This toolkit was developed as a guide for those looking for resources to support early language and literacy development in the South African context. The resources can be used by a wide range of people who work with and care for young children, from parents and caregivers to trained professionals. We focused on locally developed resources or resources that have been used locally and are relevant for our context. Most of the of the resources are creative commons licenced and free to download, with some that require a subcription fee or can be purchased from the developer. Some can be accessed without training, whereas others are linked to a training course provided by NGOs or Speech and Language Therapists.

The "Definitions" worksheet contains the definition of each column in the "Resources" tab.

The "Resources" worksheet contains a database of resources, with information regarding language-literacy domains targeted, languages versioned, the age range for which the resource is appropriate, availability and accessibility.

You can filter the database in the "Resources" tab by different criteria. This will produce a list of tools that meet those criteria.

1) In the filter for the column "Vocabulary" select "yes"

2) In the filter for the column "Minimum age" select all values ≤ 3

3) In the filter for the column "Maximum age" select all values ≥ 5

Note that if your minimum age is 3 and you filter the Minimum age by selecting "3" only, you will not get a complete list of relevant resources. You must choose "3" and ALL values less than 3. Likewise, choose your maximum age and ALL values higher than your maximum.

Additional filters specify the target user (teacher, caregiver etc.) and training requirements.
