Doing it with Vision #SmartDrivingCarshttps://youtu.be/1ThY2Q-5y5ABuilding on work that started 20-years ago, Alberto Broggi discusses Ambarella's low-power chip (4 Watts) that provides 4k resolution stereo vision and allows identification of vehicles up to 200 meters away. They have an algorithm to keep the individual cameras aligned on a frame-by-frame basis, so that stereo vision is maintained. They have also a method for attenuating and ignoring spurious lighting (e.g. sunlight) to prevent blooming effects.

Broggi explains that the chips are integrated into the cameras, so that all the processing is done internally and only data points are provided, so the information that is output is minimal (e.g. objects, lane-markings, etc). He explains how they integrated short-range and long-range 3D cameras to provide a full view that a human could never see. The latest chip also includes built-in compression to allow video streaming and he explains that it is automotive grade.

Speaking at the 2018 SmartDrivingCars Summit on a panel moderated by autonomous vehicle legal expert, Professor Bryant Walker Smith, Soriano explained that the DMV wanted to learn what it needed to learn with its initial autonomous vehicle reporting structure. He said the reports were never meant to compare autonomous vehicle suppliers but were intended on being a window into how autonomous vehicles in California were operating.

Pierce Transit - Extending Washington State Bus Transit Experience #SmartDrivingCarshttps://youtu.be/jHDHOLtIsaEJerry Lutrin provides a case study that found that insurance companies and pools have a financial incentive to add automation because of safety improvements (the resulting reduction in claims). One of the findings is that the collision warning system effectively trained the drivers to driver safer.

With 1.1 million employees, they have and an average revenue of $60M per dealership. He describes dealerships that are effectively sales operations with a short-term outlook, where most of their profits are from financing and service, even though the majority of the revenue is from car sales.

But, with their deep community roots, protective strong state franchising laws and a robust nationwide lobby, the U.S.'s 16,000 dealers, 90% of which are independently-owned, are a strong political force that will resist changes to their business model (e.g. the resistance to Tesla's direct sales approach).

The biggest benefit could be the reduction of pain and suffering. The city of LA is looking at how they can be proactive and be able to pivot as needed. The idea of distributed batteries as a way of powering freight and transit was discussed. One study in Germany suggests that pantographs would only be needed in 4 to 5% of given routes.

Fleet sharing, fleet charging and road sharing were discussed. Kornhauser suggested that the early markets for ride-hailing/ride-sharing may not be in Manhattan, but in suburban and less dense markets.
