Introduction
3
Hi! A while back I made a reading and purchasing guide for the BOOM! Studios Power Rangers comic book series on reddit that people seemed to like - so here I am updating my guide and making it easier to navigate and update.

The most common question is whether you should read the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers and Go Go Power Rangers in chronological or release order. I personally champion for release order since themes and reveals are shared between titles. Chronological is also valid, but particularly shows events of Shattered Grid well before you get back to them. It all comes down to preference.

Furthermore, some guides suggest you alterate between issues of Mighty Morphin and Power Rangers based on the release order of the individual issues which is how Deluxe Editions arrange them, For this guide I will be grouping issues based on tradeback releases since they're the most accessible option outside of the digital releases.

I started this guide back when tradebacks were the way to get caught up and only three Deluxe Editions existed. Now Deluxe Editions have become the default way most people get into the series, so I've had to make a lot of adjustments to better explain them. I've also broken down all the releases in multiple ways to help people visualize how to best collect the series.

I hope this guide helps as many people as possible get into and catch up on the comics!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there so many series? Make it easier to understand!

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was the first series to be released. This series starts with Tommy joining the team after they've been active for a while. This is where several encounters with fan-favorite Lord Drakkon happen, including the 25th Anniversary event Shattered Grid!

Go Go Power Rangers is soon after published alongside the main MMPR comics. Taking place soon after the original five member become Power Rangers, this series focuses on the day-to-day lives of the rangers. With many of the covers paying homage to classic teen movies, this series is more lightheated and focuses more on the personal relationships of the rangers.

With the Necessary Evil crossover event, the series went through a massive timeskip. The series also got a new creative team and would soon after go through a relaunch with a new set of titles that follows the changes established in Necessary Evil. Once again, we have two concurrent series during this era:

Mighty Morphin follows the status quo change in MMPR season 2 with Tommy as the White Ranger and leader of the team while Rocky, Adam, and Aisha have joined the team. Zedd has usurped Rita and poses a bigger threat than the rangers have ever faced before, Grace's new Green Ranger remains difficult to work with, and we learn more about Zordon's past!

Power Rangers follows Jason, Zack, and Trini after they leave the team and become the Omega Rangers during the Necessary Evil arc. After learning about the aftermath of Shattered Grid as well as the sudden reappearance of Lord Drakkon, the Omega Rangers head to space save the universe. Set controls to outer space now, flying higher than ever before~!
Oh wait, wrong series. Unless...

While they had their own numbering, it was also acknowledged that they had an alternate numbering following the original MMPR legacy numbers. This means that Mighty Morphin #1 was also MMPR #56, Power Rangers #1 was also MMPR #57, and so on. The two series ultimately gave us a fast-paced series that went twice as fast before with many revelations that would intersect with the other series.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Recharged would eventually bring the two teams back together onto a single title again. No, you are not missing MMPR #56-100, it is meant to start at #100. Rita Repulsa returns as Mistress Vile, followed by an uncanny familiar face, and sets the stage for the 30th Anniversary event, Darkest Hour and the end of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comics saga!

Power Rangers Prime gives us a fresh new start! After the fallout of Darkest Hour, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic saga has come to an end. This series follows Angel Grove University students and Lauren Shiba who is now a fugitive from the Eltarian empire.

There are also a few spin-off titles you'll see.

Drakkon New Dawn is a mini-series that follows Ranger Slayer and the World of the Coinless after the events of Necessary Evil.

Power Rangers Unlimited is a title used for specials that explore side stories related to the main story, it does not have a continuous story of its own.

Power Rangers Universe is a six-issue spin-off series that is a prequel to the series that shows us the history of the Emissaries, the Phantom Ranger, and Dark Specter.

Ranger Academy is a 12-issue all-ages spin-off set at an unknown point in the future at a school that trains teenagers to one day become Power Rangers. This is part of the BOOM! Box imprint for younger audiences so it takes on a very different tone from the other series. It doesn't directly tie in to the main series, though there are cameos from earlier Power Rangers comic series.

