Directions:
2
This spreadsheet lists and links to people who were recorded as Black on the 1880 census. There are separate spreadsheet tabs for each state.
3
Add your ID in column A for people you plan to work on. When you have created the profile (or identified an existing profile) for that person, put the new ID in column B.
4
Please create profiles for everyone in each household when possible. It would be preferable to find and add additional sources to each profile, not just the 1880 census. If you'd like to continue building out the family beyond members of the household in the 1880 census, that would be great!
5
Add the {{African-American Sticker}} to every profile where it is appropriate. It should be placed right below the Biography heading.
6
Make sure to add a birth location and an appropriate location category to each profile. The category for the residence location from the 1880 census could be used on all of these profiles, though additional sources may show that additional location categories are needed.
7
Please add appropriate maintenance categories, particularly those listed under the "Profile Creation Cycle" section on the project's maintenance category help page (that's Needs Sources, Needs Biography, and Needs Profiles Created).
8
9
When you have created profiles for all members of the family who are listed in that 1880 census household, put an X in Column C.

Note:The options on the 1880 census column for "Color" are just White, Black, Mulatto, Chinese, and Indian - nothing that really matches people who were Hispanic, among other ethnicities. So it seems that many Hispanic people in particular were recorded as "Black" in 1880. In general, please try to find at least one other source besides the 1880 census to help determine whether each family should get the African-American Sticker.

Once all profiles for a county have been created, please notify Emma MacBeath or Christy Melick.
