ELL6Scaffolds and Differentiation: Building Knowledge and Making a DifferenceEffective instruction relies not just on delivering information, but on how it's tailored and structured to meet the diverse needs of learners. Scaffolding, the practice of guiding learners to new levels of understanding through strategic teacher support, is integral to ensuring comprehension and skill acquisition. On the other hand, differentiation, the process of adjusting teaching methods to meet individual learning styles and capabilities, enables instructors to make learning more accessible and meaningful for all participants, regardless of their backgrounds or skill levels.

This IN-PERSON workshop offers you a practical exploration of how scaffolding and differentiating strategies can be used effectively to enhance adult learning experiences. After collaborating to define and distinguish between the techniques, you will dive into a variety of instructional scaffolds and explore the three basic types of differentiation. As a proof of learning task, you’ll have the opportunity to apply the session content by considering scenarios and materials related to your instructional situations in order to determine which scaffolds to employ and how best to differentiate to meet the diverse needs of your adult learners.

LexingtonMath6ANN: Mathematical Play and AgencyYou can't break math, so let's play with it! Adult math learners often have built up negative ideas about who does math, and what it means to do math. Embracing play as appropriate for math class allows adult students to change their relationship with math- to write a new, powerful, and happy chapter in their math stories. (This can happen for teachers too!) Students who learn new concepts partially or wholly through play have strong conceptual understanding and are able to make connections between concepts and apply their learning across many contexts.Dee Crescitelli

2024.10.18LouisvilleMath6Will This Be on the Test?Standardized multiple-choice tests cannot accurately aim to measure mastery of mathematics. Rather, these types of test primarily measure one thing: Mathematical reasoning. It is this reasoning that students use to become mathematical thinkers outside of the classroom, not acquisition of hard skills. How can we cultivate attitudes and practice that will lead to our math students moving away from calculation machines and to being critical problem-solvers?Sarah Longberg-Lew
