|The Book of Hosea of the Caribbean|
A reminder that one good deed is enough to redeem a man from a lifetime of wickedness. But it takes faith-ing.
In captain Barbosa and his crew we see a picture of Ephraim - the kingdom of Israel (10 northern tribes) - who had left Yahweh and played the harlot with other gods.
Hosea is one of the great (though called “minor") prophets sent to deliver God’s warning and promise of destruction to Ephraim, together with the promise of forgiveness and a resurrected marriage to Him. “You are not My people, but in that day you shall be called My people.”
But here is the rub: They had to repent and return. Barbosa and his crew never do and thus experience the second, eternal (in quality) death.
I think Jack Sparrow was in that same predicament but chose life by dying to self when he took the coin (thus the curse) as a symbol of dying to self through sharing in the suffering of Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 1:6; 2:14-15; 2 Thessalonians 1:4).
|Hosea 4:1-2 NASB|
Listen to the word of the Lord, O sons of Israel,
For the Lord has a case against the inhabitants of the land,
Because there is no faithfulness or kindness
Or knowledge of God in the land.
There is swearing, deception, murder, stealing and adultery.
They employ violence, so that bloodshed follows bloodshed.
Hosea 4:10-13a NASB
They will eat, but not have enough;
They will play the harlot, but not increase,
Because they have stopped giving heed to the Lord.
Hosea 6:1 NASB
“Come, let us return to the Lord.
For He has torn us, but He will heal us;
He has wounded us, but He will bandage us.
Hosea 14:1 NASB
Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God,
For you have stumbled because of your iniquity.
Hosea 14:4 NASB
I will heal their apostasy,
I will love them freely,
For My anger has turned away from them.
Isaiah 53:5 NASB
But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
And by His scourging we are healed.
|SOUND BITE 1 |
I hardly believe in ghost stories anymore, captain Barbosa. | Aye. That’s exactly what I thought when we were first told the tale. Buried on an island of the dead what cannot be found, except for those who know where it is. Find it we did. There be the chest. Inside be the gold. We took ‘em all! We spent ‘em and traded ‘em and flittered ‘em away on drink and food and pleasurable company. The more we gave ‘em away, the more we came to realize the drink would not satisfy. Food turned to ash in our mouths, and all the pleasurable company in the world could not slake our lust. We are cursed men, miss Turner.
SOUND BITE 2
Who among us has paid the blood sacrifice owed to the heathen gods? And who’s blood much yet be paid? | Hers! | You know the first thing I’m gonna do after the curse is lifted? Eat a whole bushel of apples. | Blood. Blood. Blood. Blood… | Begun by blood. By blood undone.
SOUND BITE 3
Did it work? | I don’t feel no different. How do we tell? | *gun shot* | You’re not dead! | No. You shot me! | It didn’t work. | The curse is still upon us!
SOUND BITE 4
One good deed is not enough to redeem a man from a lifetime of wickedness
|Wherever Will Turner Is, There Kindness Will Be Also|
Will is an example of kindess, especially Jack Sparrow
-- Freed him from prison.
At the end of all things, Jack has found himself in Will Turner's favor...kindness...once again.
Jack - as the captstone of a pirate's life - stands condemned.
Will Turner doesn't take his punishment for him, but his kindness here plants a seed that we see grow throughout the series.
|Romans 2:4 NLT|
Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
|SFX #1: 2:07:55|
I thought we may have to endure some manner of ill-conceived escape attempt, but not from you. | On our return to Port Royal, I granted you clemency. And this is how you thank me? By throwing in your lot with him? He's a pirate.
SFX #2: (following)
And a good man. If all I ever achieve here is that I earn the hangman two pairs of boots instead of one, then so be it. At least my conscience will be clear. | You forget your place, Will Turner. | It's right here, between you and Jack.
