3
Will online learning be offered for families who want to keep their children home? After assessing our first two weeks of Distance Learning (DL), we are finalizing the program and would like to announce the following changes for students who have symptoms or need to isolate for a short period of time (up to 14 days). Students who enrolled into the full-time (long-term) DL program in August will continue with the program currently in place.

In Elementary:
During the first three days of absence, students will receive the regular homework and parents can contact the teachers by email as usual, if needed. Students who need to isolate for a longer period of time will be able to access specific activities on Seesaw after the third day, and may be invited for an online Hangouts meeting, as deemed necessary by their teachers.

In Secondary:
Students who isolate for a short period of time will receive the regular homework (via Pronote) and can contact the teachers by email or chat if needed. They will also have access to streaming sessions and activities on Google classroom. A schedule of streaming sessions will be provided by the teachers on Classroom. They may be invited for an online Hangouts meeting, as deemed necessary by their teachers.

4
Will all classes/subjects be taught as usual? There will be content modifications to reduce the risk of transmission between students, such as the elimination of close contact sports, the modification of music classes (no instruments or singing), and no close contact group work. There are also some changes to recess and lunch to ensure physical distancing, as well as a staggered drop-off and pick up schedule by grade.Academic
5
What if my child's teacher is required to stay home?If the classroom teacher is legally required to stay away from school due to AHS isolation protocols, one of our regular substitute teachers will supervise the students in the classroom, and the students’ teacher may lead lessons remotely.Academic
6
What if there are multiple staff absences and not enough substitute teachers? If the classroom teacher is legally required to stay away from school due to AHS isolation protocols, one of our regular substitute teachers will supervise the students in the classroom, and the students’ teacher may lead lessons remotely. With the strict enforcement of no symptoms allowed at school and enhanced health measures, we do not anticipate more absences than usual. We are a small school with limited resources yet will adjust accordingly and will make every efforts to minimally disrupt the normal routine, while protecting public health.Academic
7
Will there be cameras in the classrooms so kids who stay home can keep up?We will be offering a Distance Learning program for those families who are unable to send their children (grades 1-12) to school this Fall. While based on the program we implemented last Spring, this Fall version will be streamlined since our resources are limited and will be prioritized to ensure the quality of our in-class teaching is not affected. This learning approach will require significant parent involvement and assistance to ensure the students are acquiring the necessary learning skills that are being taught. Academic
8
Will there be any field trips, even if they are within walking distance?Field trips are currently not included in the Alberta Return to School plan. Walking distance field trips are not currently planned, as we will not be able to have any parent volunteers.Academic
9
Will my child have gym, music and art?Classes such as music, art and physical education will be taught yet their content will be modified to respect all government recommended guidelines and school protocols.Academic
10
Will there be a technology loan program again? Students in grades 1-12 will be assigned their own device. Students in grades 7 and above will be able to take their devices home. Students in lower grades requiring a device for distance learning must contact jonathan.bateman@lycee.ca to be able to take the device home.Academic
11
How will substitute teachers be assigned? Will Lycée retain additional staff this year as a precaution? The Lycee has a dedicated pool of regular substitute teachers. If the classroom teacher is legally required to stay away from school due to AHS isolation protocols, one of our regular substitute teachers will supervise the students in the classroom, and the students’ teacher may lead lessons remotely.Academic
12
How will parent teacher sessions work this year?Close contacts can return to school after they have completed the 14-day isolation period as
long as they haven’t developed any symptoms.
Academic
13
Will secondary students be changing classes or are they going to stay in one class and the teachers will rotate rooms?Students will stay in a single classroom dedicated to their cohort. Teachers will rotate from room to room. They will respect strict sanitizing guidelines and will wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible. The only other room that the students will use is the Science Lab for specific experiments that can't be made in a regular classroom. The Science Lab and equipment will be sanitized after each cohort using it.Academic
14
How will the school support students (Maternelle included) who are sick, showing symptoms preventing them from attending class in person?Students who are temporarily unable to attend school during the semester for medical reasons will also be able to participate in the distance learning program during their time at home. This will allow students who are sick, or otherwise required to isolate, to continue their studies. These students are expected to return to in-person class upon recovery or release from isolation. When students in maternelle are sick or showing symptoms that prevent them from attending class in person, our teachers will work with parents to provide some material to work on at home. As every situation is different, these will be considered on a case by case basis, depending on the situation and length of absence.Academic
15
What is the plan if there is a second wave and schools are ordered to shut down again?
If the Lycée is legally required to stop in person classes, our students’ learning will continue as it did in March. Students in grade 1-12 will already be equipped with their own device and be ready to transition back to full-time Distance Learning. Academic
16
Why has the school day been shortened? The school day ends earlier than usual to allow for staggered dismissal of all classes. While schedules have been changed, we made sure your child continues to receive a full day of instruction. The lunch break has been reduced to allow for staggering and the school day has been reduced by the same amount hence the new pickup times. However, the excellence of our program will not be compromised as we made sure your child continues to receive a full day of instruction.

