ManagerNGO11/25/25 8:49Requires a PhD in marine biology, zoology, oceanography, or a related discipline. 1) salary starting at £27k for someone with a PhD. 2) is that a joke??? comically low by US standards (less than many PhD students make) 3) The low salary does not even quality for a visa. 4) Former employee here. Avoid. Exploitative company and you wouldnt get any actual research done. You are mostly putting out fires. 5) Is this salary legit? Even at 0.5FTE this is a joke.

Assoc / Sr EditorIndustry7/20/25 8:57Location: New York, Philadelphia or Shanghai (Hybrid working model). 1) I recently interviewed for a very similar position with Genome Biology and turned position down. Salary is hard set at 80k. Interview process is tedious, they had me review multiple mansucripts with a time limit and on video 2) @1 thanks for your input. Do you think work load is ok compared to 80k? 1) yes, it did not seem like a huge lift to me. Position is required to be in-office 2-3 days a week even though the rest of the team may be located internationally 2) @1 This is great input. Thanks again. I think 80k is a def not strong incentive but it's still good to work home assuming your spouse working more full time.

DirectorNon-TS Academic9/13/25 10:23Santa Cruz Island Reserve (Channel Islands). 1) Ugh, I would love to apply for this but I have a school-aged kid and that seems incompatible with being resident at the Reserve. Does anyone know any different? 2) Teach your child the ways of the island - the only school they will need 3) did I spend the afternoon daydreaming about giving up my R1 research career goals to do this job? Yes. Sounds so amazing. 4) Does anyone know if the housing costs are covered with the position? Could the imcumbent bring a pet? 5) It says in the add that housing on the island is provided. Also that it's possible to spend part time on island part time on mainland but of course you'd need your own housing on mainland. 6) I'm guessing for biosecurity reasons, unlikely even houseplants could be brought out with you and def not pets. 7) rejection email cites a "record number of applications"2

https://careers.jcu.edu.au/jobs/lecturer-animal-ecology-townsville-qld-australia
LecturerTenure Stream10/10/25 0:51"Demonstrated research expertise in terrestrial animal ecology, with a focus on anthropogenic impacts on biodiversity." 1) Anyone have any insight about living in Townsville? 2) TSV is very isolated (~15 drive north of Brisbane, 5hrs south of Cairns), but has it's own charms (beaches, ~11 months of sunshine p/year, some culture, etc..). Very laid back lifestyle. This region has a reputation in Aus for being extremely backwater, so it's hard to recruit domestic PhD students. It's common that faculty go there because of the reputation of JCU, and then end up staying because they love TSV or Cairns...... not because they like JCU. 3) isn't this the same school that a bunch of infamous fraudsters came from? 2) Bunch? One PhD student, multiple papers. My understanding is that the accused faculty member probably wasn't committing fraud, but used an inappropriate method for several papers, which led to erroneous results. Both people were in the Marine Bio department, not the Zoology and Ecology dept which is advertizing here. 4) looks like there's two high profile cases of fraud from former JCU grads: https://ipa.org.au/ipa-today/time-for-jcu-to-accept-it-has-a-problem-with-research 5) What is the teaching/research expectation? It's listed as lecturer, but the description sounds like both are expected? 6) Lecturers in Australia are equivalent to Assistant Professors in the US. Commonly, lecturers have a balanced portfolio of 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. 2) It's hard to say exactly what the teaching load is, as it's based on a complex model worked out by the former dept. VC and the union, and the rules of the contract are routinely ignored. When I started, teaching load was 2-3 classes a year, normally during the same semester (leaving the other semester for fieldwork). Now, I think it's closer to 4 classes with trimesters. The research expectations are decently high. This is a productive department with lots of good researchers. 3) Rejection email Aug 25 4) rejection email Sept 29 5) has anyone received invite for interview? mine stuck at 'initial shortlisting'4

Sr. EcologistIndustry7/7/25 15:25Support NOAA Fisheries in evaluating the status of sea turtle populations. 1) You can advertise a job before you have the money to pay the employee? Should pay someone 2x for taking the risk that this money won't disappear even if they get it to begin with. 2) In my experience, this means that the agency (NOAA) has the money and this company is probably going to get the contract for this region/role but in theory the contract could go to another contracting company. 1) In my experience federal contracts are disappearing left and right, and NOAA's 2026 budget eliminates sea turtle research. We'll see what it ends up looking like. 3) this is just a guess, but I am on the ground here in WH and these look like contracting positions to replace federal employees that took the early retirement deal out of NOAA. Possible there are in-lab candidates and also uncertainty in funding, but that's true everywhere about now.

