South Asian Mental Health Initiative and NetworkBorn into the South Asian community, we often take mental health and wellness for granted. As a result, instead of being able to access mental health care, we are faced with roadblocks such as the stigma and taboo associated with mental illness. SAMHIN’s primary goal is to overcome these notions and improve the mental health of the South Asian community through educational programs on the importance of mental health and wellness and improved access to care.732-902-2561, 10-7, www.samhin.org

Copline
Our vision is to remove the stigma associated with an officer’s decision
to keep his/her emotions inside for fear of retribution and/or
retaliatory action if his/her personal information, feelings and state
of mind is revealed to his/her agency. COPLINE® volunteers conduct
themselves in a manner that reflects the highest level of honor and
integrity.

COP2COPCop 2 Cop is the first program of its kind in the nation, legislated
into law to focus on suicide prevention and mental health support for
law enforcement officers. After a series of police suicides from 1996 to
1998, community leaders in New Jersey believed that law enforcement
professionals needed a confidential, safe outlet where they could talk
to peers who could understand and provide support without judgment. In
1998, the Department of Personnel—mandated by P.L. 1998, c.
149—established a statewide “law enforcement officer crisis intervention
services” hotline.

Friendline
Institute on Aging’s 24-hour toll-free Friendship Line is the only
accredited crisis line in the country for people aged 60 years and
older, and adults living with disabilities. We also make on-going
outreach calls to lonely older adults. While there are other
organizations that respond to the needs of people who may be
contemplating suicide, none provides the type of services that IOA’s
Friendship Line offers to respond to the public health problem of
suicide among the elderly.
