Students are responsible for maintaining their own equipment and ensuring it is in safe working condition before each use. Equipment choice is a highly personal decision and the above reflects the minimum equipment recommended. Chivalry Today/San Diego Longsword, coaches, and staff, take every measure to ensure student safety, however, due to the nature of historical fencing as a contact sport with weapons, Chivalry Today does not and cannot guarantee the safety of it’s students and is not fiscally liable for any accidents regardless of fault or due to equipment failure. All students participate and/or use loaner equipment at their own personal risk.

Chivalry Today Armored Combat Equiptment Requirements/Guildlines
23
BEFORE PURCHASING ARMOR, PLEASE SPEAK WITH SCOTT OR LOREEN.
24
All equiptment must be inspected and preapproved by Scott Farrell. This is not an list of equiptment needed. This is a list of common requirements we need to address for purposes of safety and historical accuracy. The list is not exhaustive and is subject to change.
25
Consideration Description
26
MailleMaille is required. All maille must be welded or riveted steel. No butted maille.
27
VisorsVisors must protect the eyes of the wearer from the point of an unblunted sword (sword blunts are required to be blunted but blunts can, and often do fall off)
28
Historical AccuracyHistorical accuracy is not required to particpate in armored classes or free play as long as it meets safety standards. However, it is highly encouraged as you build your kit. If you wish to have the opportunity to participate in Chivalry Today Public Events (e.g. House of England), DeKoven and/or WMA events outside of Chivalry Today it is generally expected that harness will be as historically accurate as possible and range between 1350-1485. You should consult the rules and equiptment requirements for any deeds or tournaments outside of Chivalry Today in which you wish to participate.
29
Helmet/Helm(Also see visor). The chin or throat must be fully protected. They cannot be exposed between the gorget and bevor/aventail.
30
SwordsAll swords must be preapproved by Scott. All swords must be blunted (rebated without a blunt is not generally acceptable)
31
WeaponsAll weapons must be preapproved by Scott.
32
PlateAll plate armor must be harded spring steel, mild steel, or stainless steel. Harded spring or mild is required for historical events outside of classes (see historical accuracy). Stainless is not recommended for WMA events ore reenactment, however, depending on the event you may be able to participate, regardless. Chivalry Today will accept stainless so long as it appears to be spring or mild steel. Titatanum and aluminum are acceptable in class on a limited basis but are hightly discouraged for a mulititude of reasons.
