Our overall school student wellness goal is to limit as much screen time during the academic day and provides moments of raising our heart rates, activity time, and free play.
Raise Activity Time/Decrease Screen Time: During our school day, we strive for opportunities to help make our students move and break the mold of sitting behind a desk at all times. In their classrooms, we implement brain break activities that will raise their heart rates, cross the midline so that both sides of their brains are active, and strength their bodies. After dismissing from lunch, we give each class an event called "Lunch Laps" with Mrs. Heller and Ms. Plack that students raise their heart rates and complete laps around the kickball field before recess. During the school day, students also receive 20 minutes of recess time, and Physical Education once/twice a week with Mrs. Heller. Also outside of the school hours, students can join various clubs to work on the pillars of physical fitness like Fitness Fun Club with Mrs. Bailey, Ms. Plack, Mrs. Heller, Mrs. Caswell, Mrs. Sickle, Mrs. Wood, Ms. Sapenaro, and Mr. Johnson. As well as, Running Club with Mrs. Pope, Mrs. Anger, and Mrs. Foster to prepare for a 5k race held in the community that they can run with their friends and family members.
Over the last few years, we have seen an uptick of non-healthy snack and drink options coming into our school; fast food breakfasts, soda pop in lunches, chips being smuggled into school in pockets, etc. We want our students and families to know what is appropriate for school and what is not. We need to sit down with a panel of Blackburn staff members to create a list of "yes"/"no"'s. And then work together as a staff to get the message out to our families. We can educate our own classroom students, but also educate them in the lunch room about what is expectable and what is not. We can also use the tools in our toolboxes and reach out to families via SeeSaw about what is appropriate at school.
