Footpath availability, usually well kept (with the exception of dog litter)
Perhaps more cycling routes, particularly to facilitate children who live in the village getting to local schools (St Aidan's, Skelmanthorpe First, Scissett middle and Shelley College)
4
I very rarely use it, but on occasion travel to/from Huddersfield Uni via bus, usually found it to be adequate
2
Street parking on Cumberworth Road is problematic and feel like recent introduction of yellow lines has actually made the situation worse!
5
Cricket Club is a community hub
Library (although I haven't used for a number of years) was always good when my children were young
Playgrounds are available
Provide more support to develop the cricket club, perhaps long term looking at combining sporting facilities in the village (cricket, football and squash) - imagine the potential if all three clubs were on one amazing purpose built site!
Playgrounds sometimes attract older teenagers and anti-social behaviour, discouraging use by younger children and families
6
Fantastic local walks within and beyond the village, lots of routes published online
5
See previous comments re playgrounds and sports facilities
Tipsy Cow is lovely, great addition to the village. Don't use as often but also Henry's.
7
St Aidan's school has been beyond FANTASTIC over the ten years that my children have been attending - support them to continue being great.
The Doctors could be vastly improved - availability of appointments (online) and patient care is poor. Relationship between the Doctors and Well pharmacy is not great.
5
I think the local economy is good, with a bustling main street and recent additions to the village (e.g. the DIY shop)

Cricket club is an amazing community resource and needs to be supported to continue to flourish . I volunteer here.
Encourage further businesses to set up on the main street.

I commute into Huddersfield to work - there wouldn't be opportunities in my career in my village, but I don't expect this.
4
Development (although I appreciate not welcomed by many)
Availability of affordable rental properties for families (my friend has recently been served notice and is having to move out of the village due to lack of availability)
63
I personally think Skelmanthorpe is a good place to bring up my family and my children absolutely love living here.
I think more generally Skelmanthorpe does not have a positive identity outside of the village (much of this is legacy) BUT I think there is work to do to tackle anti-social behaviour, particularly on the main road running through the village. I think the village is used as a congregation point for teenagers from outside the village, which has the potential to cause issues.
5
I would feel reasonably safe walking through the village alone on an evening. I feel reasonably comfortable in allowing my children to be unaccompanied around the village during the daytime.
Recent reports of local burglaries causes me some concern.

Traffic is very busy
Lots of new housing developments so difficult to pull out onto commercial road.
Through road to Huddersfield

Traffic lights/ pelican crossing
6
Great bus routes from village to Huddersfield
Train station very good at Denby dale
Direct train route from Denby dale to Leeds
3
Lots of houses with no off road parking
With increased traffic it’s difficult to get anywhere due to parked cars on the roads.
3
Rural spaces
Rural spaces/ open views village feel disappearing due to numerous new housing estates on green belt land.
Such a shame
4
Great dog walks
Stop any further developments as they won’t be any open spaces left to walk the dog only on road side. If this happens might as well live in a city centre
4
Two parks and scare park good for kids
Protect this space
5
Lots of shops in centre
Investment into village as growing and viabrant
4
Lots of independent businesses
3
Mix of housing available
Very expensive
Younger generation will never be able to offers a first time home due to house prices
55
Great friendly community
3
Lots of house and car break ins recently doesn’t feel safe
4

Easy to move around with a bike.
Not good for walking on the pavements, as people seem to park on them, particularly up Lidgett Lane
3
More reliable transport
4
Stop people parking on pavements
4
Widen the pavements, and cut the centre of Skelmanthorpe down to one lane, to reduce the speed of cars.
6
Lots of footpaths in the area
4
I don't believe there is anywhere for the older children to go, not many uniformed groups. I remember a youth club.
4
Maybe some where central for people to know about this community groups
3
maybe have some recreational classes for older people. I am in my late 50's and we feel unprovided for
53
No clubs, no parks. Yes there are football fields, recreation grounds, but no grounds for people to walk around like Ravensknowl park.
4
This is improving but you still need something else.
6
Possibly more community police, for people to speak to
54
stop people parking on pavements
Reduce the amount of traffic, through the village
Change in law. We should have a policy in a built up area the max speed limit is 20 mph
11
22/6/2023SkelmanthorpeHD8 9A25 - 34Female6
Ponker lane can be quite dangerous since there is no actual pavement and cars can go very fast. I think many more people would consider riding bikes as transportation if there were cycle lanes. I also think that while it is very green here, we could do better on planting more wild flowers for the bees.
55
We may need more parking since all of those new houses are being built. And possibly more for electric vehicles.
6
Everywhere is welcoming and really has a nice small village feel.
Most streets have greenery but I feel this could be improved still.
7
The views, fields and parks.
We are losing many nice views/areas/wildlife due to all the new houses.
7
The parks and fields
Perhaps a gym in the area or more fun hobby places
5
Amazing we have almost everything we could need
The only thing I can think of is there’s no nearby supermarket, especially with more houses being built we are going to need more than a co-op nearby.
6
A great mix of business
7
A large range of housing types and many nice community events
5
Many community events
Maybe events that are more specific to certain groups of people? For example I moved here a few years ago but do not know many people my age in the area as there are no opportunities to do so.
6
Community events
More events for younger people? I guess many people have lived here for years and tend to be of an older age bracket so it’s difficult to meet people I relate to.
7
I trust that for the most part this is a safe area, we left our garage open all night accidentally and nothing was stolen.
Better lighting in some areas at night
6
Very well maintained
I wish the roads would be taken better care of, we have reported many pot holes and some roads just need to be re-done all together
4
I’m not sure how I would get involved if I wanted to? I don’t know who plans events or who gets a say in things.
• A supermarket or more than just a co-op for the growing community
• Events aimed at younger age groups
• More wildflowers and environmentally friendly decisions
• Suggesting new shops for the area
• Create events aimed at meeting new people in the community, perhaps doing hobbies and crafts
• If you sent people free wildflower seeds this could really make a difference

7
Everything is close by with wide pavements & places to cross the road.
Slow the road down a bit
7
It’s there when we need it.
4
There are car parks and road parking
We need more. If visitors are to enjoy all that there is to offer, more parking is needed. Personally I wish more people would use the bus.
6
It’s fantastic just as it is.
Make The Chartist Pub less of an eyesore, more car parks, slow the road down.
7
Which ever direction you go in, there are fields, woods, public footpaths, recs, sports field.
Don’t give up anymore land for house building. There’s enough now. Build elsewhere.
6
The new playground is fantastic. The areas down Strike Lane & Pilling Lane is great for nature walks. Cross Lane sports ground is stunning.
Not enough sports grounds. More needs to be conjured up to satisfy demand.
7
Everything is on my doorstep.
Keep it all maintained to a good standard and advertise it more. Make people interested. Get them to use it.
7
It’s a great place to live and work.
Encourage independent small businesses to thrive and stand out.
7
There’s a good mix of houses, although the prices are higher
As long as it’s affordable for local people and their future generations to buy homes here.
7
I love the bars, restaurants and community events. My children have grown up here with plenty of social options and opportunities to join different clubs etc
Encourage people to organise and create events for everyone to enjoy. No criticising or making it too hard for them. Completely support them. More sporting facilities are required, especially football fields.
7
Skelmanthorpe is amazing!
Keep the bars, restaurants and shops thriving by making it accessible, feel safe, look inviting, keep it pretty/clean/maintained. Advertise it. Be creative. Make it sound special because it is!
6
I’ve never felt scared in Skelmanthorpe. I walk my dog late, along the main road, and it never feels intimidating. I always feel that someone will come to the rescue should I ever need it. It’s lit up along the main road.
There are always teenagers or someone wanting to cause bother but they quickly grow up & move on. The police and CCTV are usually responsive & any major problems seem to get nipped in the bud.
7
Nice flowers everywhere, great Christmas decorations, all the businesses decorate for national events. It’s a lovely village. What’s not to like? Keep it going.
Sort The Chartist area out.
7
I’ve never had to ask for anything.
Keep it as it is.
Slow the road down.
Create more parking.
Encourage visitors.
Get behind creative business owners and event organisers.
All the businesses take pride in their appearance but they need regular money coming in. Attract more visitors and make people want to spend local. Piece Hall, Hebden Bridge, Lindley all have a fantastic, buzzing vibe about them, making people want to spend their money there. Let’s get Skelmanthorpe on the map too.