Sr. AnalystIndustry7/4/25 11:33Support NOAA Fisheries in collecting and analyzing data on protected species. 1) Different commenter than above, but I share the same concerns about the longevity of this position given the funding and the fact that they want the employee to be on-site in Woods Hole. What if one moves across the country and then funding gets cut? All of the described duties of this position could be performed fully remote, and they'd generate a much stronger applicant pool if they allowed such given the risks.

But they are typically soft-money, and do not automatically hold PI status to be able to apply for one's own grants, so whether this is long-term likely depends on the funding situation and what the PI is willing to support.

Visiting FacultyFixed Term Academic8/18/25 21:57Individuals from underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply ... for $50K per year. 1) Salary is pitiful, even compared to most post-docs, but note that only a MS is required 2) Are we really going to debate whether it's somehow bad for a position that only requires an MSc to pay less than a typical postdoc? 3) It lists PhD as preferred and I would be shocked if they interview anyone with only an MS. 4) I might be less shocked given the salary. Anecdotally, I'm hearing of more failed searches for low-budget position due to poor applicant pools this year. So, might be a great opportunity for a recent MS grad who knows they want to teach 5) I don't agree that $50K is a great opportunity for someone with a Master's degree. Are our expectations really that low? 6) I don't think academics truly understand how underpaid we are, despite that many of us think we do. My partner recently landed a tech job straight out of phd that pays not double not triple but quadrupedal their phd salary (a little more than that actually). Given that my skillset is not too dissimilar, it has entirely re-framed the kinds of positions I will even consider moving forward. 50k isn't worth clicking on the link if you have a phd, even given the location. 7) @6 seems to be projecting their own experience on all of academia....A lot of academics are well aware, and still prefer to earn less and work in academia. If you don't feel that way there is no point in playing the hypercompetitive academic job market while juggling 1-3 year postdoc gigs. Just find a job elsewhere like the majority og PhDs do... 8) I don't know any academics that prefer to earn less. Yes, some are willing to accept less because they prefer to work in academia. In general I agree with 6 though, PhDs should demand more. 9) $50K is a good opportunity for a person who recently earned their associates of arts in nursing. Wait, maybe not.

Senior Manager, Quantitative ScienceNGO6/20/25 11:06Location: Remote within US; (2) If you live in Oyster Bay, they hate you for some reason; 3) This job had opened back in February and I know people that had applied, wonder what happened. 4) I interviewed. They said they were moving forward with other candidates. But shortly after that, it was reposted, so maybe they are looking for more options. 3) Sorry to hear that @4, if you feel comfortable sharing what is your impression of what they are looking for? The list of tasks/abilities is long and I think in these types of postings it seems like its an attempt to cast a wide net but then they may be actually looking for specific skills. 4) Hard to say, but I think in my case, I was very competitive on quantitative skills, but less so on knowledge of bird ecology and conservation issues, passion for birds and bird conservation, and seeing these types of projects through the full research process from planning the study to data collection to publication. 5) I am not sure how to interpret the reposting of this job. It reposted a few days after I was contacted for a second round intervew (I think there will be 3 rounds). 6) Is it the exact same language as the earlier ad? Maybe it's another position with the same title? Seems like Audubon has had quite a few similar positions over the last few years. 4) Job number is the same, JR661 5) I applied 2 months ago even tho the ad had been up for 30+ days not sure if it was still open. I was asked to schedule a screener a couple of weeks later but then told it was a mistake they emailed me...7) every job on their careers website was reposted 2 days ago, maybe an automatic thing? 8) I recently was a finalist for a similar position, and my experience was that the recruiter handling these postings is pretty inept and the organization as a whole has a very disorganized approach to the search and interview process
