Before the first dive, students do these things with instructor guidance:

Students learn urchin behavior and anatomy, and how to cull urchins effectively.

Students learn how to cull urchins without impacting other marine life.

Instructor uses buoy diagrams and images to teach students to orient to white, orange and gray buoys.

Instructor uses grid diagrams to teach students to navigate the Tanker's Reef Project.

Students learn to recognize and report: marine mammal disturbance, invasive species, damage.

Students prep dive gear with attention to avoiding dragging gear or bottom contact.

Buddy teams get a lane assignment: g2kr.com

Students record lane assignments and starting meter marks on their slates.

Underwater on the second dive:

Buddy pairs use the cable grid to navigate to their assigned lanes.

Students mark the time they begin actually culling urchins on their slates.

Buddy pairs work together culling urchins within the same 5 meter / 15' lane.

Students mark their end time and location (lane and meter mark) on their slates.

After the second dive, students log dive data with instructor guidance:

The form is easy to fill in on a phone at the dive site. Each buddy should log each dive separately.
