Due to Nintendo's rounding to tenthousands of units, there are occasionally discrepancies of 0.01 million units between the LTD numbers in Nintendo's financial results
and the cumulative totals in this spreadsheet, because the spreadsheet adds up quarterly numbers to arrive at its yearly and cumulative figures.
Nintendo reports software shipments for titles that exceed 1.00 million units during any given fiscal year. This inevitably leads to many games lacking up to date
information. The absence of numbers doesn't mean that a given game has stopped selling entirely. After all, nowadays games are available in digital format, so available
stock never runs out. Nintendo's only breakdown of software shipments concerns Japan vs. overseas sales, so this limited breakdown wasn't yet considered important
enough to be tracked in this spreadsheet. This may change in the future.
Due to the reporting method mentioned above, various first party games do not show up here at all. Conversely, Nintendo's evergreen software is given special
treatment with additional columns for fiscal year and LTD performance. The various shades of green are supposed to highlight increments of 5 million units, but
at the time this idea was implemented, it wasn't clear just how well some games were going to sell. The green to signal 20m+ sellers is already so dark that
adding another notch could prove difficult to read the numbers, nevermind that games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe would end up with entirely black columns eventually.
Some collaborations between Nintendo and third party publishers result in split publishing duties across the globe. Nintendo only reports sales figures for the regions
they published the given game in. An example of this is Pokken Tournament DX where Nintendo only reported overseas sales.
The regional tabs are straight-forward enough for Japan and the Americas, but Europe and Other are considered separate regions only since the beginning of the fiscal
year ending March 2020. Nintendo's year over year comparison allowed the fiscal year ending March 2019 to be fully reconstructed with split figures for Europe and
Other, but the same couldn't be done for Switch's first five fiscal quarters, hence why the tabs "Europe" and "Other" start with a big block that combines four quarters.
The combined quarterly figures for Europe and Other can be looked up in the tab "Other 2017-2019." This used to be Nintendo's reporting method for the longest time,
but Nintendo's forays into previously neglected countries justified a more detailed breakdown going forward.
The current cutoff at December 2025 in the various tabs does not mean that the creator of this spreadsheet expects Switch to have run its course by then. After all,
new copies of Mario Kart Wii have been shipped for more than ten years. The current cutoff is nothing more than an expression of laziness on the creator's part.
The compiled data in this spreadsheet is free to use for everyone. It is a quick-to-access source of information for anyone who seeks knowledge. While all numbers
are available on Nintendo's corporate website, you'd have to sift through dozens of documents in order to get to see everything, and the number of said documents
is only going to grow bigger over time.
Switch OLED launch: The first batch of shipments of the Switch OLED model were underway in September 2021 to be ready to be sold in stores on October 8th, 2021.
Nintendo decided to include these units in the figure for the regular Switch model for the quarter ending September 2021. Switch OLED was singled out as its own SKU
in the following quarter (ending December 2021) with an LTD figure for the running fiscal year. It is assumed that this inflation of the regular Switch SKU for the quarter
ending September 2021 resulted in a lower than actual figure for the regular Switch SKU for the quarter ending December 2021 to balance things out. Nintendo
can sweep this under the rug because they report a three-quarter-total for hardware shipments, so there is no official SKU breakdown for the quarter ending
December 2021 alone. This spreadsheet, however, breaks down the quarters' figures, and due to the aformentioned circumstances can't have 100% true numbers
for the regular Switch SKU and the Switch OLED SKU for the quarters ending September 2021 and December 2021. The numbers are factual for both SKUs if the two
quarters get added up, but the individual figures are not due to Nintendo's accounting practice. Ultimately, this will only matter if someone wants to make year over year
comparisons for individual SKUs, so this elaborate note here will hardly ever be important.
An additional line is found at the very bottom of the Global Hardware+Software tab that addresses the CESA White Paper which is published every now and then.
Nintendo reports shipment data for smaller selling games which don't reach the necessary 1m threshold within one fiscal year anymore, so this constitutes additional
official sales data. CESA lags behind by a considerable amount of time. At present, the sales figures in their White Paper are only up until the end of December 2020.
For the time being, CESA numbers do not flow into any of the calculations above the black line in the Global Hardware+Software tab. This may change in the future.