17
What additional cleaning / sanitization is planned? An enhanced cleaning and disinfecting protocol has been implemented, including daily cleaning for all areas of the school, with washrooms and high-touch surface cleaned several times a day and on an as needed basis. In addition, regular deep cleaning/sanitization of the building will take place regularly when students are not present. An electrostatic disinfectant sprayer is used on the playgrounds between cohorts. In the Building
18
Will face masks be mandatory for students? It is required that all teachers and staff in all school settings and students in grades 4-12 wear non-medical masks while in shared areas of school, outside the classroom, and where they may not be able to maintain the recommended physical distancing requirements. Non-medical face masks may be considered but are not routinely recommended for younger students in grades K-3. It is recommended that these students instead adhere to the other public health strategies that mitigate the risk of transmission of COVID-19, such as cohorting, hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette to reduce the risk of transmission. Masks are not routinely recommended for younger students in grades K-3 due to difficulties with proper fit, compliance, and less virus transmission among younger children. Younger children may not be able to avoid touching their mask, and this could end up increasing the risk of virus transmission more than not wearing a mask at all.In the Building
19
Will face masks be mandatory for teachers and staff? It is required that all teachers and staff in all school settings and students in grades 4-12 wear non-medical masks while in shared areas of school, outside the classroom, and where they may not be able to maintain the recommended physical distancing requirements. Non-medical face masks may be considered but are not routinely recommended for younger students in grades K-3.In the Building
20

The Government of Alberta will distribute more than 1.6 million masks to 740,000 students and 90,000 staff. In addition, school staff will get one reusable face shield to use in schools at their discretion. A mask must still be worn while wearing a face shield. In the Building
21
How will you monitor who accesses the building? There will be mandatory screening for all individuals entering the building. Visitors will only be allowed on an exceptional basis and will be required to sign in and wear a mask.In the Building
22
Where will students have recess? What about on "bad weather days"?Students will have recess everyday, with their cohort grop. Cohorts will have recess in a designated area to maintain physical distancing, and will enter/exit through their assigned doors. If the weather is too cold to go outside, recess will take place indoors. In the Building
23

When physical distancing is not possible, students in grades 4 and above will be wearing masks. Lockers will be off limits. In class, individual space will be provided for students belongings instead. There will be markings on the floor, as well as signs, arrows and posters to help maintain physical distancing. Teachers will do their best to make the students feel comfortable and promote a happy and safe learning environment. In the Building
27
What exactly is a “cohort”?Students will be grouped into cohorts and schedules have been created to avoid contact between cohorts. A cohort is defined as a group of students and staff who remain together and do not interact with others. To reduce contact between cohorts, class entry and recesses have been staggered, and students will eat lunch within their cohort. The size of the cohort will depend on the physical space of the classroom or learning setting. Larger classes are located in larger classrooms. Our cohorts trend towards 17 students per class or less, with the exception of the Grade 4 class. The Grade 4 class will be situated in the Mezzanine to allow for more physical distancing between students. In the Building

What is the approach for children who exhibit COVID-like symptoms?A student who develops symptoms that could be caused by either COVID-19 or by a known pre-existing condition (e.g., allergies) should be tested for COVID-19 to confirm that it is not the source of their symptoms before entering or returning to school. Should your child exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 that are not attributable to a pre-existing condition, they must be kept home. They need to stay home until you get a negative COVID-19 test result. They can then come back to school as soon as the symptoms have disappeared and you inform us about the test result. We appreciate every member of the school community abiding by these measures as we know it takes a collective effort to keep our students, staff and families healthy and safe.In the Building
30
What is the approach for children who exhibit COVID-like symptoms that are attributable to pre-existing, managed, non-contagious conditions? E.g. asthma, allergiesA student who develops symptoms that could be caused by either COVID-19 or by a known pre-existing condition (e.g., allergies) should be tested for COVID-19 to confirm that it is not the source of their symptoms before entering or returning to school. For a child who has allergies or other pre-existing medical conditions, the school should get both a negative COVID-19 test result and a note from the doctor about the pre-existing medical condition and related symptoms. These (non COVID-19) symptoms would become their baseline health status. The student can attend school as long as the symptoms stay the same. Please contact us about your child’s pre-existing medical conditions so we may keep a confidential record of these conditions. We appreciate every member of the school community abiding by these measures as we know it takes a collective effort to keep our students, staff and families healthy and safe.In the Building
31
Two masks are not enough. What is the plan for more masks? What if my child forgets or loses or damages theirs?Parents are required to provide their child (grades 4 -12) with a mask/face covering to wear. Parents can choose to have their child wear one of the two masks provided by Alberta Education/AHS, or another of their choosing. One of these masks should stay at school to ensure there is always a spare on hand.In the Building