There are also several one-off graphic novels. These all happen later in the expected continuity and do not affect the main story.

Can I just read Shattered Grid?/ What do I need to read before Shattered Grid?

If you want to jump straight into Shattered Grid, you can!

There's nothing wrong with checking out the big exciting story if it's what grabbed your interest in the first place. I highly recommend checking out the compilation tradeback Rise of Drakkon for a crash course on the story if you choose to go this way.

For reading just the event by itself, I recommend the following
-If you buy the hardcover Deluxe Edition, that's it, you have everything you need
-If you buy the trade paperback volume titled Shattered Grid, you will be missing out on some side stories which you can get in Go Go Power Rangers vol 3 and Lost Chronicles vol 2
-If you think you might end up reading the rest of the series as tradebacks, you can read the main Shattered Grid story in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers vol 7 and vol 8 instead and then also grab the side stories mentioned above.

If you do decide you want to read the whole story before Shattered Grid, please note that Go Go Power Rangers issues #9-12 is a side story and is one of the main points of contention for
the reading order since some time travel is involved.
- If you read in chronological order, you will be suddenly interrupted by a storyline that won't be properly introduced for a while.
- If you read in release order, you will get to Shattered Grid faster. This is my personal recommendation, but It's your choice.

Are the hardcover Deluxe Edition books all I need?

Since more Deluxe Editions have been released, my answer is: Yes, if all you want to collect are the Deluxe Editions, that is a perfectly valid way to collect the series. Overall, I think the Deluxe Edition books are a great way to get into the series now. The main drawback is that you will constantly be two or more years behind on current storylines.

Recently, it seems like earlier tradebacks have been out of print and more difficult to track down\, so many people have found more success in starting their collections with the Deluxe Editions. Along with the 2024 Humble Bundle, it seems like Deluxe Editions have become the default way most newcomers start the saga.

A small amount of plot essential stories have been skipped for Deluxe Edition releases, though we may see them in future releases. Without speculating on main numbered releases, so far Drakkon: New Dawn (#1-3) and Power Rangers Universe have been skipped.

Collecting this series is a bit of a mess but hopefully we'll get through it together with this guide.

What Order do I read the Deluxe Editions?
Do I have to switch back and forth between the Deluxe Editions often?

The way the Deluxe Editions map the chapters are good so you do not have to follow my guide closely.
Let's make it so you don't have to look at the rest of the guide:

===============================================================================
The easiest way to read the Higgins/Parrott run is chronological order:

- GGPR Book One DE
- GGPR Book Two DE
(Stop after Forever Rangers, Do not read the rest of GGPR Volume 2)
- MMPR Year One DE
- MMPR Year Two DE
- MMPR Shattered Grid DE
- MMPR Beyond The Grid DE

The one downside of this reading order is that GGPR #9-12 tie in to Shattered Grid which you will get back to much later on in your reading. The advantage is switching books less often.

===============================================================================
If you want an interconnected narrative, read the Higgins/Parrott run in release order:

- MMPR Year One DE
(read up to #16 in MMPR Year Two if you are willing to switch a little more)
- GGPR Book One DE (#1-8)
- MMPR Year Two DE
- MMPR Shattered Grid DE (Includes GGPR #9-12)
- MMPR Beyond the Grid DE
- GGPR Book One DE (#13-16)
- GGPR Book Two
(Stop after Forever Rangers, Do not read the rest of GGPR Volume 2)

===============================================================================
Once you finish those, you no longer have to worry about chronology. From here, read the following:

- MMPR Necessary Evil Part One DE
- MMPR Necessary Evil Part Two DE
- Drakkon New Dawn #1-3 (not in any Deluxe Edition, it has its own TPB)
- MM/PR Book One DE
- MM/PR Book Two DE
- MM/PR Book Three DE
- Power Rangers Universe #1-6 (not in any Deluxe Edition, it has its own TPB)

===============================================================================
The rest are not in Deluxe Edition yet, so here is the simplified reading order for the rest

MMPR Recharged (Deluxe Edition releasing ~May 2025):
- MMPR #101-109
- PR Unlimited: The Coinless #1
- PR Unlimited: HyperForce #1
- MMPR #110

Darkest Hour (Deluxe Edition releasing ~ November 2025)
- MMPR #111-116
- PR Unlimited: The Morphin Masters #1
- MMPR #117-122
- MMPR: Darkest Hour #1

Why shouldn't I read all of Go Go Power Rangers Book Two Deluxe Edition?

