Stated PurposeOSSE is publicly releasing LEA Faculty and Staff data from the 2025-26 school year, including demographic, retention, gradeband, student:teacher ratio, student:staff ratio, effectiveness, certification, infield, and demand (teacher vacancies at LEAs) data via flat data files. This file contains information on retention.

Sheet DefinitionsRetention Sheets: The deduplicated SEA-level (citywide), LEA-Level, and School-Level counts of teacher retention from the 2024-25 school year to the 2025-26 school year. Tabs are organized by:
• Overall - Retention of teachers, including stayers (same role, same school), movers (same role, new school), changers (new role in the same or a new school), and leavers (no longer employed in a DC public or public charter school)
• Experience – Retention of teachers by years of experience categories. Provided for teachers that were stayers (same role, same school) only.
• Race – Retention of teacher by racial and ethnic categories. Provided for teachers that were stayers (same role, same school) only.

Data Elements2025-26 Faculty & Staff Data: based on the annual Faculty and Staff Data Collection LEAs completed with OSSE in the Fall of 2025, based on staff as of Oct. 6, 2025. LEAs uploaded, validated, and certified all data submissions.

Sectors are defined as follows:
*DCPS: District of Columbia Public Schools
*PCS: Public Charter Schools
*JJS: Juvenile Justice School

CaveatsThe Retention tabs include information from teachers in the 2024-25 school year that had an overall FTE greater than or equal to 0.5 as a teacher at one school.

SEA (citywide) and LEA-Level counts of “Stayer” teachers includes only teachers that were retained at their same school and not the count of teachers that were retained citywide or within the LEA, (regardless if they stayed at the same school or moved to a different school within the city or LEA), respectively. Schools where the Stayer count within the retention tabs are equal to zero are schools that opened or closed in the 2025-26 school year. These explanations are captured in the notes column of the Retention tabs.

Metrics are based on counts of individual people, not full-time equivalencies (FTEs), unless otherwise specified above.