If there is an illness in one classroom will all children in that cohort be sent home? What happens to the cohorts of the siblings of the ill child, or the classes of the siblings of my child? The daily health screening questionnaire includes a question about having close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. If a student answers this with YES, they are not permitted to attend class. If a case is confirmed, we will take all direction from the zone medical officer of health. In the Building
33
If a child /family member goes for a COVID test, do they have to inform the school? Will the cohort be sent home until the test results are received?Parents must inform the school if a family member has tested positive for COVID-19. The information will be treated with confidentiality. The Lycee will notify all staff and parents if a case is confirmed at school. We will support students and staff to learn or work from home if they are required to isolate. The Lycee will work closely with the zone medical officer of health and follow all directions provided regarding the cohort, etc. In the Building

72
When can a teacher, staff member or student return to school following a negative COVID-19 test?Symptomatic persons who tests negative can return to school when their symptoms resolve
except if they have been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case.
An asymptomatic person who tests negative can return to school right away except if they have
been identified as a close contact of a confirmed case.
Close contacts of cases need to complete a 14 day isolation period.
When to Stay Home
73
If a student has symptoms of COVID-19, can their asymptomatic siblings (or others asymptomatic in the household) go to school?Yes, asymptomatic siblings or family members can continue to go to school, unless:
• The student with symptoms tests positive for COVID-19
• The student with symptoms is also a close contact* (see definition below) of a positive case (in which case, the siblings or family members should all self-isolate until the test result is reported).
When to Stay Home
74
If a child does not have symptoms but is identified as a close contact of a positive case,
do others in their household need to self-isolate (e.g., siblings, other family members)?
No. Contacts of close contacts do not need to isolate. When to Stay Home
75
What is considered a close contact in a school?
When there is a case of COVID-19 in a school, a close contact is anyone who:
• has been within two metres of that person for more than 15 minutes (cumulative) while
they are infectious
• shared food or drink or had contact such as hugging or kissing
Generally, all individuals who share a classroom with the case are considered close contacts.
When to Stay Home
76
If students or staff are wearing masks at school, are they still considered close contacts?
Wearing a mask helps to prevent respiratory droplets from contaminating other people or
surfaces. Masks are helpful in preventing the spread of COVID with small amounts of contact
(e.g., standing beside each other for a short time).
However, wearing a mask is not considered enough to guarantee prevention of the spread of
COVID-19 among students or staff in close contact with a positive case.

When to Stay Home
77
When can a student or staff member who is identified as a close contact return to
school?
Close contacts can return to school after they have completed the 14-day isolation period as
long as they haven’t developed any symptoms.
When to Stay Home
78

What should I do if I am concerned my child has been exposed to COVID-19 at school?
Students may continue to attend school if they are well, unless notified by AHS that they are a contact of a confirmed case.
Schools will communicate to students/parents/guardians if there is a case of COVID-19 at their child’s school. AHS will identify and notify all close contacts of the positive case.

What happens when a school student or staff member tests positive?
AHS receives positive case results directly from the lab. The staff member or student (or their
parent/guardian) is informed of their positive test result, and provided with guidance, by AHS
Public Health.
The positive case is required to isolate at home. They cannot attend school until Public Health
determines that they are no longer infectious.

How will schools be notified of positive cases in staff or students?
AHS notifies the positive individual and collects information to help identify any close contacts.
The school will only be notified if the positive case attended school while they were infectious.
The school will be asked to help identify any students or staff that may have been exposed at
school so AHS Public Health can notify them. All other staff, students and parents/guardians will
be notified of the case or outbreak by the school.
If the positive case did not attend school while they were infectious, the school would not be
notified by AHS.

What happens if there is one case of COVID-19 in a school? One case will trigger an “alert status” and the school will work with AHS contact tracing to
identify close contacts. As directed by AHS, the school will send out a letter to the students/parents/guardians and staff to notify them of the alert.

How many cases do there need to be before an outbreak is declared? Two or more cases of COVID-19 in a school within a 14 day period is considered an outbreak.
As directed by AHS, the school will send out a letter to the students/parents/guardians and staff
to notify them of the outbreak.

Will the school be closed if there is an outbreak?Public health measures for outbreak management are based on recommendations of the Zone
Medical Officer of Health. In the majority of situations school closure would not be required to
manage the disease control aspects of an outbreak. Extra precautions of group, class or school
closures may be taken by the school.

Can students/staff having travelled internationally return to school settings under the new “International Border Pilot Program” at the Calgary Airport? The new "International Border Pilot Program" requires registrants to adhere to several conditions. Please follow this link to read the full conditions of the program.

The section below refers to school and child care and indicates:

“Child care programs (for example daycare, out of school care), K to 12 schools and post-secondary institutions - attendees, students in schools and staff who work in these settings cannot go back to these settings until they have their second test and have received a negative result.”

Participants in this pilot must undergo a second test on day 6 or 7 after returning to Alberta. This means that children and staff members will not be allowed back into a school until after they get a second negative test result, which given these timelines will be a minimum of seven days from the time that participants are back in Alberta.