It is noteworthy to mention that the Go Go Power Rangers Deluxe Editions have a lot of duplicate chapters between the other Deluxe Edition releases. The contents of the GGPR Deluxe Editions are:

GGPR Book One - GGPR #1-16, Back to School #1
GGPR Book Two - GGPR #17-32, Forever Rangers #1

Deluxe Editions for crossover events entirely include the relevant GGPR chapters:

Shattered Grid includes GGPR #9-12
Necessary Evil Part 1 includes GGPR #21-28
Necessary Evil Part 2 includes GGPR #29-32

This means we'll read the the rest of the contents of GGPR Book Two naturally as we go through the Necessary Evil Deluxe Edition books. If you want to avoid duplicates you can pick up the trade paperback volumes for Go Go Power Rangers vol 1, 2, 4, 5, 6
38
Where is the Deluxe Edition for the _________ arc?

They haven't made it yet, the Deluxe Editions are always 2-3 years behind.

For example, Mighty Morphin / Power Rangers Book Three Deluxe Edition was published on 09/04/2024 while the issues it inlucdes were published from 03/09/2022 to 09/28/2022.

The next Deluxe Edition, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Recharged Deluxe Edition, releases on 04/30/2025. Its issues were published from 10/26/22-17/26/2023.

Following this pattern, we can expect the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers saga's last Deluxe Edition to release in 2026.

Are the comics canon to the TV show? Is the TV show canon to the comics?
How come the comics don't show how the rangers/Tommy get their powers?

No, the comics are not canon to the how. It is important to remember that the comics are a separate continuity from the tv series. The comics are a modern re-interpretation of the classic tv series: characters act somewhat differently, cell phones are common, and many new characters are introduced.

However, the comic will expect you to know the major plot points of the MMPR tv show and references major events without rehashing them in the comics.

The Basics. You don't need to know a whole lot to get started on the comics.

Before Go Go Power Rangers #1/Book One:
- Day of the Dumpster (MMPR tv series, S01 E01) - To see how the original team get their powers and the Megazord

Immediately after Forever Rangers, before the start of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #0/Year One
- Green With Evil (MMPR tv series, S01 E17-21) - To see how Tommy is introduced

Necessary Evil starts with a massive timeskip, it was tough to keep this minimal but here are the major events:
- The Green Candle (MMPR tv series, S01 E34-35) - To see how Tommy loses the green ranger powers
- Return of an Old Friend (MMPR tv series, S01 E49-50) - To see how Tommy temporarily regains the green ranger powers.
- Mutiny (MMPR tv series, S02 E01-03) - To see how Lord Zedd usurps Rita as well as the introduction of the Thunderzords
- Green No More arc (MMPR tv series, S02 E07-13) - To see how Tommy permanently loses the green ranger powers.
- White Light (MMPR tv series, S02 E17-18) - To see how Tommy gains the white ranger powers.
- The Ninja Encounter (MMPR tv series S02 E22-24) - To see Rocky, Adam, and Aisha's introduction.
- Power Transfer (MMPR tv series, S02 E27-28) - To see how Jason, Zack, and Trini transfer their powers
40
The graphic novels and crossovers seem cool, why are they considered non-canon?

The simplest reason is because they are fairly standalone and are not affected by nor impact the main story of the comics. Additionally, some of the stories pull more from the tv series than from the current comics. Regardless, they’re great reads for long time fans!
41
(August 2024) Are the comics over after Darkest Hour?

No, BOOM! Studios announced that the "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" series specifically is ending.
However, November 2024, a new series called Power Rangers Prime is starting! It will feature an all new character
