Dis/Orienting Asian Canada
Credits: 3ISHIGURO, LAURA
The histories, cultures, social dynamics, and life experiences of Asian communities in Canada in the context of global migrations. Restricted to students with second year status or higher.
N/A
What do Asian Canadian histories have to do with the present? What good can historical knowledge, understanding, and thinking do now? Driven by these questions, ACAM 300 is an Asian Canadian history course for our times. We will explore how Asian Canadian histories are portrayed and used in a range of contexts today from scholarship and textbooks to political apologies and media coverage, from films and museum exhibits to community festivals and family stories. We will consider what role these diverse historical representations play in the present. And we will develop our own ideas about what other histories need to be told about people of Asian descent in northern North America, and explore how and why we might do so. Overall, you can expect to learn about some important topics in Asi&~ an Canadian history; understand why these histories and how they are told matter today; build skills related to digital and ethical community-engaged historical work; and, in the process, contribute to histories that can make a difference in our times.

Students may complete the course either in-person or asynchronously/remotely. Please contact acam. program@ubc. ca for more details.

Asian/North American Digital Life
This course examines Asian/North American digital life as the shifting intersections between Asian racialization and information technologies. We will link questions about migration, new media networks, and digital selves to the ongoing projects of settler colonialism and empire. These inquiries will be illuminated through critical analyses of race, gender, and sexuality and by drawing from relevant fields of study, including critical race, new media, and Asian North American studies. In addition to reading scholarship from these fields, students will have the opportunity to engage films, TV, digital media, literature, music, and other cultural productions.

Post-Apartheid South African Literature: It was easier to write about the past . . . because the past created ready-made stories. There was a very clear demarcation between good and evil . . . Black was good; white was bad. Your conflict was there. There were no gray areas. We no longer have that. In this new situation, black is not necessarily good. There are many black culprits; there are many good white people. We have become normal. Its very painful to become normal. ( Zakes Mda) Fifty years of oppression under the South African apartheid system inspired an impressive corpus of protest literature, but how have writers responded to the collapse of the racist regime and its replacement with a democratic constitution? Our study of recent South African writing will include Zakes Mdas The Heart of Redness, Phaswane Mpes Welcome to Our Hillbrow, Kapano Matlawas Coconut and Sello Diukers Thirteen Cents.