Speed bumps on Cumberworth Road have helped reduce speeding traffic.
Bus service to Huddersfield/Wakefield/Holmfirth is ok
There could be an extra pedestrian crossing on Commercial road heading towards Scisset Middle School for schoolkids crossing at the other end of the village (near the Windmill Pub building).
Bus service to Huddersfield/Wakefield/Holmfirth could be more frequent and later service to/from Holmfirth would be an improvement
5
Bus service to Huddersfild/Wakefield/Holmfirth is ok
increase services and later services to and from Holmfirth
4
Parking is generally ok apart from on some of the smaller side streets
5
park/playground in the centre is good
More regular cleaning/maintenance. Stop older kids chucking litter and faeces on the equipment ( yes , horrible but has happened)
6
Lots of access to the countryside surrounding the village, many footpaths to surrounding villages and towns for walking.
Upkeep/maintenance of the paths and bridleways could improve , often overgrown or , when , for example, if a tree comes down in storms it can be blocking paths for months. So more regular maintenance to pick up these issues more quickly.
556
Great couple of bars/restaurants, cafes and chippy etc
Re-open one of the derelict pubs ( The Chartist and the Windmill) to give a little more choice and reduce overcrowding in the Tipsy Cow and the Grove. This would create a few more local jobs too.
5
property in the village is mostly well maintained and attractive
too many large 4/5 bed homes being built not enough smaller affordable houses.
Stop allowing houses to be built on green belt
When new developments are built there is no added infrastructure for schools , GP etc
566
people not cleaning up after their dogs is a bit of an issue
54
Re-opening one of the derelict pubs as pub/restaurant
Maintenance of public paths/bridleways
Building on greenbelt, lack of extra infrastructure for additional population
Employ someone to maintain public bridleways and footpaths
Force building companies to be responsible for the additional population pressures on the village and services as part of their permissions for developments.
Don't allow Pub Companies to leave closed pubs to go to ruin when they could be sold to someone who could make use of them rather than left boarded up for years.

I feel safe walking around and safe to let my children move around the village which is the most important thing to us as a family.
Speed checks on Huddersfield Road HD8 9AS as drivers often speed down there, especially at night.
7
Public transport on the bus network is excellent.
More trains from Denby Dale to local towns.
6
There are plenty of parking places.
7
We have two parks which are well maintained.
More options for teenagers.
76
There could be more for teenagers in the area.

To improve the quality of our village and support our community.
6
Enforcement of speed limit through the village, particularly on commercial Road, some cars are driven at excessive speed, endangering the public. Discourage pavement parking which inhibit prams and wheelchair users, in the past I have had to walk out onto the road with a pram as I can’t get through.
7
Very good, regular bus service.
3
The triangle and co-op car parks are not adequate for the volume of cars, more car parking is required as the village population is increasing.
445
Two playgrounds for young children, football pitches and skate park. Cricket club has excellent facilities.
3
Doctors surgery very difficult to get appointments, with the new housing being built it will only get worse!
6
Good mix of independent shops, bars, pubs and restaurants, although another restaurant would be welcomed. The local businesses provide good job opportunities especially for teenagers.
6
Good mix of housing, excellent community spirit. Events at cricket club, Christmas light switch on etc. I love how all the businesses dress their windows to support events etc.
Concern as to whether my children will be able to afford property here, if they wish. Desirable location with good motorway and rail links have increased property prices. Good to live in an upcoming area but concern for future generations.
666
Generally very safe, a little antisocial behaviour occasionally. Main concern is when the village appears to be a target from outsiders particularly in car theft.
66
Parking.
Increasing population but investment in services don’t appear to be keeping up.
More carpark, double yellow lines on some routes.

Live and work in skelmanthorpe. To support development especially for young people
6
Decent size pavements although a couple could be widened for pushchairs and wheelchair users
Widen a few pavements. Main road through village needs more speed bumps as seems some people think it's a motorway. Another zebra crossing maybe outside Premier shop for children to cross after school
6
Lots of frequent busses to Huddersfield and Wakefield.
More frequent links between villages. Maybe a village bus route
4
Not much parking for the amount of traffic
More parking places

7
The pavements are pretty even and there are multiple zebra crossings. The streets feel safe, even at night and are well lit.
Some of the pavements, specifically on Cumberworth Road, are a little bit narrow and could benefit from being wider. The pavements stop part way down the road as well which makes walking a bit more nerve wracking. When I drive up this road, I do try to give ramblers plenty of room but it is difficult when there is oncoming traffic and when you come to the top of the hill when you can't see if there is oncoming traffic.
6
The denby darts was a great idea to improve public transport to our area. It is reasonably regular as well, considering how far away from the centre we are.
The bus stop opposite the grove pub is in an awful position. When a bus stops there, it is difficult to safely overtake it as it's just before two junctions. When buses are stopped there, it is difficult to safely pull put of the junction on the same side (Cumberworth Road) as you can't properly see if cars are overtaking the bus. There is also a bus stop opposite the Cumberworth Road junction which is also poor placement for the same reasons.
6
Traffic is controlled well, I feel. The addition of speed bumps of Cumberworth Road has slowed people down coming from the ponker lane direction and has made the road feel a lot safer.
6
The streets are very clean and the parks and open spaces are kept very tidy.
5
There are some nice walks near the park and along the trans penine trail.
Where there is greenery, the footpath ends. Walking along huddersfield Road towards Shelley is a nice walk but the footpath ends and it makes it a bit less enjoyable as cars tend to speed along that stretch of road. The same is true for the footpath on Cumberworth Road leading to pocker Lane.
776777777
Extend the footpath along Cumberworth road/ponker lane if possible to make it safer for ramblers and drivers. If possible, move the bus stops to somewhere where visibility is not impaired at a junction by a stopped bus.
21

I want to help build a better village
3
Narrow roads with very heavy traffic.Lots of parked cars, especially during school times making it difficult to navigate the main road past Shelley College.
So many roadworks recently.
No train network
42
Virtually no off road parking in the village and outside schools means roads get heavily congested. Parked cars make manoeuvring through the village, especially at busy times, very difficult.
45
Lots of beautiful countryside near us.
When I first moved here, I found it difficult to find circular walks I could do. I had to ask local dog walkers. It would be good to have an online version of the local footpaths that people can rate as they do them and download to their devices.
41
We have a small Co-Op with dreadful parking facilities that is the only place we can shop locally.
We DESPERATELY need a supermarket that’s nearer than Huddersfield town and it needs to have parking.
I hate trying to get in or out of the Co-op car park, it’s a complete bun fight, the terrain is horrendous as it’s on a hill so car doors always swing open fast and trying to get out onto the main road is so dangerous!
This is my worst gripe about Skelmanthorpe
2
I’ve tried to get information about night school adult education classes but nothing seems to be available.
There seems to be a severe lack of availability in such areas.
63
There are a couple of bars that are nice to meet in but we need more.
No restaurants or pubs serving food that are worth visiting
5
FB seem to have a good community page and I see lots of positive interactions between people on there
6
Apart from nuisance behaviour from kids, it’s a great place to live. I’ve never felt threatened but could imagine elderly people may feel intimidated at times. Usually, in my personal experience, it’s been fine though.
6
Love the hanging baskets and cleanliness of the streets. We have lovely Christmas decorations and great festive events
4
This is the first time I’ve been asked to give my input on anything to do with my village.
That said, I don’t get massively involved with the community so that could be down to me just not being aware of such invitations.
Shops. A SEVERE lack of somewhere to buy groceries. We DESPERATELY need a supermarket nearer to us than Huddersfield town centre.
The Co-Op is expensive and parking there is so limited it’s difficult to navigate in and out of and is, quite frankly, dangerous.
We need a bigger supermarket with decent parking. There are so many houses in this village now with all the new estates and the facilities to shop haven’t kept up to service these households.

Plenty of Fairly wide pavements.
Build a bye pass and stop HVGs passing through and reduce number of houses being built without improving infrastructure.
5
Fairly regular bus service into Huddersfield or Wakefield assuming one wants to bother going to either place!!
Improve Huddersfield
6
Plenty parking where I want to go but this is usually limited to trips to Supermarket and Shelley for social occasions.
Reduce the new developments until such time as the infrastructure is increased to coincide with development. Too many promises in the past have been broken by developers and the residents pick up the tab.
6
Surrounding rural location makes up for a lot of failings in other directions. The green belt is being gradually eroded by willy nilly development without proper consultation with existing residents.
Reduce building and make good infrastructure to compensate for the losses already incurred.
6
Rural location freely available to all
Limit development to grey areas and replace much of the defunct buildings and areas which serve no constructive use
6
As pensioners much of our recreation takes place in Shelley where over 400 pensioners enjoy the Over 60s group which works very much on the principal of God helps them as helps themselves. Some grants are available from various sources but these are limited
Spend more time considering the needs of the older inhabitants of which there are many. The Academy or whatever it is now called was built with the idea of it being used by the community. Initially when it was still an high school this was the case and many extra activities were carried out in the evening. Presumably cash restraints have reduced this and Central Government is guilty of witholding cash.
5
While the village has a good library and the schools are reasonable the fact that we have to go to a smaller village to" meet my needs" is an indictment on the council.
Take notice of what people tell you on these questionnaires and not use them as a ticking boxes exercise.
6
As explained most of our socialising takes place in the next village not because the council is more active their simply that the residents seem to have a more active idea of what is required leaving the complexities of council involvement out of the equation thereby reducing the risk assessment culture which would surely follow if the council was too involved.
Take note of what is required by acting on positive responses on these questionnaires.
6
Fairly good mix of housing with all price ranges being represented.
Limit development of peoples gardens Granny flats seem very quickly become Air BNB's and lack of parking within the properties results in parking on roads and pavements.

