It's just outside the Eagles Nest Wilderness boundary. Recorded on COTREX. Mentor hike with Rick and Deana. The parking was looking nearly full when I arrived at 9am. There was 1 bus with a big group of 18 from Keystone. Some sort of children's education program. There was another large van there that likely belonged to a group we encountered. We passed a big group of 13 adults in a social hiking program. They stopped and talked to us about nearby plants and flowers. We came across another big group of 15 that was a youth group of some kind. They came from the Salt Lick Trail. They told us they saw an unaggressive moose that followed them around for a short time in that area. Only encountered one dog that was on leash. Saw one man fishing on the lake. Lily pads are beginning to bloom.

I bushwacked around the far side of the larger lake to check for campsites or trash. It looked good..7 miles from the Silverthorne trailhead, a new replacement bridge had been built. The builders left a large pile of new leftover bridge redwood lumber just off the trail. They’re large pieces of redwood lumber and would probably need a horse or mule to pack them out. They take away from the feeling of being in the midst of nature. I have a photo of it if someone would like to see it.There was a group of 8 people next to the water at the east end of the larger Lily Pad Lake. They had three (3) dogs off leash. The dogs were running in and out of the water and all over that terrain in that area. I walked around the far side of that lake to look for trash or campsites. As I moved along the edge of the lake in the direction of that group, two of the dogs came after me, barking aggressively. They were large dogs, larger than a German Shepard. The owners were able to call away one of the dogs, but the last one kept moving back and forth across my path, barking and almost growling, keeping me from moving forward. The owners tried to call the dog back. I was about 30’ from them. However, the dog did not respond to them. One owner finally came to the dog and pulled it away. I shared with the group that dogs had to be on leashes. They acknowledged that and did nothing. So, then I asked if they had leashes. They responded that they did and did nothing. So, then I said I’ll wait. After that, they finally went to their pack and pulled out leashes and leashed their dogs. After I got past them, a family group of nine with young children, not far from them, thanked me multiple times. I am guessing the dogs may have confronted them. That family group of nine then asked me to take a picture of the group for them, and they again thanked me profusely.

Lack of parking made some angry at ESWA! Lots want to take "Willow Creek trail" to waterfall. The connector trail is in bad condition, muddy and swampy and broken bridges, but it's being worked on. There's a large fire ring of stones up by the rocks above waterfall which should be dismantled. A lot of time spent directing cars down the hill to other parking spaces.

We noticed 1 car driving up the trail and one car parked on the trail. We also noticed several fires not in rings above the first group of mining cabins aprox. 1.6 miles from TH. We also encountered a group of 27 16-18 year olds from Houston hiking with BOEC (Breck outdoor education center). They were led by Emily. Great group!! One hiker recommended a trash can or place to discard dog poop bags at the TH. Overall great day!! We saw 156 hikers.

Still early conditions. I had also planned on hiking but every time I planned on packing up the table, more people came! One of the hikers had done the full loop and was in tennis shoes...per her there was a lot of snow up on the Fancy Pass and she had to slide down. A group of 5 day hikers arrived and their 2 dogs were loose and running around at the trailhead. One owner had a Vail Health backpack so was local. Owner was surprised about dog facts (stressing or hurting wildlife, etc.) but I wonder if they let the dogs off leash once out of my sight. Another visitor who was in the parking lot at the same time after his hike thanked me for talking to them and getting the out of control dogs on leash. There were also 3 Forest Service gentlemen installing Leave No Trace signs (these looked awesome). It would have been helpful to have a laminated Sopris-Brady hiking sheet (like the Missouri Lakes Fancy Pass ones, which were REALLY helpful and I used a lot, mainly for out of town visitors). Several people were not sure they could do either of these and I know Sopris-Brady is easier and shorter. I might also request a Beaver Lake-Turquoise Lake sheet as I plan on doing a hosting at that trailhead around the 4th (but I can pick up a paper copy from Forest Service too as I am training there this week). People really stay and talk! Very different from hiking, which are quicker interactions. I think one fellow was there 15 minutes. Almost had to push him along his way so I could talk to others. Also ran into a Blackhawk helicopter rescue acquaintance and his wife at the end. He said that this season has started out crazy with rescues in the early season...14 so far? Lots of young people 17, 19 on 14ers. A lot of out of towners who don't realize the dangers or think they can try a different way down? Dropped the hosting kit off on my way home. Really enjoyed this.
