| Overview: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Strengths: | Notes: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Resetting Anchor | His quick feet and great balance allow him to reset multiple times if needed before a power rusher can get to the quarterback.
| Pass Blocking Edge Rushers | Long arms and quick lateral movements allow him to fend off speed rushers, whether they go inside or around the edge.
| Pass Blocking Balance | 6'8" offensive linemen typically do not have his balance. That is what really separates him from the other tall linemen coming out of college.
| ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Weaknesses: | Notes: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Fighting Against Leverage | If a true bull rusher gets under his pads, it is harder for him to adjust. This is mostly because he is 6'8.
| Gap Blocking | He can get out and move, but he does not reliably pick up his target in open space.
| Short Distances | Alt does not have the strength to push back multiple defensive linemen on short to go situations enough to assure success on every attempt.

| Game: | Takeaways: | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Ohio State (09/23/2023) | Very long player. Could keep core tighter when anchoring against power rushers. Missed run block entirely. Keeps allowing the pocket to get smaller without allowing the edge to finish the play. Balance could use some slight work. Beat around the edge with arm swipe by JT Tuimoloau. Key run game block, but overall run blocking could still improve. Multiple high-end reps in pass game. Another key run game block as well. Not the strongest, but doesn't really matter as much with size. Finishes blocks downfield. Not asked to kick out for outside zone runs thus far. Pushed into quarterback on stunt. Great angle on inside zone run with excellent footwork off the line to gain positioning. Consistency is not great play to play, but range is from decent reps to very high-end reps with almost no negative reps. Easily a top 10 player. | Top 10 tape.
| USC (10/14/2023) | Great sustain on run block. Very flexible hips for his size. Quick feet and excellent mirroring. Inconsistent run blocker. Maintains inside position to the pocket well to set himself up to manage both inside shoulder and edge rushes. Displaces ground quickly despite strides not always being as long. Great contact angles. Handles speed rushes really well. Better on slant blocks than seen previously. Not sustaining gap blocks. Low end run game rep. No pressures allowed, and really not remotely challenged in the passing game. | Early first round tape. Still a top 10 prospect.
| Duke (09/30/2023) | Great flexibility for size. Elite hip pivot on pass block. Active hands, good balance, and precise hand placement. Long arms with excellent grip. High level pass blocker. Good positioning on inside zone run blocking rep. Excellent grip and extension. Great balance on anchor reset. Good outside zone blocker. Inconsistent run blocker. Giving too much ground against sub-par speed-to-power rusher. Could afford to gain strength, which should occur naturally for the 21-year-old. Pass blocking grip is superb. Accurate pickup. Not climbing very well. Finishing run blocks, but not a mauler so to speak. Uses length tremendously well. QB hit is unconcerning - came from snap miscommunication. Franchise left tackle. | Top 5 player.

| Final Scouting Report:
| Joe Alt is the most complete offensive tackle in this draft class, and is easily worthy of a top five pick. His build is tailor-made for the position at 6'8 with long arms and great flexibility. He only allowed five pressures all season, and flashed high level pass blocking concepts that are often not attempted at the collegiate level. His understanding of the position is veteran despite not playing much along the offensive line until he got to Notre Dame. Being a monstrous human being, a highly intelligent athlete who learns quickly from his mistakes, and showcasing rapid improvement each and every game is exactly what teams want when using a top five pick on a non-quarterback. With high-end tape in both the run and pass game, Alt has made his way to the number one ranked offensive lineman in this star-studded draft class. While he does not have many deficiencies, he is noticeably worse running gap than he is zone. His footwork and positioning in zone stand out as strengths, but his gap technique certainly does not. He could be serviceable playing gap, but does not have the build or movement patterns observed by the better NFL gap run blockers. Despite having superb hip flexibility, he is constantly fighting against leverage. At 6'8, most pass rushers have an easier track to the underside of his shoulder pads. Alt handles this very well on most reps, but is forced to reset his anchor too far back in the pocket against many power rushers who should not have the raw strength or speed to power to push him back as far as they did. Most of Alt's supposed weaknesses stem from overanalyzing and nitpicking each and every rep of an otherwise superb prospect. Alt has the type of build, technique, and fundamentals at the position to be a franchise left tackle for the next 10-15 years.