Skelmanthorpe is very hilly and some of the streets are narrow. It has a mix of old housing and new developments and not enough room is left for cars, therefore they park on the pavement and in dangerous places. And whilst it is desirable for people to use cars less, nevertheless it is the reality for people in a rural area, especially those over 60 who may not be able to use a bike or walk very far.
Close proximity to rural footpaths
Reduce dog fouling and dog noise! Think carefully before approving planning applications for large developments that cause parking/traffic problems on already overcrowded narrow streets

Easy access to local shops, restaurants, GP surgery etc. A good range of public footpaths and some cycling routes. Reasonable bus service to huddersfield. Footpaths in town pretty well maintained
Walking provision along Shelley Woodhouse Lane is poor - the marked footway comes to an abrupt an end and you are left walking in the road. This is dangerous on a road with a national speed limit.
5
When I have used the bus (occasionally) it has been on time and reliable. Well connected to Huddersfield.
4
The village is well served by a decent road network to neighbouring towns and villages and well located for the M1
The village is busy with traffic, which beyond the centre of the village often travels too fast - particularly passing Shelley College. Parking is very limited and the coop car park, is the only central parking available - it gets busy and chaotic at key times. The Post office in the store is poorly served for parking.
Reduce traffic through flow and speed of traffic with enhanced traffic calming measures.
6
A string community feel with business buildings well maintained and attractive. Lighting is good in the centre of the village.
7
Ease of access to public footpaths which access natural landscapes and provide a good variety of walking routes.
Consider he accessibility of this network - if I were in a wheel chair many of these routes would be inaccessible.
4

7
GP/health centre, library, co-op, independent shops, excellent restaurants, nice cafes and a welcoming pub. Coop, library and surgery provide useful information on community groups. Shelley college is within walking distance for many students.
Ensure additional development does not put additional strain on existing services - the village is becoming busy with traffic, cars parked at the college at pick off and drop off can be parked inconsiderately and increase the risk to pedestrians crossing the road. This seems to be much worse post covid.
5
Volunteering opportunities are advertised locally.
Unsure about work and training opportunities - other than through the existing businesses
5
A mix of residential types - in terms of size, ownership, rental and LA provision
Good community spirit - people are friendly and helpful, we have good neighbours
The above residential types have a tendency to be segregated, though often in close proximity
Support for developing homes to be more resilient for climate change - to reduce energy waste
Consider localised wind energy development - Skelmanthorpe is a really windy location
6
Good volunteering opps
Library
Friendly shop staff
Community events - through schools etc

I'm happy and comfortable to walk into the village at any time of day and find people to be friendly. Students walking to college are often friendly and a credit to themselves and the school

main road through skelmanthorpe is very attractive and looks lovely and inviting especially at christmas time and for the jubilee and coronation etc.
apply the same to side streets and roads, lots of pot holes off the main road, pavements being blocked by parked cars making it hard to pass with prams/wheelchairs often leading to walking in the road.
4
Better punctuality, more direct routes. In the past you could get a bus that went straight through on the main road to Huddersfield, now it goes through Kirkburton and Highburton taking well over 40 mins to get to town. The £2 bus fare is reasonable but would like to see a return option for say £3.50 this would offer more incentive.
4
Lots of cars parked right up to junctions on blind bends making it difficult to see oncoming traffic. As mentioned earlier cars parked on pavements make it hard to walk safely past.
6
better lighting on the cross lane playing fields to make it more usuable in winter months. My kids love playing football but in the winter its far too dark up there.
6
Better lighting at Cross Lane playing fields more benches to sit on.
64
lots of housing in skelmanthorpe
more affordable housing
The christmas light switch on is a fantastic community event I have attended every year.
It is a friendly village but not very culturally diverse, I hear lots of racist talk when out socialising in local venues, I hear homophobic language often used. Assumptions that people who live in council housing/social housing are all on benefits.

Reasonable road surfaces through Skel. Pavements not too bad.
Stop cars parking on pavements. Stop cars parking on junctions. Think about a mini roundabout by Grove pub. Take out speed bumps up Cumverworth Lane and put them by High School. Stop parents blocking road by High School morning and afternoon.
4
I don't use public transport very much so can't really comment.
1
Promote sensible parking. Ensure new developments have enough parking for residents. Control roadside parking.
5
Good childrens playground, Parkgate project underway to create small, accessible country park.
It's a semi rural environment so plenty of green space still around although these are fast being developed for housing. More facilities for children and young people to play and hang out.
7
We have fabulous countryside on our doorstep with good selection of public footpaths.
Maintenance of public footpaths and playgrounds.
5
Probably well served at the moment. My children are grown so I've not much ecperience of local facilities. My granddaughter enjoys the playground.
5
Good schools, variety of shops, library.
Need more doctors.
5
Quite a few local businesses which I'm sure employ people, there are volunteering opportunities. No experience as to whether there are training opportunities.
5
Good variety of housing, old and new, private and rental.
Really don't like the new housing developments, they look like lego land and theyre built on green fields,
5
Amongst those that have lived here a long while the community spirit is strong
For new people into the village, living in the new developments i think its more difficult. Maybe they dont want to contribute to the community. I feel we are becoming a dormitary for surrounding cities.
45
I haven't personally encountered anti social or threatening behaviour.
Dirty pavements and paths, dog dirt and litter are a major problem.
5
Countryside officer and ranger do a great job. There's a regular street cleaner. Bin men do a good job. Recycling is ok.
Bring back household glass collection. Increase type of materials collected for recycling.
5
Good parish council and councillors.
Stop developing on green fields
Somehow stop dog owners allowing their dogs to foul pavements and paths
Population has increased but not medical provision
Council stop approving bad housing developments
Encourage good dog ownership
Increase medical provision
Encourage sensible parking

Most pavements have dropped kerbs and are easy to walk on. They are usually clean. A lot of the roads have been resurfaced which is good. Someone is employed to clean the streets.
Some pavements are very narrow and they are uneven to walk on, especially if you are pushing a pram e.g. Station Road where it meets the main road. Some dog owners are not cleaning up after their dogs. More litter bins around would be a good idea.
4
We have a few good parking places e.g. Co-op, behind the Library. There are safe crossing points on the main road.
I think we have to accept that cars will have to park on part of the pavemnts on residential streets as there are now so many cars and so few places to park. Perhaps people could be made aware of using common sense so they park safely and an emergency vehicle could get up the road if necessary.
Good play areas for children.
6
There are plenty of good paths to walk around the area and ,on the whole, they are well looked after.
There are no public toilets in the area. Dog fouling is often a problem on the streets but people are putting up notices and bins to help with this.
6
There is a recently renovated play area for children and a larger one with a skate park, football field and play equipment for younger children. There is a small play area behind BaildonWay.
We never got the promised sports area when Baildon Way was built? How do you stop youth from vandalising play areas etc.?
6
We are lucky here as there are 2 first schools and an easy walk to the middle school and high school. We have a fairly good range of shops but far too many hairdressers and beauty salons!. There is a doctors, dentist, library, community centre (not used enough), 4 places of worship, a fire station,
There are so many houses being built here I worry as to how all the services - schools, doctors, dentistetc. will be able to cope.
3
There are some friendly streets around. Many people have lived in the same house for 30, 40 +years
The houses being built are so big or expensive that the ordinary local people cannot afford to buy them and have to go to Barnsley or other areas of Huddersfield to live. Many people live in houses with no drives so they will find it difficult to have an electric car and charge it?
6
We have recently had events at the cricket field which have been well attended. The U3A have a wide range of activities. There are numerous smaller groups that people can attend.
It amazes me just how many people in the village do not know about the different activities around that they could go to. We need a newsletter or something similar that everyone can access ( many older residents are not online)
6
We have a great resource with The Textile Heritage Centre. The Woven project has been extremely successful. Both have attracted people from diferent areas to come to the village.
We do need younger people or middle age people to be more active in the community. Older, retired people do so much in the area but sometimes they need younger, fitter people to also help. Some of the newer people that have moved into the new houses do not mix and are not particularly friendly.
5
Our village is well lit at night. It always feels safe in the daytime. There does seem less crime around here than in the past.
I would not walk on my own at night around the village. Groups of youth are intimidating although probably would do me no harm.
6
I think that , on the whole, our roads and pavements are in pretty good repair. The council has been resurfacing many roads. I have reported street lights out and they have been sorted fairly quickly. We do have someone who cleans the streets.
3
Nobody listened to objections to all the building of houses especially on green field sites.

