bring his pads up early and lose all leverage right away. Good coaching would do absolute wonders to his pass rush prowess.
40
Run Defense4Usually taken out of run plays. This may also be amplified from the Clemson scheme where they rely on Simpson and Trotter to gap shoot, but he still has not shown much in run defense.
41
CoverageNANot part of his primary skillset. Dropped back occasionally, but was not targeted. In games observed.
42
HandsPlacement3It is difficult to determine his tendencies because his hand placement is so sporadic. With some coaching on consistency and technique, this grade should increase quickly.
43
Effectiveness2This is the worst part of his game. If his hands can become just a bit more effective, than his tape would be otherworldly. His draft stock is so high because of all of the "what ifs" in his game. If his hands became more violent with better placement and overall technique, then people would be talking about Murphy as a surefire thing in the NFL.
44
Quickness6His hands are quick, but effective quickness is difficult to assess when they are useless on so many plays.
45
Line ControlStrength5.5This is deceptive because he is a weight room freak. Murphy is very strong for the position in theory, but shows little play strength most of the time. He is held up by one lineman frequently, and even tight ends on occasion. Pad level contributes to this because he has shown a great bull rush when staying low, but it is very inconsistent. He has the raw strength in the weight room, but needs to work on translating it to the field.
46
Balance8.5Great overall balance, but he can learn to use this more to his advantage.
47
Pass-Rush DecisionsVersatility3Murphy has no consistent pass rush moves. His bull rush is effective when he commits and does not pop up too soon, and he is good at taking the outside, but he shows little ability to succeed inside and does not have many moves in his arsenal.
48
Technique4There are flashes here and there, but Murphy needs to learn better technique if he wants to succeed in the NFL.
49
Execution5He still has decent production despite his overall poor technique. His draft stock is as high as it is because if he actually develops legitimate technique, his pass rush win rate could skyrocket.
50
TraitsAgility7.5Good lateral acceleration. He needs to learn how to use this more to his advantage.
51
Athleticism10Freak athlete. This is why his draft stock is up inside the top 10. At 6'5" 276lbs, he reportedly runs a 4.57 40-yard-dash. His weight room numbers are impressive, and he has nearly 34" arms. Murphy is built to be a stud in the NFL. Likely the best combination of speed, size, and strength in class.
52
Length833.5" arms are good for the position. This is not outstanding, but more than serviceable with his height.

Final Scouting Report:
55
Myles Murphy is considered by many to be a top 5 non-quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft class, but his tape is far from polished. He has a low pass rush win rate for any potential first round edge, and he is taken out of nearly every run play. He gets stopped in his tracks in one-on-one situations with a tackle far too often for comfort, and has very poor pass rush moves. His hand placement is inconsistent, and he has surprisingly poor play strength. The only reason Murphy may be drafted early is because he is a freakish athlete.

He weighs 276lbs, but plays like he is 30lbs lighter. His movement skills at that size are unbelievable. He came out of high school as one of the top recruits in the nation, and could allegedly bench press 275lbs as a 14-year-old freshman in high school. Murphy has always been an outlier athlete, but he will have to rely on more than his athleticism alone if he is to succeed in the NFL. He needs to improve his technique in all facets of the game. His footwork, hand placement/strength, and actually developing an arsenal of legitimate pass rush moves will be essential to his success. If he gains a bit more play strength and learns technique from a good NFL coach, then he is easily worthy of a top 10 pick. As it stands on tape, he has shown very little that would elicit a first round grade from anyone who has not researched his background.
56
57
Projections:
58
LikelyMurphy will likely go inside of the top 10. He will be thrust into a role where his production will be low year one, almost to the point of being a liability. After two or three seasons accrued, he will become one of the better pass rushers in the NFL.
59
OptimalHe will have the most success if he is drafted to a team who can use him sparingly throughout year one. His role will be as a rotational pass rusher where he can put all of his effort into a few plays, and at the same time learn technique throughout the season. He will develop quickly, and become a full time starter in year two.
60
Pro ComparisonTravon Walker. Myles Murphy is a slightly worse physical specimen to Walker with better overall college production.