I’m contributing to Chat to Shat
5
The village is a great place to live, the shops, restaurants and pub / bars make for a great sociable village. The best parts of the village are in easy walking distance from most directions.
The pavements and roads throughout the village are generally sound, although there is often litter and debris on the paths around the village and up near Shelley College. My main concern is the amount of traffic, the speed of traffic and the often unnecessary noise. Congestion on a morning is horrendous, the constant roadworks compound the congestion problem and the cars and bikes racing on weekends and evenings can be dangerous and truly awful.
6
Busses passing regularly
More council operated taxis instead of the unruly anybody’s who may or may not turn up at the moment.
1
Rare quiet moments
Discrete speed cameras, lower speed limit right through the village, speed bumps, chicanes and traffic calming. Getting safely on and off our drive can be a challenging experience. I’m fed up of angry speeding motorists passing through the village. The traffic spoils an otherwise brilliant little place to live.
5
Easy access to green areas around the edges of the village. Cows, sheep, birds and wildlife are lovely.
More roadside plants and trees, get rid of roadside weeds and unkempt trees. Sweep streets. Make footpaths through fields and green spaces more footfall friendly. Some are rocky, boggy and a nightmare to walk on.
Install cycle routes and paths to get cyclists off the bendy, hilly roads where it’s dangerous for all road users but particularly the cyclists.
4
Easy access to green spaces in close proximity to village. I guess you have to be good on you’re feet to venture on the paths, however there are some lovely walks.
The roads throughout the village are congested and noisy, I would say they are unsafe for children and the elderly. Unfortunately walking alongside the busy roads is a must to get to green spaces and the noise ruins the countryside experience
4
Green spaces that could be developed for community use are dwindling. The new housing off Cumberworth Road is an eyesore and has taken a key area that could have been a lovely community park or space.
Please plant lots of trees and greenery wherever possible throughout the village to keep noise to a minimum and the sense of being semi rural to the maximum.
Extra mature tree planting throughout and around the perimeter of the new development would be appreciated.
The parks in the village at the moment have poor play amenities and are just a congregating place for gangs of teens.
64
Not sure. Everyone I know travels away from the village to get to work.
Invest in the appearance of the area. Make the village centre clean, tidy and green.
Clean the buildings and maintain to a better standard.
6
The village was fine as it was, with a wide range of housing and a lovely community. This is a great place to live and already developed enough.
Please stop the traffic, and please stop developing every green plot by cramming more houses in.
Schools, shops, doctors, and all local services should get a helpful boost as soon enough the place will be overcrowded. We could do with some help with resurrecting some of the unused pubs into some nice social hubs.
5
Friendly folk, Yorkshire humour and some nice places to meet, eat and drink.
Better green spaces, safe seating areas, redevelopment of closed social buildings and pubs. Everywhere gets too full as it is, very soon we will need more friendly gathering places in the village. Make Skelmanthorpe cleaner, greener, safer and a nicer place to meet.
55
Generally a safe place, but I have heard grumbles about littering and antisocial behaviour in the evening.
Slow down (or redirect) the traffic to help children and elderly get about safely. Stop the littering around bus shelters and the intermittent graffiti.
All of the undesirables seem to come out in the evening and night. They speed in their cars, shout and create when walking about and leave a mess to be cleaned up the following day. I’ve lost count of the number of beer cans and bottles, fag packets and disposable vapes I’ve cleaned up on my morning dog walks.
5
The village has character and the centre area is quite nice.
Help maintaining the appearance of buildings and infrastructure. Set some boundaries with regard to the appearance of, and types of shops.
We’ve had some shockers over the years.
The village could be a clean, green and safe social space.
6
Well, this opportunity to speak is great.
This is a great way to hear the voice of local residents. Let’s hope we have more of these surveys.
It would be great to think that the area can improve through the locals making suggestions.
1. Please sort the traffic in the village, it is not a racing track or a high speed route to Huddersfield.
2. Invest in the amenities and appearance of the village. Cleanliness, maintenance and appearance could be improved and social places like the derelict pubs could be used as meeting places, cafes, restaurants, bars, to feed and amuse the growing village population.
3.Invest and improve the green spaces and paths. Make them suitable and safe for all.
The main action and starting point would be to tackle the traffic problem head on by lowering speed limits right through the village adding 2 or 3 discrete speed cameras and traffic calming measures. Speed humps right the way to the village boundaries.

Why just Skelmanthorpe & not Scissett/ Clayton West. Don't you think they are important .
Everything we hear about since the local elections is Skelmanthorpe. Presume its cos the Labour candidate lives there .

Footpaths and pavements regularly overgrown.
Road signs not visible due to trees and shrubs covering them - this causes traffic to slow abruptly to view them when the reveal themselves
Non main roads are universally potholed
Praking on pavements is rife
43
On non main roads potholes are normal and potentially damaging to vehicles
There is a lot of parking on pavements -sufficient to impede passage of visually impaired, mobility scooters, prams and pushchairs
5
Far far too much dogs mess on pavements
544
Infrastructure such as schools and surgeries have not kept pace with housing development.
Even though this is not a metropolis no public toilets are available
445
U3a has added much to the social interaction
Rotary, lions etc are really only accessible by car as none meet in the village
We have no modern village hall
53
Except when passing through on emergency calls I don't think I have ever seen a commjnity police patrol!
5
Reporting of potholes is relatively easy and repairs are quite prompt BUT they are temporary and need redoing within months.
There is a lot of vegetation overgrowth impinging on pavement space -especially problematic during school transit times.

It's a very walkable village with almost every amenity required available
Encourage people to walk or cycle the mile max to the shops, new housing has dramatically increased cars in the village centre and people queueing to park cause blockages.
Have a 20mph speed limit on the main road through the village.
5
Seems better since the inception of the Denby Dart service according to friends who use it.
2Not a lot
Discourage car use for local shopping. Discount for arriving by bike :) Add bike parking.
5
It's not bad as is
Could be tidied up a bit. Maybe narrow the road on the nice Shat strip to slow cars and add street seating outside bars and businesses. The strip is coming into it's own of late and more outdoor space is needed.
6
Loads of natural space round the village
Stop building on it ...
5
seems to be ample
7
Nothing missing except a bank
Get the Windmill re-opened!
6
Lots of hidden businesses and the strip seems to be adding something to the service economy in the evenings.

We have lots of footpaths. Good access on pavements (apart from a couple that are very narrow)
More access to cycling without traffic or with cycle lanes to make it safer to cycle on the road.
4
Bus route and buses are ok
Cancellations - buses not turning up without any notification on the TransGo app
3
Parking is always a problem. New housing often only has 1-2 spaces. Big cars - teenage/young adult drivers who cannot afford their own house so still live at home. Old houses without any driveways. All new housing developments should have car parks at entrance for everyone to use as extra parking provision.
4
Love old buildings and walls etc - we have lots of those!
Always need more green space to access.
6
I use all local footpaths to walk my dog
I know you have worked hard to keep paths free of undergrowth but still an issue around the village. Also, some footpaths difficult to use due to farmer locking gates - 5ft high stiles without access through for dogs.
4
Good park play space
Teens tend to like basketball/volleyball/netball - perhaps better rings on poles in parks
3
Services offered are good
Access to services not always so good. Getting appts - really hard sometimes to get appt. Or speak to anyone at these places as they are very busy
55
Why does no one build new Bungalows or Retirement type housing. Looking to downsize in Shat in next year or two. Want a new property but so many 3 storey properties being built. I will not want 2 staircases when I am older. Scarborough just built a small development of single storey housing - looked amazing. Also lots of very large houses built - what about our youngsters.

Residents are respectful to one another whilst driving in the village and slow down/allow others to pass safely but this is becoming more difficult due to amount of cars parked in incorrect places
Stop car’s parking in front of Co-Op and directly on the corner by the library.
It is dangerous and will cause an accident. Stop cars parking on footpaths- this is damaging the footpath for pedestrians.
Cars are still racing through the village at over 30mph.
New Street is full of patched up potholes making cycling increasingly difficult and dangerous
5
A good variety of shops and services , some good buildings and open spaces. Play Areas and paths to walk from village to village
Dropped kerbs provide accessibility
Stop mindless vandalism which is creeping into the village spoiling these areas for children.
Add some more places to sit for elderly residents.
New Street is difficult to traverse when it is time for bin collection- pavement on one side is very sloped and causes problems for elderly residents

5
Cross Lane open space has lovely views and walks
This space suffers with litter and dog fouling on occasions.
6
Scissett Gym and KAL classes are fabulous. Excellent staff and instructors keeping us fit and a good sense of community spirit and welcoming attitude.
Monthly passes are affordable and so many things to do for all

Scissett Baths and Gym excellent place for all.

There's too many cars on pavements when trying to move about the area so you risk your life by walking in the road .
2
If you need to use taxis you can't get a taxi for the morning or afternoon when school runs are on with the taxis working them .not everyone can go on a bus and not everyone drives.
1
No one seems to care were they park in this area most of the pavements get taken up leaving it hard for people to get to a to b some times.
When your disabled it's harder too to get about safely , I've seen lack of respect from some drivers and it's been like a game trying not to get him by a car.
3
It would be great if there was more seating around for people if the parks were kept a eye on they get destroyed very fast by the youth who have nothing to do in this area.
4
Enjoying the out doors would be good if there was less dog mess problems , and also rubbish not dumped causing rats.
I would love to see more things set up for children adults with disabilities groups so on .
4
The area could improve on how it treats disabled children and adults .
4
It would be nice to see more community events like the kings coronation it felt like you was part of the community really nice.
You get a small amount of people that are amazing with disabled people in the village .
Sadly there is a large amount too that , make you feel like you shouldn't be living in the village if you are a little different.

Easy access to footpaths in the countryside, lots of different places nearby to walk
Some areas ie Ponker Lane with no pavement and lots of traffic. At times, the hedgerow is overgrown so restricting the amount of free space to walk.

Consider improvement for walking from Skelmanthorpe to Scissett Middle School - safe crossing point at the bottom of Skelmanthorpe & restriction of parked/queuing cars down Busker Lane.

A lot of parking on pavements so restricted access with wheelchairs and pushchairs

I like that the Holmfirth - Wakefield route is now every hour but that needs to run later in the day
New buses are great. More reliable and clean. Charging units etc
More regular D1 bus to Huddersfield on an evening. Back to once every 30 mins
Later buses to holmfirth
Restart the Barnsley bus again
Bus to Denby Dale also doesn’t connect very well with the trains.
4
Doesn’t affect me
5
Well lit streets.
Relatively clean
More for the teenagers to do
They have the skate park and community centre but still some wandering
7
Lots of opportunities to get out into the local fields and paths
4
Reduce prices of one off swimming at Scissett Baths
5
The doctors surgery is excellent. Very hard working people their especially the nurses and practitioners
More regular bus service
Currently very reliable just not frequent enough
52
Range of housing stock
Just don’t build any more
7
Great bars and restaurants
Tipsy Cow Volare’s in particular.
Shat Strip isn’t a name I especially like but the principle of it is great
7
I have been here 20+ years. Lots of people have lived all their lives. Strong sense of community. People say hello when you walk through the village.
New people coming in seem to quickly settle in to this

More regular bus service to enable people to visit the village and leave on public transport
Bus company put on more buses

1
Less traffic and consistent traffic calming. The new housing estates have traffic calming but there is nothing on Huddersfield road which has just as much right to road safety as the new people in the village because people drive very fast up and down from the grove pub to Shelley high school
2
More bus stops and easier access for disabled
1
Too many cars due to massive influx of new housing.parked on pavements so people have to walk around on the road.

No parking on pavements at all. Consistent traffic calming everywhere not just for new housing estates. People who have lived here a long time are also entitled to safety.
2
More green spaces and less new housing.
1
There is no natural space as all taken by new housing
1
No good green play areas which are clean, free of litter and dog waste and therefore safe to use.
1
Have equal local services for people who have lived here for a long time as well as new people
1
There are none.
1
There are no cheap houses to buy for young people and social housing is limited and difficult to get. Stop developers building large upmarket expensive houses which give them a big profit but doesn't help the community at all
4
There are some clubs I believe.
Publicize what's available
2
Not sure there is any sense of pride in the village anymore. dog mess and litter everywhere. Too many new houses and people who don't care.
1
Don't feel safe at all and would never dare go out or answer the door after dark.
1
Get rid of litter and dog mess and care for all people equally. Create green spaces and stop new housing.
1
Not listened to at all. Have been telling police and local council about excessive traffic speed for years. Objected formally to all new housing. Made no difference.
Traffic speed on Huddersfield road from grove pub to high school.
Equal road safety for ALL areas.
No more new housing unless affordable
Traffic calming on Huddersfield road from grove pub to high school. Stop pavement parking. Clean up litter and stop people leaving dog mess. No more new housing. Provide safe green space

There are plenty of off road footpaths for able bodied people & cyclists. Lots of good dog walks. You don’t have to walk/cycle far to be away from traffic, houses etc
The pavements through Skelmanthorpe are very narrow in places making it difficult for wheelchairs & prams. It’s very hilly. As far as I’m aware there are no off road foot paths/ tracks that would be easy to follow in a wheelchair or with a pram/ pushchair. Wider pavements/ footpaths clear of stones/mud etc might kelp.
5
Good reliable bus service.
Not sure what else people would use.
Disabled parking in the Co-Op & Doctors surgery. Couple of pedestrian crossings .
Bike stands for people to fasten bikes to whilst browsing/shopping/ visiting hairdressers etc
Disabled crossings & 20MPH speed through the centre.

Shops and amenities are close together and easy to use.
Accessing the main village centre is difficult on foot because pavements along commercial road are narrow and cars are often parked partially on the footpath so wheelchairs and pram’s will have difficulty negotiating the footpath.
5
Fairly reliable bus service at regular intervals
Three former bus routes have been combined so the journey to Huddersfield or Denby Dale takes much longer than previously. We often drive into Huddersfield rather catch a bus.v
5
Commercial Road give’s good access to the M1 or to buses and trains from Huddersfield, by car.
Very heavy traffic along commercial road, especially trucks, parking is poor with the main car park heavily used for co-op customers and the doctors surgery. Difficult to see what could be done with limited space in the village.
3
Countryside is easily accessible, views from some areas are good.
Playing fields by cross road are useful. Newly established park in middle of the village is an improvement with trees planted but not much seating for families.
Where possible plant mature fast growing trees along streets.
The mound/slag heaps was going to be subject to tree planting, view points, picnic areas and seating. Some trees were planted but seem to have perished due to lack of water/care.
If the mound development is revived this could make up for a severe shortage of parkland and greenery in the village.
Village is surrounded by fields and a couple of small woods are accessible (blacker and wither woods).
The bridal path from the village to denby dale is a safe if somewhat rocky, uneven walk.
The 2 small wood’s that are accessible lack shady spots to sit and enjoy nature, could the council work with the woodland trust to improve wither woods with benches in some of the more pleasant areas.
Roads and paths in the village are a dog toilets. Dog owners pick up dog “dirt” the result is tied in a plastic bag which is then left on the ground or hung on a tree. The dog muck will rot but the plastic bag will not? Could bags be made available for dog owners which would rot away in a few weeks.
5
Good sports fields with a skateboard area, play area for children and a cricket field plus squash club. Library and community centre also a useful resource for adults and juniors.
TLS well-being gym a good resource.
Disabled people do not seem to be well catered for
6
Most services needed in a small village are available.
Main problem is access and footpaths being too narrow with vehicles parked on the path
6
Thriving village with friendly people. The village has improved recently with new ventures opening such as bars restaurants and cafe
The village is expanding rapidly with hundreds of new houses being built. Most or all houses are large luxury homes with small gardens so there is little opportunity for the young people in the village to buy a house. The Dawson mill site will comprise 3-4 bed high spec homes.
Will local schools and amenities be able to cope with the influx of people and cars, and what is being done about it
4
Community spirit is high as seen in the Christmas tree lights funding by some volunteers and donors.
Consider new housing developments and how services will cope. Skelmanthorpe Family Doctors have done very well in difficult circumstances but GPs already have too many patients on their books and shorter consultations. Where will hundreds more people be able to access health care
Village is friendly and welcoming with a good mix of food and drink venues
Two former pubs are standing idle, the windmill has apparently been purchased for what purpose? The Chartist in the village centre is shut up but boarders on the park/playground so could surely be developed or rebuilt as a community resource rather than left to rot
6
Great sense of identity, people are proud to come from Shat with traditions of Shat luggoil biters. Shat strip businesses.
The influx of people shows the popularity of the area
Not much
6
Feel safe in the village at any time of day
Traffic at one end of the village moves too fast appearing to travel at 40-50 mph in a 30 mph zone. Speed camera?
Untidy gardens and scruffy buildings in some areas.
4

Most of the village is good but the area near Dawsons mill is not and there is a property called something villa that has been empty and overgrown for the last 15 years.
Ensure neglected properties are brought up to standards
5
Area near my home is good near the Baildon development could do with some seats and bins for dog walkers.
Get rid of the awful green pre-fabricated building or upgrade it into a community space near the Baildon estate.
5
There are parks to walk round and there is a community centre
The name Skelmanthorpe Youth and community centre implies it is more for young people why not just call it Skelmanthorpe Community Centre and have a proper website page advertising what happens there.
Also the council buildings what are they used for no concise information sharing area
4
The work force at the health centre needs increasing to cope with demand.
The dentist is private
The Library has limited opening times
5
Good choice of independent shops
Advertising local jobs perhaps at the council building
6
Good mix of housing but there needs to be more affordable homes and also for rent not just big detached homes.
There is a good community spirit people will stop and chat

Coop and doctors. We have sufficient resourses that you would not need to leave village.

We are blessed with rural walks which can all be accessable to all

Good pram walks with good selection
More frequent buses
Better lighting on pathways through park.
1
Not a regular user as too restricted
More frequent
3
Good parking
Better lighting from community centre to village would encourage more to park and use community centee

Parks are clean and modern
More advertisement and community centre used more

The derelict factory was an eyesore
7
How quick i can be in woodland and open space

7
The new park is a great new addition
Need more options for teenagers the skate park could be better lit and not so far away from main road
7
The school system is fantastic as in having a three tier pyramid
Worry that we will make short term reactions due to a drop in birthrate. We need to have visibility to plans for school looking at housebuilds and birthrate.
3
It is growing and a up and coming place to live
More teenage places

3
Costly as desirable place to live
I feel hard as cant mass build as out green space needs preserving.
Build more on brownfield like the factory should be encouraged
6
Good community spirit with good events planned by volunteers
Christmas lights switch on
Incentives to support more - maybe a summer food fayre or more seasonal events like lights switch on. Free to all
7
The spirit of village a d community
We use our community centre more. Promote more to all ages

3
Seeing kids litter pick and have pride in where they live
Patha need to be maintained and hedges trimmed

A mini bus joining the HD8 villages together circular route.
Reliable train service from Denby Dale to Sheffield.
4
Small car park in middle and end of village.
Stop cars from blocking pavements. I don't know how any wheelchair user can possibly manage in the village. Always cars blocking pavements.
6
Generally well cared for buildings and gardens. Pride in village with flower baskets etc.
More litter picking in green fields and playing field.
Too many derelict buildings eg old pub on main road through village.
Should use special powers to force land owner to renovate or sell to someone who will. Same with windmill pub.
7
Easy access to green open space and woodland.
Stop allowing development after development on greenfield sites.
2
Outdoor play area in centre of village.
Squash club.
Cricket club
We need more facilities for every age group!
Potential to turn Cross Lane park into a really good facility with a little investment. Resurface and renew the basketball court. Build a small cafe and toilets. Provide table tennis tables.
Need indoor leisure centre space as well.
Facilities are inadequate for the population of village
4
Good schools but Iver subscribed.
Fund gp surgery properly to meet need.
Fund schools properly.
Don't make people have to travel into Huddersfield centre for job centre appointments - it is expensive for someone with low income. Provide outreach appointments

Response to letter I got in the mail.
I will like to support and be involved in the areas I live.
5
Easy assess to all major roads.
No real hold ups on usual commute to work days.
Roads are narrow in Shat.
Parking on either side of the road does not help with Shat Traffic.
Solid double lines in Shat might help with traffic flow.
Parking where the Pigs are on the main road is VERY dangerous.

75
Alternate routs to were I ned to go are available, which is good.
the main road in Shat, in from of Little India & Shat Travel can be difficult to navigate when cars are parked on both sides.
The road is very narrow in places and I fear for my wing mirror some times while I drive.
Solid double lines my stop people from parking in the narrow areas.
Backing out of Little India's or Baz's carpark is an adventure when the road is busy.
6
Great new kids area and walking path across from Baz's BRILLIANT!
75
Great variety of recreational areas.
Some of the ball courts, skateboard parks might be ready for a refresh.
75
Lots of variety of shops.

I like that there are mostly if not all independently owned.

I also like that the fact that most of the production companies are hidden from plan sight.

So I think their is good access to jobs.
Not aware of many volunteer opportunities other than Scouts and Girl guides. If their is nor marketing might have to be done.

No training opportunities that I am aware of. I would like to provide some training sessions (better Sleep, Well-being and resilience, mindfulness, etc) in my areas but am nit sure how to go about doing or or who to team up with.
6
Great variety of houses
Potentially getting to a point of over crowding.
5
I think there are a lot of hidden Gems in Shat where people can meet and socialize.
I just don't know how to access them.

Know there are WhatsApp groups but don't know how to join.

I removed myself from all social media so feel a bit out of the loop.

I would like to suggest that there needs to be serious talks regarding opening a Youth Club in Skelmanthorpe.

My grandson and a lot of his friends have no where to go apart from the 2 parks n Skelmanthorpe. As they are 10,11 and 12 year olds this seems to be annoying to parents with younger children who want to access the play areas.

I feel a youth club in Skelmanthorpe would benefit not only the children in those age groups, but it would also benefit the wider community, reduce anti social behaviour, and keep the youngsters from straying away from the play areas.

As the community has grown considerably over the years (3 new housing estates being built) I feel now is the time to give these kids the opportunity to express themselves in a more positive way, rather than the community frowning upon them.

I do hope you can take this matter seriously.
I’m happy to help if need be.

Thanks
Rachel Firth

The main issue is creating a space for children in the age brackets of 10-15 year old. They have nothing to do, and often get a bad reputation for having nothing to do.

From one end of village - station road - access is excellent.
From the Windmill side of village access is difficult/dangerous no footpath on the left and narrow footpath on the right and difficult negotiation exacerbated by vehicles parked on the footpath so wheelchair and pram users may need to go onto the busy road.
Stop vehicles parking on footpaths
6
Regular reliable bus service
Due to cutting the service from three routes into Huddersfield to one the journey takes twice as long as before so we often use the car
2
Some parking available for the co-op and doctors
With limited space in a an old narrow village not easy to find solutions
4
The park/playground next to former Chartist pub and sports field with skatepark are useful
Streets offer little shade, not many shady seating areas.

Could plant trees where possible and try to improve blacker and wither woods which are scruffy at present

The mound/slag heap was to be developed with trees, view points and seating/picnic areas, needs to be done
3
Countryside and views around the village
Need more green space with better access
6
Playing fields, playground and cricket club
The Chartist pub has stood empty for a few years and is next to the park and playground, could be developed to add more amenities
3
Good schools, health services, sports clubs etc
Need to expand facilities hugely to cope with the rapidly growing population. GPs have too many patients and too little time for consultations, how will SFD cope with several hundred more people when there is no more government funding for health?
5
Thriving village with good mix of business and light industry
Expanding village population will need more opportunities for work, need to attract businesses to set up in the village
4
Village centre has older fairly affordable homes
Most new developments are 3-4 bed luxury homes with small gardens so very little chance for local people to buy a house.

Some Older homes in the village are uncared for with room for improvement in gardens. The areas in front of the library/council office and co-op car park are a weed filled eyesore and don’t set an example to anyone
7
Lovely interactive community with bars coffee bars and community place’s for people to meet.

Volunteers have raised money for Christmas lights assisted by the local fire station
7
People are proud to identify with Shat with history of textiles and mining and Shat lugoil biters
Development of the aforementioned mound would be a pleasant space for picnics, galas, performances by the brass band etc
6
Always feel safe at present.
If unsociable behaviour was a problem in future there is no police presence to discourage such problems.

Used to be two named policewomen available.
5
Regular street sweeper on commercial road

Bin collection is fairly reliable

KMC responds to requests for pest control or bin collection problems
Dog dirt is here there and everywhere - more bins for deposit of bags which are usually left on the ground or hanging from trees
5This chat is good
Stop parking on footpaths

More trees, green spaces seating in green spaces

Take measures to cope with growing population especially health services
Signs to discourage footpath parking and penalties for persistent offenders

Develop the mound to give a needed green space

2 bus routes, one to Wakefield/ Holmfirth, second Huddersfield.
Trains from Denby Dale are good if old, when running, allowing trips to Sheffield or leeds.
frequency could be improved. bus route to Huddersfield is tortuous and slow. Neither Wakefield or Huddersfield are worth visitng for shopping. A new bus route to Barnsley would offer a much better bus route and destination.
Rail frequency improved. Might be a problem with single track. Provide toilets particulaly at Denby Dale station.
3
road network and destinations
maintain roads to an adequate standard. not so at present. ensure traffic volumes do not increase. stop building houses in the village which is in danger of being totally urbanised. The road cleaner has done a good job along the centre of the village
Some pavements need repairing, and some places there is overgrowing weeds.
There is often dog poo along Elm Street heading for the Pilling Lane 'dog walk' there is a dog poo bin and bags at both ends of Elm Street.
A lot of houses/streets were built before cars were invented/popular, and therefore do not have drives (or do not use them) meaning people park on the pavements
5
I do not use public transport, but there seem to be plenty of busses on the road
I think that pensioners would be willing to pay a small contribution to the cost of running the busses, making the fares cheaper to the people who have to pay!

A lot of the roads are in need of repair due to the amount of potholes
The drains at either side of the road on Cumberworth Road are full of sediment which has possibly washed down from the building site at the top of the hill.

Lots of public footpaths around village.
Issue with parking on pavement on Commercial Road.
Issue with speeding cars on Commercial Road and vehicles not stopping at pedestrain crossings.
7
Excellent service with the new buses.
3
Three car parks in village
Change speed limit on Commercial Road to 20 mph or change existing crossings to ones with traffic lights.
5
Excellent new play equipment in park.
Reduce speed of traffic on main road.
7
Excellent open spaces around village which are maintained to a high standard by the Countryside Team.

The environment is good. The placing of 2 new park benches has helped - I can rest on them when walking.
7
The bus service is good but travelling to Huddersfield is too much as far as walking around the town. There is a good bus service to and from Barnsley and the market there.
5
There is a lot of traffic. The paths have been replaced and the roads resurfaced. This has encouraged a lot of young people to use their push bikes on the cul-de-sacs with the bungalows such as Smithy Place. It would be good if council properties could have driveways so cars are off the road..
6
The buildings are not attractive but Skelmanthorpe is okay.
7
There are plenty of natural spaces. I used to walk over to Denby Dale and all over when younger.
5
We could do with more social activity/ somewhere for older people locally for example afternoon bingo at the community centre
7
We have everything we need but food prices are high at present
4
Average score as felt it not applicable
1
Nice bungalow but younger people have affected the balance, the bungalows were built for older people and my bungalow is in need of repairs/ some repairs have been sub standard.
5
There are good activities locally if you can get about
7
Its very positive
7
I feel safe but I have had my door handle tried in the night.
6
The alley by Smithy Place is a main cut through to shops & doctors used by all ages. It is full of dog excrement.
7
The staff at the Pantry at the community centre are very helpful with queries as well, in particular when it was covid.
I could do with repairs/ improvements to my property - radiators & pointing to follow up with the Housing Service.
As above - follow up with the Housing Service.

Nothing is that great
Footpaths are very slim especially key pavements to schools. There are no bike lanes
4
I don’t use public transport so can’t comment
2
Parking is terrible can’t drive anywhere without stopping for parked cars let alone walk anywhere with them parked on the pavements
52
Lots of open spaces
Lots of dog poo
Footpaths uneven and not accessible to the elderly or disabled.

Community centre muga unusable
5
The new park is great
Permanent football goals would be great at the football field and a proper basketball court
5
We have a wide selection
5
Would be great to add more retail spaces along the Main Street perhaps convert houses.
5
Lack of 3 bed homes
All property quite expensive
5
Lots available

Inaccessible footpaths for all
Dog poo
Funding to build footpaths that are easy to walk / use a wheelchair on.

Wider pavements and discouraging cars parked up on the pavement. Improved clean up of dog excrement on pavements. Route to Scissett dangerous for kids. Cars travel far too fast along Commercial Road and round village generally.
Do not use so unable to comment
3

3
the proximity to any shop (aside from a butcher)
the amount of cars parked on pavements stopping pedestrians to safely walk
the width (or lack) of pavements in places
the speed on the main 'arteries' (Commercial road, Station road and Ponker) - most of it is passing traffic that is not welcome
5
we have some public transport and it's fairly reliable
cheaper and more of it
1
too much passing traffic at speed on the main roads
pavement are littered with parked cars
forbid cars to park on pavement and enforce it - this would reduce the speed of passing cars
5
nice and pleasant place to live,
I want to highlight the XMAS lights!!!
5
a lot of green spaces in and around the village
let's keep them open to the public and wild
more fruit trees like next to the chippy but better maintained
wouldn't be great if the streets where lined with fruit trees ?
5
football, cricket pitches
squash courts
swimming pool at scisset
maybe we could add a padel court in the racket club
make sure that scissett swimming pool stays accessible - it is dear
5
the library is great
I am very happy with our GP
it would be great if we could recycle glass in the green bin
5
the village is a mix of residential and business that are 'in keeping' with the village (aside for that estate to the right of station road when going downhill)
better / faster broadband access would make working from home more of an option
5
the new estates are nestled around the village, therefore walking to the shops, bars, and services is possible.
We need to ensure there are snickets in the Weaver's development to ensure, among others, that kids can get to college easily
it would be good if the homes built were of good quality and not entirely on top of another
finally, parking for those houses must be provided on their property, not on the street of the estate or it will become a huge carpark
5
the #shatstrip is a winner
allow bars & restaurants on the street to use the 'parking spaces' in front of their business as terraces. This would require slower traffic on Commercial Rd
5
loads of community led initiatives (brass band, XMAS light, gin festival, etc)
We need more and the council should be supportive and encourage.
I tried to organise a 12h club run around the village and the council started by telling me how expensive closing the roads would be. The council should encourage the village organising stuff in our village rather than stopping us doing us for our community
5
not aware of much problem
better lighting in places ? a local PC ?
3
bins are not emptied in a timely manner and parking on pavement makes it look untidy
I love the way the council building is decorated / planted
2
people in Kirklees don't care about Shat
They give or refuse planning application on the flimsiest of evidence and clearly never step foot in our village
- on pavement parking
- speed of passing traffic
- glass recycling in green bin
- forbid parking on pavement and enforce it (paint bays where appropriate?)
- 20 mph speed limit + speed camera
- tell KMC to add glass to the green bin

Some pavements are quite narrow, possibly difficult for people with prams
4
Relatively frequent denby darts buses
Difficult to get to local train stations quickly without driving as local buses take long routes
6
Never seen long queues of traffic in shat, lots of parking for the high street
575
It would be great if shat had its own gym
6
Accessible doctors surgery
4
I think a lot of work/training happens outside of the town, but hard to access unless driving by car
65
Love the tipsy cow bar

Side roads are generally quiet. Crossing by coop helps but some drivers always ignore you standing there.
Stop cars from parking on the pavements and blocking the pavements on side roads.
20mph on side roads in skelmanthorpe?
Traffic calming on the main street to slow traffic down.
5
Regular bus service into Huddersfield.
A quick route into Huddersfield, takes too long on the bus although to be fair I avoid using the bus, I couldn't manage without my car living in Skelmanthorpe.
4
The main road is very busy. Can be hard to cross at times.
Lots of parked cars,.block pavements on the side roads.
Cars generally go too quickly.
Traffic calming I think?
A car went through the wall not long ago on the road out to the school where the kids walk to the junior school so something needs to be done there to slow traffic down as it goes down the hill and around the bend.

20 mph speed limit in middle section of skelmanthorpe? On the main road, around coop for example.
4
Buildings and environment is generally in good repair.
A community allotment maybe would be nice.
More flowers and trees in skelmanthorpe would be nice.
A community meeting point would be nice, I know they are trying with the community centre.
7
We are surrounded by countryside here so we are very lucky.
4
It's good that we have a library but the hours don't work when you work full time.
6
Yep good access to services in shat
6
Shat is a busy village with lots of businesses although one closed recently.
A car is essential in shat, I have to travel for work.
7
Good range of affordable housing in shat
Develop the community side and intergenerational mixing.
4
I am not sure.
I live on my own and find that there aren't any places I feel comfortable to go on my own to meet people which I can access in my spare time. So community spaces like an allotment would be nice.
6
Shat has a good buzz about it, it's a nice village.
Shat could make more of its history with some info boards.
A local walking or running group might be nice.
7
I feel safe here
Not sure, it's pretty good.
6
Pretty clean
There is some litter about which makes it look scruffy.
4
Not sure how I could voice concerns although more to the point I don't have time with work to.do this or to worry too much about stuff.

4
Plenty of rural walks.
Quiet roads.

Deal with Cars parking on pavements which makes it difficult for pram / wheelchair users.
Areas with dog muck not cleared up (not sure that anything can be done about this as there are bins to use but people don’t).

Bus routes to town and Holmfirth.
Take seriously, missed service's.
5
Stop parking opposite T-junction's getting in and out is difficult, with cars passing on the wrong side of the road.
67663
Basic shopping requirements.
Less basic shops. More higher end businesses.
645764
Excessive housing development is not matched with improvement in infrastructure.
Help with attracting businesses to the village.
94
27/6/2023SkelmanthorpeHD8 9B65 - 74Female
Because I care about where I live!
5
Relatively good access into open countryside.
Get parked cars off pavements - they cause an obstruction for pavement users and hinder sight lines when crossing the road.

Some pavements could do with widening. Crossings need repainting.
4
I get a free bus pass. Buses are comfortable and clean generally.
Really need to look at interconnectivity - between villages, between train stations and the area generally to places of employment. Linear routes only - they need to intersect with circular routes. I shop in Barnsley rather than Huddersfield and times of the limited service is NOT shown in bus shelters.....what's the point of extending the little weekend bus and not putting times in the bus shelters? Not everyone accesses buses online.
3
Tends to be a quite period around lunchtime.
Stop HGVs using the B6116. When I moved into the valley in 1982 Busker Lane/B6116 had a 7.5 ton weight limit with less traffic... Signs at bottom of Busker Lane were damaged on several occasions then never replaced....what's happened? B6116 already operating over its design capacity and parked cars obstruct the flow of traffic and visibility. Noise and pollution increased considerably over the 20 years I've lived in Skelmanthorpe.

We need speed indicator signals from Shelley College and again down the hill into the village.

We have always needed a village large village car park but useful land (eg. the former Council Depot on Station Road) has been sold off and used for building). There has been no 'master planning' of any of our villages by the LPA and this is now desperately needed.
5
Love the trees around my part of Skelmanthorpe although their existence seems to be challenged by householders who are not as appreciative of the natural environment.

Like the dry stone walls, stone buildings.

Appreciate that some pavement surfaces have recently been improved.
More trees should be designated as TPOs.

Stop the erection of high, lapped wooden fencing adjoining public footpaths and roadways. Many of these do not meet LA criteria being over 1m in height.

What spoils Skelmanthorpe is the poor and inappropriate design of new dwellings in particular that do not architecturally link to the general heritage of the area (eg. the flats and town houses on Baildon Way). LPA has/is allowing our local heritage to be destroyed instead of being re-purposed eg. Greenside Mill/Dawsons Mills.
6
Easy access to open countryside and a footpath network....I can walk for miles from my door in countryside which if it were in the SE would be designated as an AONB I'm sure.
Stop motor vehicles using Gilthwaites Lane and Pilling Lane.

Provide more allotments, particularly at the western end of Skelmanthorpe - again a suitable site off Strike Lane has been lost to house building.

Perhaps more street seats for older people.
55
Would like to see another butcher's shop opening and pet shop.
53
A building moretorium on any new large-scale development. In the 20 years I've lived in Skelmanthorpe, there has been continuous building somewhere in the village. Skelmanthorpe is over-developed now and at the point where its infra-structure is failing regularly. The housing that has been built has still left gaps in the DDPC housing area for affordable housing to buy and rent for young and old alike.....a sad waste of green fields and greenbelt.
654
Need PCSOs back on patrol. Drugs and anti-social behaviour evident in recent years.
55
We now have an excellent local Councillor in Cllr. Tim Bamford who gets things done at Ward level with Kirklees Council which I feel has a very poor record of serious community involvement.

Urban streets generally quiet, although Commercial Rd is busy. Doctors, shops etc fairly accessible.
Too much pavement parking restricting access for prams and wheelchairs.
Access to Scissett Middle School down Busker Lane not good. Narrow and uneven pathway with a low kerb.
No continuous footway up Cumberworth Rd.
20mph limit on Commercial Rd would be good.
3
Decent service into Wakefield.
Service into Huddersfield probably frequent enough but slow
2
Generally good footpaths apart from dog mess
Stop pavement parking. Not sure why people do this, road widths generally ok.
20mph on Commercial Rd.
Traffic only going to get worse with new housing.
Provision for cycling abysmal but not sure how this could be improved given the space available.
3
Green spaces readily accessible
Keep the litter picker employed he is doing a good job.
Push to plant more wild flowers needs continuing.
Use money from house builders to improve infrastructure.
5
Good access to open countryside.
Dog fouling a problem everywhere. More pick up your dog mess notices?
5
Play area opposite the post office very good.
Possibly incorporate a play area at the Park Gate site.
6
Everything I could need is here(apart from a bank).
Not sure.
5
Plenty going on with U3A and opportunities to volunteer.
Good opportunities to volunteer with Dave Wilde the countryside officer.
Make Skelmanthorpe an attractive place to live and this will attract people who will generate opportunities.
4
Decent mix of housing.
Not sure.
6
Good U3A and other organisations.
Up to individuals to make use of the opportunities.
6
Strong sense of identity reinforced by local organisations and events such as the cricket club, brass band, Christmas lights and library.
Parish council to continue to support these organisations
6
Good street lighting. Generally very little graffiti or vandalism.
Police presence but that is never going to happen.
Continual vigilance.
6
Litter picker a good thing.
Publicise more the activities of Dave Wilde to get more volunteers involved.
4
Parish council meetings open to the public
Publicise meetings more in the parish magazine. Problem as ever is getting people to take part.
Dog fouling.
Footpaths on Buskar Lane and Cumberworth Rd.
Pavement parking.
Dog warden, education.
Get money from builders to improve infrastructure.
Introduce by law re pavement parking

Chat in Shat, im working so can't make the dates
6
Wide pavements, zebra crossing. Traffic lights near Shelley college.
We need yellow lines on station road near the new houses, as there are already double parked cars now and new residents will cause more issues for people walking and driving. Wing mirrors have been recently clipped off with all of the builders parking near the building site already and more road rage with tooting and cars being scratched, if this is what will come before people move in, we need to put them now.
4Buses
Trains are always cancelled from Denby Dale to Huddersfield then to Leeds. I work once a month in Leeds and they are always being cancelled from Huddersfield to Leeds and Liverpool. It's effecting my job. I can't come into the office. Even from Wakefield to Leeds they are cancelked. Transpenine can't tell me why.
1
It's awful and getting worse
More yellow lines. At the top of station road near the pub, cars shouldn't be able to park there as cars can't queue. Its dangerous.
Coming from Emley down the country lane there should be speed bumps or signs down to 20 miles as its too tight for 2 cars and they speed after driving the country lanes. There was recently a car crash into the wall the car was sideways as they were going too fast for the tight bend onto the bottom of station road.
Cars shouldnt be allowed to park 72 hours in the car parks. People leave 2nd cars in there due to this so its always fulll and you can't then shop. This then impacts the drs as people park there instead
7
Beautiful as long asmore houses aren't built on green belt
Stop building more houses near/on station road. Taking the beautiful green belt fields away
7
Beautiful park gate, this should be untouched apart from keeping it not over grown
Keep it trimmed back and do not build on it
6
Its nice to have a play area near basildon way, just a shame its small
7
I love what we have and the shops
Be concious that every new house impacts drs and the waiting for appts is now a week when i moved into the village last year is was the next day.
7
Lots of village shops and volare is great at hiring kids
7
Thrre are lots of houses, persimmon and other housing companies.
We don't need any more housing at the moment as lots empty still not sold and more being built on saville road
7
Cricket club has a great community spirit. The Christmas lights switch on is amazing and could have even more stalls wuth market stalls set up
7Great6
Everyone friendly and welcoming
77
Parkgate has a group and the community centre has events
1)Trains into Leeds not being continuously cancelled
2) Parking and speeds on station road have got worse.
3) Parking in the co-op car park should be a maximum of 3/ 4 hours to allow people to get a space for the shops.
Yellow lines, change the time you can park on the car parking signs instead of the 72 hours they currently are. Some cars never move from the car park.
Speed bumps/lower speed limit coming from Emley onto Station road around the tight river junction

Maybe improved pavements and more pedestrian crossings.

The area of concern for me is walking up/ down busker hill. The pathway can be busy at times when school starts / finishes and heavy traffic. Speed restrictions or further pedestrian crossing would help.
4
Not affordable, reduced costs would encourage people to use more.
3
The village has increased in numbers dramatically as new housing developments have emerged. More parking is required.
564
There is a couple of parks, but more space gif the under 16’s with facilities/ sports area would be beneficial.
4
Definitely room for improvement. The village has grown so quickly this is having an impact on services
5
Again with the increase to people in the community, there is an opportunity for more businesses which would then drive opportunities for additional employment.
55555
Really could make the place look amazing, maybe more flower baskets, uniform shop singable, more benches. The potential for this village is huge.
4
More social area for children

Bringing to life the village and showing the potential it has to be amazing

Improved services.

I drive and choose to do that due to poor local public transport links
More regular and consistent public transport
43
One way down gib lane would be loads safer and double yellow lines in some areas as people just dump cars and you nearly crash into them or can’t see when coming out of side roads.
5
Park generally, loads of areas of interest and the local history group
The derelict buildings need compulsory orders as they are beautiful but a mess and unsafe. Clearing of the new park as condoms and fag ends are not great to navigate on a Sunday morning with a small child. More dog poo bins as the walk to school is awful
7
It’s beautiful here, loads of places to walk
Less constant building of houses that don’t really fit the current area
4Rec
More open spaces and sports clubs in skelmanthorpe so we can walk
3
The first school is very caring and supportive.
As a rural area we are given less funding overall due to perceived affluence. Weeks to get a GP appointment isn’t great. The middle and the college are struggling to manage the behaviour policies effectively and are allowed to decline NHS input which would provide consistent, evidence based interventions to young people rather than a bloke of tik tok singing and advising ‘just keep on going’ the bin collection is a nightmare.
5
Lots of small local businesses
There are very few opportunities for young people to work and remain in the village long term
4
Housing needs to be truly affordable, we have a good wage between us and couldn’t afford on the new estate if we wanted to. Not a lot of easy access housing
6
I think there are lots in neighbouring villages but not in skelmanthorpe
45
I love living in the village
I don’t know as I grew up in a town but I know others report increase in anti social behaviour
5
Dog poo bags and bins just more of

Dog poo, local groups, more opportunities for young people
Extra bins, utilising local spaces, that’s a tough issue to resolve
